I've got one thing to say: Screw you, Time Warner, for not getting over your stupid vendetta against Sony and Phillips and not supporting the technologically superior Blu-Ray.

edit: Typo, I meant time "Warner", not "Warning".

i wonder if someone will make some underground hacked player that can play both formats.
sounds ridiculous but i'm sure people would buy it.

All DVDs are 480i. You need a deinterlacer to convert them to 480p

Is this the same thing at all as Microsoft's WMV-HD DVD standard?

Since Microsoft tends to get their way with what technology is adopted....

Are they gonna price them higher than regular dvds? I'm not paying more than 20-25 bucks for that stuff, especially since the cost to press em is just about the same.

How much are blue ray dvd players anyway? Any chance of getting it to work with xbox?

On second tought, I am less excited than I was 2 minutes ago. Mostly because I remember the original dvd vs divx (old school divx, not the new cool video codec) thing. Somehow I expect blue-ray or HD DVD to be the next divx / betamax.

DIVX was doomed from the start.

I am hoping blu-ray wins out but just to see HD-DVD of some sort coming to market is good news. Competition breeds a better solution.

Does that mean that progressive scan DVD players have a deinterlacer built in?

Yes. That's what "progressive scan" means.

You can get a Blu-ray player now in Japan for around $3000. I read somewhere that HD DVD players will be around $1000 when they hit the market. This mirrors the old
VHS vs Betamax war, and we know how that turned out.

Blu-ray players should be down below $500 by 2006 sometime since PS3 are rumored to have the technology.

The Sony Blu-ray player has been on the market since late 2003. Pansonic and Sharp (I think it was Sharp) units hit the market around mid 2004. These models support writing to BD-ROM/DVD/CD discs.

As of this very moment there are exactly zero HD DVD units on the market and that supposed $1000 Toshiba won't be out until the end of 2005 and will not have any burning capabilities.

It irks me that people are choosing HD DVD based on price alone. The price of read only players will be extremely similar. Besides the optical pickup, the rest of the hardware for both HD DVD and Blu-ray players will be virtually identical.

Besides, the price of the hardware will become a commodity and come down to <$200 within a few years for either format. Meanwhile, the storage limitation will not change, so why pick the lesser of the two technologies? Because you might (and odds are the price won't be that different) save a few bucks today?

Didn't Steve Jobs ask studios not to release movies on HD-DVD or BluRay until they received assurances that HD-DVD and BluRay burners would not be made and sold to the public?

I'm expecting the whole thing to turn out like SACD and DVD-A. I don't know why they couldn't come up with one format.

This is a little bit different, though. These are 2 different mediums for showing the same content. Someone will figure out a way to make a player that will do both.

This may be the first technology purchase my wife will spearhead simply because she is a huge Harry Potter fan. I will make sure to encourage her along the way.

I'm inclined to think it won't bomb that badly, the problem with hi-res audio wasn't really competing formats, it was that most people have ears made of stone, and with most of the sh!t that's being churned out now there's nothing to get excited about anyway. By far the majority of people are satisfied with easily pirated MP3. Most legitimate music consumers have also been taken through at least 3 or 4 format changes in their lifetime, the response to that is enough already.

I have a little more confidence in the average consumer's ability to appreciate visual quality than audio. Besides, lots of dudes will need to validate their recent HDTV purchases by growing a large library of HD movies they will watch an average of 1.163 times a piece.
