30 bucks for a 20gb pata 5400rpm hard drive?

I nominate this for worst deal ever.

Sometimes, all you need is a HD to replace a dead one...In many applications, size hardly matters...But having a new drive to hopefully decrease the chances of it failing does matter.

I would imagine 5400rpm only increases its life.

We used this very drive to replace a dead 1.2gb WD Caviar, and, I am sorry to say, paid more than $30 for it. It has been working well.

Good deal, OP... In select circumstances.

Really? It's been a while since I've seen a 5400rpm drive, but the last one I had (a Maxtor) was easily the LOUDEST drive I've ever owned. It should run cooler at least!

Don't know whether to catagorize as Hot or Cold, but definitely an interesting deal.

Yes, very functional deal. Great for when grandmas HD crashes. Think how wasteful it would be to put in an 80 let alone 200GB. Thanks

Apparently i was wrong... I just can't imagine what you would do with 20 gigs... especially a slow 20 gigs for 1.50 a gig. Even my mom uses about 40gb

Yeah, but with only 20GB to work with, you aren't going to be able to record much content.

I'll nominate this as hot, for the simple reason that I know at least 10 people running on this size of a drive very happily. No, I wouldn't use it as a main drive for myself. However, most parents/grandparents/children don't know any better. Not to mention that these are reliable & it's always nice to be able to just pick up a drive without having to get a MIR or some sort of fancy PM scheme when you're just trying to replace your mother's old 12 gig drive.

So my friends Emachines died. The hard drive just went kaput. In 2 years they have used 6 gigs of hard drive spade. This is PERFECT for all those systems that need a new hard drives for the kids or just any internet, email, machine.

2 months ago I had to fix a system with a 120 gig Seagate Hard Drive. All I had on hand. If it works for the next 10 years the person using it will not have used 8 gigs.

Could also be a cheap and hassle free solution to go with an external enclosure for backup important files. You're definately not going to be backing up music collections or anything, but the really important files such as taxes/emails/documents/pictures/(a few select/rare media files)...granted if you can put up with rebates you could snag a much larger drive for roughly the same price.

Although I think the biggest attraction would be for ultra cheap systems where size really doesn't matter enough to justify the hassle of getting a larger drive for a similar price (let alone simply paying much more for a larger one)

It doesn't seem like that long ago that I put up with a rebate to get a 20GB 5400RPM drive for my parents for an amazing $50. However its been more than enough for them all this time and they still have yet to use more than half of it.

Lots of thread crapping here. If you have no use for this product, why not move on?

This is ideal for a cheap no rebate (I know there's rebate haters out there) replacement for Grandma's computer when her hdd goes.
Or just a cheap external drive.

Yes you can get much better deals per gig, but they are usually more total and often involve rebates.

It may or may not be good for HTPC, usually you need a larger hdd for recording stuff, and you'd want to check out reviews to see if this is quiet or not.

I personally won't get this, but there ARE some people who do need this. Its like integrated graphics, lots of people diss them, but for a few limited uses they are fine.
If you dont need this, feel free to move on.

in my opinon
a bad deal due to the price per a gig

80GB drives from etailers have the worse Price Per a Gig...

trolling too much?

Yeah, but with only 20GB to work with, you aren't going to be able to record much content.

20gig is perfect for the operating system, I also have a 300gig for storage. Only concern is the noise level of this 20gig drive, otherwise it's a perfect fit for ANY HTPC builder who stress silence. However I'd always had success with Seagate's 5400rpm drives, so I'll give it a go. Plus $30 is nothing for me.

I wouldn't get this for a gaming rig though.

I know lots of people that would never use this much storage. Ideal for the web/email machine.

$34.99 shipped

Nice little hard drive, it does have a 2MB buffer. The 5400's definately last longer IMO. I wouldn't classify this as hot, but it's a decent deal for a basic hard drive.

This would be PERFECT for a low-power linux box. An AMD 800mhz Duron/motherboard combo can be had for 40$ these days; throw in 256mb of SDRAM (25$) and an old PSU, case, and CD-ROM drive (Free for me-I get mine curbside!) and you've got a decent little system for under 100$ with no rebates. Sure, it's not lightning-fast, but it will run as a fileserver, kid's PC, or whatever.
I say: Hot!
