2. GNR.....3 halfway decent songs does not a great band make, unless they were like GNR, and came out in the late 80's. Let's face it, they looked like a bunch of escapees from a masquerade party at an insane asylum. Definitely a one-hit wonder type band, to the 3rd power.

3. just about any "band" that does hip-hop or rap....let's face it, they're not making music, for the most part. They're rhyming, oftentimes badly, speaking instead of singing (thought there's a lot of bands that came out in the 90's that can be accused of having a lead singer that couldn't sing!! ), and scratching records. Wow......and you make a million putting out that drivel?? Just shows you that the record industry can truly cram anything down the throats of mindless sheeple!!

Honorable mention - anyone who gets caught lip-syncing!! :|

Guns n' Roses?

Say what?

I can think of, OTOH, about 15 songs by them that were outstanding. 25 or more if I had the time.

Just because you don't like someone or are jealous of their success, donesn't mean you have to do ****** like that....

And for the people who think DMB is overrated, are you guys freakin nuts? Every musician in that band is incredibly talented. Dave = great guitarist; Carter = one of the best drummers on Earth both technically and musically; Leroi and Boyd? How many other bands have a saxophonist and a violinist that do solo's and tear it up like they do? Moreover, I don't think there is a band around that mixes completely different genres and styles of music together like they do (anyone else know a band that had an entire album that was a mixture of Indie, Indian, African, and Rock?). You may not like them, but their music is fun and incredibly complex. Just my 2c

This is why we say they're overrated.. because of people like you who worship them.
WHat do you expect, he also worships John Mayer, a trait you usually find in DMB fanbois and frat bro's

I don't worship either DMB or John Mayer. I just recognize that they are insanely talented. For the record, I was never in a social fraternity (I was in a couple different proffesional societies in undergrad) and I saw Dave Matthews when he was basically nothing except a guy who used to play coffee shops in downtown Charlottesville with no backup...and even back then it was plain that he was extremely talented. Am I saying DMB is "Wyld Stallions!" or the best band on Earth? No. But is DMB comprised of a collection of some amazing musicians who produce truely unique music? Absolutely.

Did you go to UVA? If so, that explains a lot.

edit: also 'vitalogy' was the last good hurrah for pearl jam.

No, Vitalogy was an insult to Pearl Jam fans everywhere. Vitalogy was the end of their career as actual artists who gave a crap about what kind of music they put out IMO.

Over-Rated: Barbara Streisand. Puff Daddy.
Nirvana=yes(kinda?) I think people are obsessed with "What they might have done next" than the actual records they put out. Unplugged in New York was awesome: that's when people really, really thought the next legends had arrived. Everything before that was just 'Flavor of the Week: buy this now' hype.

Over-rated means: Won truckload of AMAs, Grammys, CMAs or whatever....music critics are ready to suck the bands dicks....even their crappiest records get 5-star reviews all over. Last time I checked, Oasis got really, really bad reviews for 'Be Here Now' & 'Standing on the Shoulder of Giants' from ALL OVER. Heathen Chemistry and Don't Believe the Truth are hardly being heralded as Rock Classics. So, by what logic is Oasis over-rated? (Unless you think Definitely Maybe and Morning Glory are bad records - if you do, then they are bands YOU don't like, not OVER-RATED.)

Pearl Jam is also NOT over-rated. Their albums are no longer the All-Killer records they used to be: but they are also selling like a quarter of the records they used to sell. They LOST fans. Haven't won any major music awards in recent history.... So again, really, over-rated?!? Lost Dogs was a bad collection...Binaural was boring. The rest has all been pretty damn good, if not great.

BTW, my favorite musical artists are Pearl Jam, Oasis, Guns N' Roses, Alanis Morissette, Bob Dylan, Elvis, Kid Rock, Pink Floyd and Sigur Ros. And not ONE of those artists can be classified as over-rated. But then again, I'm pretty obsessive about these artists....

Be Here Now is some of their finest work to date. It was not badly reviewed until a year later when people couldn't handle good rock.

Name me one song that is 10 minutes and doesn't get tireless like All Around the World? I know none, and I love that song with all of my heart.

Noel Gallagher motivated me so much. And to say that those 2 cd's in particular do not have their high poitns is a lie, and you are a mainstream rock listener.

I suggest if you're gonig to harass standing listen to these;
GO let it out
Who feels love?
Where did it all go wrong
Roll it over

Those are 4 top 4 UK hits right there. Oasis is insanely gifted with Noel's unreal writing and producing.

Oh and, You should really read up on Don't believe the truth it's doing amazing.
2 Back to back 1 hits(I hated lyla, Love the Importance of being Idle). They are at their peak.

Next album will be hellraiser, they are going to continue to sell out either way.

Oasis is talented end of story.

Dylan in his prime was easily one of the top 10 greatest songwriters of the last century.

Amen.

Cry and vomit at the same time...

oh and don't be ripping on grunge... just cause you don't like it... i have grown up listening to grunge from 14 up (22 now) and it never loses its relevance. at least most of it is sincere music not your typical commercial radio garbage pop crap.

I've never understood the term "over-rated". Are you saying that people like something more than it's worth? If so, who determines that someone is liking something too much? Who gives that person the authority to make that determination?

Nothing is over-rated. People that say something is over-rated are actually saying "I don't like something as much as other people, so other people are wrong becuase they don't share my minority view."

Band that i can't understand have been mentioned:

Pearl jam - they made Ten..come on people. if i'm going to a deserted island i'm taking that with me

Coldplay - probably my overall favorite band. great music, great sound, and great live show.

Beatles - does this even need an explaination. i'm not even a big fan, but name another band with as much impact.

gagan, calm down son, try not to take things so personal. don't need a essay every time. but for the record, i don't think they're overrated. i love oasis.

basically i agree that this thread comes down to people posting about bands they hate. most i think stems from most people not having an f-ing clue what a bands actual impact is before they post them up on this thread.

How do I cut it the list down to three?

If i had to..

The Stones...retire already!

Grateful dead...Never got what was so great about them in the first place.

U2..Pomposity to the max.

Bands/performers Right up there on the overrated list:

Bob Dylan..I thought he was someone doing a comedy bit the first time I saw him on TV when he first got big.

Sting/The police...Sting "sings" like he has been kicked in the throat.

Rod Stewart..Another raspy voiced guy who keeps working for some reason.

Linda Romstadt. Does she EVER do any new material? She keeps doing cover after cover, for about 30 years+ now.

Don McLean..bye bye! Gawd I hate that song, and him even more!

I think all 3 bands are popular more because of the attitude of their members than their music.

Are you kidding? Jim Morrison was one of the most talented men on the universe. He just so happened to waste away his poetic talent with drugs and alcohol. God did he have a brilliant brain. He could write. All of his songs were poetry at its best.

I pretty much go by the rolling stones 500 albums list.

It was such a huge album because it was like nothing you had ever heard before. It was also used for those on acid. It also so happens to sync with the wizard of oz. But seriously, it is completely out of the norm which is why it is brilliant.
