Two principles:

• More MHz is good as long as you don't lose the efficient synchronous link between the CPU and the RAM (meaning, don't go so high that you have to settle for a non-1:1 ratio). So a higher multiplier is good because (duh!) it results in more MHz.
• The higher the FSB and memory bus go, the beefier the MHz become. For example, an AthlonXP 2400+ at its stock 133MHz x 15 combo is about 15% slower than if it's at 200MHz x 10, even though they both come out to 2000MHz, because of the fatter pipe to the RAM at 200MHz x 10.

So there is a certain speed that your CPU tops out at, and there is a certain speed that your memory tops out at. Try to get as close to both peaks as practical, using the multiplier to balance things.

Bigger picture: people spend a lot of time trying for small performance gains when they could be playing Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries instead. Don't lose sight of the reason you've got a computer...

I've got the same MOBO as yours and have 2x256 in slot 1 and 2, and a 512 in slot three and it works in DC just fine. The memory is Mushkin cas 2, level 2 black (the ones they don't make anymore?).
