Just cause you dont like his voice or his type of fan doesnt mean he doesnt deserve credit.

They are overrated because they are a decent band that is absolutely worshipped like gods by some people. It's about the differential between how good they are and how good a lot of people THINK they are. DMB has these fans that are just insanely attached to DMB. It's like rocky horror picture show fans, except in this case the fans actually believe DMB is that good, and aren't in it just for the group experience and for loving something that is bad.

Hmm,keeping it to 3 is gonna be hard.

nirvana - too much credit for the 'grunge' thing. Alice in Chains, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam all came along before them. Its just that none of them had thier lead singer put a gun in his mouth. Had Layne Staley blown his head off instead of slowly killing himself with drugs, AiC would probly get more credit. Dont belive me, check your cd release dates. AiC(facelift 1990), Pearl Jam(ten 1991) and SOundgarden(badmotorfinger 1991, and they have stuff back to 88) all precede or are at the same time as nirvana(nevermind 1991).

coldplay/oasis/<other whiny british wanna-be beatles or u2(who are not very good themselves) group>

probly going to have to go with the rolling stones for the third slot.

comentary on other posts.....

the metallica stuff, well when they came out, they did change the landscape od hard rock metal, and deserve the credit due for it. Weatehr or not you like thier new stuff. they were extreemly influetial.

tool doesnt get the media attention, raidio play, awards or whatever so they dont get a high rating to begin with, they are my favorite band so there is some bias, but they dont get enough credit becuase they dont follow with making radio freindly albums.

and i get the impression the OP is an emo fan.

What about Nirvana's first album, Bleach? They formed in 1988 and released Bleach in 89. Even before Cobain killed himself, they were considered by the media to be the posterchildren for the grunge movement (not that they wanted to be).

Yeah... I don't see how people can say that Nirvana is popular beacuse of the suicide. I don't think that would explain why critics usually list their best album as one of or the best albums of the 90's. Anyway considering how much I dislike the last couple of pearl jam albums, maybe Nirvana was on to something. call it the Smiths effect... put out only good stuff and then call it quits

Typically changes from time to time. Right now, I would have to go with U2, and Greenday for sure. Can't think of a third offhand.

As far as Nickelback goes (mentioned here several times and IMHO deservedly so), wasn't there a guy who overlaid the tracks of one of their songs on top of another one and they were almost identical? I remember getting a good laugh out of that. It might even have been a thread here. Let me try searching...

EDIT: Spelling

EDIT2: This was the thread. But the link is dead.

cant say as i have ever heard anything off of 'bleach' and that probly goes for most people. Nevermind is the one they always, always get the bigest credit for. And while it is a good album, the idolization of them didnt start till curt blew his head off. What the suicide does is get alot more pub than they would ahve gotten otherwise, and keeps them more in the forfront of peoples' minds. The other seattle bands from the same time frame all get put as footnotes to nirvana, which is where the overrating comes from. As for being the 'posterchild' they get that because, contrary to thier own statements even, aimed for the spotlight. You dont go in drag on mtv if you want to be just about music. I never said they were not a good badn, ad nevermind is a really good cd, but they certainly are not worthy of idolization, while all other grunge bands get hanger-on status.

That was Linkin Park, "Pushing Me Away" and "Numb" were the two songs.

I'm sorry man, but that part about Nirvana is complete BS. Release dates had nothing to do with it. Teen Spirit and Nevermind took off like wildfire when it hit the radio as a lot of the disaffected youth had not heard anything like it at the time.

While Soundgarden/Mudhoney/MLB all had stuff out before them, it was Nirvana that burst into the mainstream and in the process brought a lot of other bands along with them. You can debate all day which band was the best amongst all of them, but there should be absolutely no doubt that they were the most influential to mainstream music.

U2- I never understood why they were so popular, to me they just plain suck.

Lynard Skynard- I used to like them in the 70's, hate them now. (overplayed) They have a few good songs, most are garbage. Freebird may be the most overrated song of all time.

311- My vote for the most annoying sound.... EVER.

3. INXS (fvck you very much Australia for inflicting them on the rest of us)
2. Lynard Skynard (queue the drunk inbred redneck shouting "Freebird!")
1. The Police (how anything on that POS album Synchronicity got put into such heavy rotation I'll never understand)

Dishonorable mention: Sarah Mclaughlin

BTW, it would probably be interesting if folks also listed who they felt were the top 3 under-rated bands ever along with their selections for overrated - my choices for those would be Peter Gabriel, the Violent Femmes, and Simply Red.

Stevie Ray Vaughn (ugh, i can't turn the station that is playing his stuff fast enough)
Dream Theater (Sounds like some one is having an epeliptic siezure during large parts of their stuff)
DMB (Never Got them)

You definitely deserve to be clubbed to death... or at least you should never be allowed to comment on music ever again.
