I am studying the MCSE course for Win 2k and I just purchased this machine from Newegg. I had a $700 budget so tell me how I did please. I wondered if I should have gotten Win XP Professional instead of Win 2k. Thanks for your advice. I know I need more memory but I'll have to do that when the price goes down.

IMHO I think you should stay with win2K. If you are studying the MCSE course, why would you be concerned with getting a pretty GUI when you can have the tried and true basic Win2K GUI and stable functionality with SP2. Unless there is some function of WINXP that you absolutely NEED, then stay with Win2K.

No, but I would call and get 256 megs of RAM. 128 megs is going to cripple a system like that - and if you really want bang for your buck, I think the Athlon 1700+ is overkill. I highly doubt you'd be able to tell the difference between the two in that system, so I'd save yourself thirty bucks and go for a XP 1500+.

As to XP vs. W2k, either one is a very good, stable operating system with good compatibility. Although with only 256 megs of ram (and if you're only going to get 128) you should definetly go with w2k.

Cheers,

128MB is not enough...too bad the ram prices are steep currently. Get 256MB or more...

Why should he go with a XP1500 ? I think a 1700 or 1800 gives a very good value for the money

I went with the retail XP1700 for the warranty. I could only save $12.00 with a XP1500 retail at newegg and I shop at Newegg because of their solid rep. Thanks for your comments, I will stay with WIN 2k and order more ram from Crucial.

KB-2000 107-KEY WIN98 PS/2 RTL 1 $3.50
MOUSE|DESIGNER SCROLL PSII RTL 1 $.69

You got a mouse and keyboard for under $5?
Go cheaper on the case+psu and spend more on things you actually use.

You're kidding right? I need more than 300 Watts for an XP and I made sure I got an AMD recommended power supply. I believe just the opposite as you. Spend more on critical components. Who gives a rats ass about a mouse and keyboard.

I agree. The power supply is probably one of the most critical components of your system. Bad mojo will cripple your system. I think sticking with win2k will be more beneficial for you as well.

Man that's a good deal for your comp. Sometimes I wish I lived in the U.S. so I could get deals like that. Again I say why doesn't newegg ship to Canada. Damn them.

I think I would have gone with a different HSF (non-retail) and just took the plunge with WinXP.

Otherwise I think you did pretty damn good.

NewEgg does have a good rep, but when buying a pile of stuff, Multiwave is just as solid and their shipping is MUCH more reasonable.

I can't speak for the keyboard but I bought that same mouse for a few clients and it is just like the older style logitech mice. Very good mouse. Plus at under a buck, man that's better than 10-10-220!

I've used both Win2k and WinXP. I've found WinXP to offer significantly better compatibility. It offers almost full compatibility, unlike Win2k. It's more than just a gui and bloatware. Check NTCompatible to see if your progs will work on Win2k.

THe Athlon 1700+ is the best value. I'd keep it. 1500+ is barely cheaper.

Yes, more ram would be so much better. I have a rather clean system tray and two MSIE browsers open atm; using 170mb ram. More = better

a comfortable mouse and keyboard is very important. it sucks to use crap for hours at a time, believe me (and painful, too). i would definitely spend a little more on the mouse and keyboad.

<< Had not heard of Multiwave, I think I'll check them out. I have an Alpha Pal 8045 HSF. >>

Multiwave rocks. The prices & service are on-par with Newegg and the shipping will save you a few $$.

I've RMAed things before with zero problems. I think that's pretty important.

why do you have to order it ALL from newegg? get a case for 44 dollars shipped from pcifinity.net it is awesome, looks pretty cool, and ive ordered 4 of them, never had a problem. you NEED at least 256mb of ram to run 2k or xp with any kind of good performance, and spend less on the CPU and MB, get a ECS K7S5A motherboard for 70.88 shipped (plus insurance of $1.88 from phertz.com, and you can get a hard drive 40gb ata 100 5400rpm (which is fine b/c this doesnt seem like a gaming system) for $69.00, $75.00 shipped. i dunno if this helps....

When I was comparing prices from Newegg and Mwave, Newegg usually came to be a bit cheaper.. overall from what I bought, Mwave was about $23 more expensive..

My experience, like yours is anecdotal. The last 4 systems I've built, it has gone Mwave's way. 1 overpriced/underpriced item can make all the difference. They are both good vendors.

300W power supply will do just fine. I was running a 300W Antec PS with the same rig you see in my signature WITHOUT ANY problems.

If you are studying for your MCSE, then why would you want winxp? They do have a Winxp elective, but all of the server tests are based on win2k server. You'll probably want to stay with win2k if you are going to take these as winxp has a really F*cked up way of letting you manage stuff. Try adding a user to a group and you'll see what I mean. Also is this a machine jsut to learn win2k on? Do you already ahve another good machine? If you do, you could probably build this for less and have money over towards a second one that you can purchase later. I built 3 systems for something like $1100 bucks a year ago when I needed a test lab. You don't need the fastest thing out there for a test comp.

Looks like you did real good. That's a nice system for what you paid. About the only thing I agree with above would be to throw another 128MB of RAM in there so you have at least 256. Other than that it looks fine.

That is so-o-o-o true. Get the ergonomic KB for $13. Your wrists and even back will thank you.

I'm running my XP1600 with the stock fan w/o high heat (about 40deg +-1deg). Non-overclocked.
