If 1 more person votes Bob Dylan I'm gonna...I'm gonna...cry!!! :| He's a legend for a reason, even if he had never made 1 Rock album his name would still be legendary(probably even more so since his switch from Folk was met with outward hostility).

The Beatles are not overrated. I agree with the above posters pointing out that what makes them good is not simply their radio singles but the depth of their music on most of their albums. On either CD or vinyl or both I have (off the top of my head):

White Album
Abbey Road
Let It Be
Rubber Soul
Help!
Revolver
Magical Mystery Tour
Sgt. Pepper's
Beatles 1967-1970

There is some great stuff hidden away on many of their albums that you will never hear on the radio. Also, Abbey Road in its totality is amazing (with just a couple exceptions).

The fact is that any of the beatles-whether it be George, Ringo, John, or Paul- could have easily had a successful solo career. They are all individually talented and together they are worthy of their reputation.

Further, Radiohead is not overrated. How many other bands have maintained the staying power and appeal of a band around for this long that has also innovated with each new release and essentially steered their musical genre?

Also, while U2's latest release Vertigo may have been overhyped and perhaps overrated, U2 as a band is certainly not overrated. They have had some amazing tracks over the years and simply because your 13 year old mind can only remember the most recent album of any given artist at one time does not take away from their vast musical contribution.

When I above posted that the three most overrated bands in my opinion were Creed, Nickelback, and Limp Bizkit, I did so because I fail to see their musical contribution or staying power despite their past or present mass popularity.

The fact is that virtually every single Nickelback song sounds the same and I don't even feel that I need to justify my choices of Creed or Limp Bizkit.

Cliffs:

1) The Beatles are amazing, not overrated
2) Radiohead has been a consistent innovator and joy to listen to... also not overrated
3) U2's status should not be deemed 'overrated' due to one less than stellar recent release
4) Nickelback, Creed, and Limp Bizkit are still overrated

Very good post. I only disagree with you a bit on U2 in that present U2 is mostly crap whereas old U2 (Joshua Tree era and earlier) is outstanding.

You guys are funny. Calling U2, Van Halen, The Beatles, Stones, Doors, Bob Dylan, and others overrated. Shows what you know about music. They may not be producing stuff you like but that doesn't mean they're overrated. I can't stand Nirvana but without them you wouldn't have The Foo Fighters, Soundgarden, Velvet Revolver. Eddie Van Halen was the father of all hair band guitarists. I bet Tom Morello would even credit Eddie as one of his influences. But I guess you'd say Buddie Rich or Brian Setzer are overrated too.

FYI Soundgarden was assembled in 1984 and Nirvana was in 1987. Nirvana just made grunge mainstream. It existed long before Nirvana.

But Soundgarden's success was largely due to Nirvana. Kindof like Run DMC resurecting Aerosmith

Actually, I think there success was largely due to them being excellent musicians. There were a whole group of bands in Seattle at the time that were very talented. Nirvana just made it on the radion first.

Soundgarden is a great band and superunknown is one of my favorite albums, but it didn't really have a breakthrough song that would make everyone go 'holy sh!t, that's amazing', and shift everyone's attention away from metal.

Smells Like Teen Spirit may not sound that spectacular now, but back in 1992 it absolutely blew me away.

Rofl @ oasis overrated.
Never have been, never will be. You have the lowest album selling @ 3.0 certified RIAA and your best album at 18x(Not many bands do that... wow) Probably 30x by the end of the decade, then we'll talk

Oasis has NEVER been overrated, their music is praised and criticized on a MUCH higher level. If you realize that Heathen Chemistry and Standing on theShoulders of the Giants, both good albums(NOT GREAT)< they were rated BELOW PAR and even bashed.

No one in America knows who Oasis is and never willb ecause of your EXACT idiocy "BLoated egos". You grow up poor with no dad and we'll talk about who's overrated champ. Then make 2 albums, the 2ndof which you achieve peaks not many bands will in their career.

Oasis is still managing to sell out tours in AMerica (MSG Earlier this year, anyone?), so stfu, because I take it personal. I admire them from where they came for and their ability tomake their OWN Music and do covers that are usually even better than the original song, b-sides that are a-sides for your favorite band, My chemical romance, NOOB

Pink Floyd?!?!?! You can't be serious.... Roger Waters is one of the greatest song writers of all time.

Greatful Dead.... I'll give you that, only because I can't stand them. But there are many that worship them.... go figure.

My list:

1) REM
2) Live
3) Snoop Dog (every album after Doggystyle blew)
4) 50 Cent (pop trash) & anything related

How did I forget REM? I'll put them in a tie for 3rd with 311...

Thank you so fvcking much.

fixed... He's got the least talent. His band, and mostly everyone he tours with are real musicians.

He is a very good guitar player.

His singing is up to if you like his voice or not

you either hate it or love it.

1-Green Day. Catchy songs, sure...but they way overhyped and overrated. Media Darlings. They liked the album when they heard the title, way before they heard the songs.
2-Black Eyed Peas-Make them stop!!! They are horrible. The dude(s) mumble, and the chick is a whiny beotch. She also looks beat. I know looks don't have to do with their artistic talent, but their promotion group shots are painted with the ugly brush dipped in gnarly paint.
3-Red Hot Chili Peppers (flamesuit on), I like most of them on their own, they have plenty of talent...no question there. I just don't understand why some of their songs are played over and over again.

DMB-Not too fond of them either. But their drummer is something else. Would like to see more him on his own.
slightly OT-Does anybody know the comedian that makes impressions of DMB and Hootie and the Blowfish. Friggin funny. He also makes fun of eddie vedder and others I think.

The first one that came to mind, well after seeing someone else mention it, is The Rolling Stones. The only song I'm familiar with, that was sorta catchy, was "Satisfaction" if that's what it's called. And besides that, I don't see the big draw.

I am 42, play guitar and sing in a coverband. I do a bit of synth and bass on the side. I have discussions like this in my band where I am the oldest guy. There's a lot of stuff that they didn't pick up when bands like Led Zeppelin and The Who were making waves. Plus they are more Top 40 oriented than me. There's a lot going on besides the Top 40 from which commercially succesful bands get their inspiration/rip-offs.

My 3, in no particular order.
  • Michael Jackson
Robbie Williams (suprised I didn't see that one yet)
Just about any DJ except maybe JXL.

I read U2 once admitted they didn't dare to play as a coverband, back in the day, because they didn't have the musical skills it would take. That's why they decided to play their own music. I like playing Vertigo with my band because there's so much energy in that song.

Edit

I would have liked to add Sting. He can join Bono is in his sacred quest for world peace until his balls fall off, for all I care. He takes himself way too seriously.

While I understand that you favour Oasis highly above Queen, that doesn't make Queen overrated, still. I am not a big Queen fan too, but I can't deny their talent and musicianship.

How can you downplay Brian May's playing like that? Anyway, I believe Freddy was an amazing singer/performer and songwriter. Your Oasis frontman doesn't even come close. But that's just my taste.

Besides, We Are The Champions has become a soccer anthem way, way after release. Bohemian Rhapsody is one of the epic songs up there with Child In Time and Paradise By The Dashboard Light.

Some people really need to learn some music appreciation; or at least, music history. Some of the nominations in this thread are hilarious.
