The Beatles are not overrated. I agree with the above posters pointing out that what makes them good is not simply their radio singles but the depth of their music on most of their albums. On either CD or vinyl or both I have (off the top of my head):
White Album
Abbey Road
Let It Be
Rubber Soul
Help!
Revolver
Magical Mystery Tour
Sgt. Pepper's
Beatles 1967-1970
There is some great stuff hidden away on many of their albums that you will never hear on the radio. Also, Abbey Road in its totality is amazing (with just a couple exceptions).
The fact is that any of the beatles-whether it be George, Ringo, John, or Paul- could have easily had a successful solo career. They are all individually talented and together they are worthy of their reputation.
Further, Radiohead is not overrated. How many other bands have maintained the staying power and appeal of a band around for this long that has also innovated with each new release and essentially steered their musical genre?
Also, while U2's latest release Vertigo may have been overhyped and perhaps overrated, U2 as a band is certainly not overrated. They have had some amazing tracks over the years and simply because your 13 year old mind can only remember the most recent album of any given artist at one time does not take away from their vast musical contribution.
When I above posted that the three most overrated bands in my opinion were Creed, Nickelback, and Limp Bizkit, I did so because I fail to see their musical contribution or staying power despite their past or present mass popularity.
The fact is that virtually every single Nickelback song sounds the same and I don't even feel that I need to justify my choices of Creed or Limp Bizkit.
Cliffs:
1) The Beatles are amazing, not overrated
2) Radiohead has been a consistent innovator and joy to listen to... also not overrated
3) U2's status should not be deemed 'overrated' due to one less than stellar recent release
4) Nickelback, Creed, and Limp Bizkit are still overrated
