30" monitors--non-usable resolutions?

I was thinking of getting one of those 30" monitors, probably the Samsung for $1,300.

On another thread someone said the 30", if you don't run them at their max 2,550 x 1600 resolution, drop all the way down to a much, much lower resolution (i.e., not 1920x or 1600x but much lower).

Is this true? I'm worried that since alot of games don't handle 2,550x1600 they would drop to a very lower resolution.

Thanks.

Huh?

Not sure what is meant by that, as it's just not true.

Only real requirement is that you need a video card capable of dual link DVI (any good card these days has that).

BTW, i wouldn't recommend the Samsung 30" AT ALL.

There's only one thing is has going for itself, & that's the fact it comes very well calibrated by default.
Otherwise, you'd be much better off with the Dell 3007WFP-HC or HP LP3065

If you want one defining reason to not get the Samsung, it's the lack of HDCP.
I have no idea what they were smoking at Samsung, but that's a monstrous oversight for such a pricey display.

If you have more 30" questions, post away or PM myself or lopri (he has the HP 30"; i have the older Dell 30").

30" monitors support two resolutions natively, 2560x1600 via dual link DVI (which means you need a dual link DVI capable card) and 1280x800 (via DVI or dual link DVI). Any other resolution is going to either have to be scaled (either by the video card or the monitor if the monitor in question supports scaling) or letterboxed with black borders on all 4 sides.

Every game I've tried supports 2560x1600 (some require ini file hacks to add the resolution), how well they run is another matter. With an 8800GTX I can run all my games at 2560x1600, but the eye candy has to be turned down some (what if anything you turn down varies from game to game).

Thanks fellas. Its kind of a moot point now since I ordered a much cheaper 28" Hansol from newegg for about half the price. Not nearly a quality a monitor, but much cheaper and hopefully no frame rate problems (speed or dropping frames) given it is a TF (or TN, I forget) screen with a low ms refresh.

Thanks again.

Thats it kmmatney. Its a cheap TN (I think that's it) tube, so the quality won't be nearly as nice as that of the Samsung. But it appears to have a very fast ms speed and hopefully won't have any speed problems for games.

maybe I'm missing it on the site. What the rez of that 28" screen? I've been eyeing the Dell 24", but always wondered if I should go a tad bigger. But people don't seem to like the resolutions of the Dell 27" screens.

Go to the "specifications" tab. The recommended resolution is 1920x1200. Not sure if it can go higher, but I figure that's the max my video card can handle anyways
