I love people who come on here and start throwing "homophobe! That's how they dressed!" around.

One last time: Spartans wore nearly full plate armor made of bronze. No little diapers.

As for wandering around back home in sparta, I don't know, but the battle outfit was woefully off.

In addition, for every Spartan Peer there would have been at least two squire/helots with him. They kept his kit, helped him arm, carried his ******, dress his wounds, and, during a battle, support the line. This could mean either fighting alongside the Spartans (though not as part of the phalanx), but there primary function was to supply fresh spears to the Spartans when they broke theirs.

The movie had some fun fight scenes, but don't expect to see the story of thermopylae.

i was skeptical also...after seeing it, i enjoyed it very much. There were some parts of the movie that resembled Gladiator imo.

It's a good film... just good, not great. Watch it for the visuals and fighting scenes alone and you'll get your moneys worth.

It's no Braveheart or Gladiator... but still a damn fine movie for its time.

his post, and Conky's post below yours, show that they are uncomfortable watching a movie that realistically depicts the clothing, or lack there of, that they wore to battle.
Spartan's were extremely proud of their bodies, and dressed in that way.

Are you serious?

Spartans did not wear that kind of clothing.

could be considered close to what they actually wore. Not necessarily tight black leather underwear, but just as skimpy: pic
looks as if they might have worn very little to battle, at least according to that statue. since very little was recorded in Sparta, its really hard to say any one thing for sure unless they actually wrote about it.

I believe that is body armor on the statues torso, molded to look like ripped abs. The only skimpy part is the little spartan skirt.

Hey, it could be worse...

possibly nsfw, but just art.

1. The movie was based on a comic book. Take a look at the comic book and look at how the guys were dressed.

2. It's not supposed to be based on facts. Again, it's based on a comic book.

FOR THE CLUELESS PEOPLE - THIS MOVIE IS NOT A DOCUMENTARY AND IS NOT BASED ON FACTS. IT IS BASED ON A FVCKING COMIC BOOK.

I liked it; it was definately fun to watch. Don't know why some people have trouble understanding this movie is not based upon historical accuracy, but rather a fanciful interpretation of an historical event.

I have a clue. I adore comic book movies... Batman Begins is one of my favorite movies of all time. I loved Spider-Man 2 as well, and I don't think it's a faithful representation of life as a freelance photographer in NYC. I also like non-super hero comic adaptations, Ghost World and Road to Perdition were awesome movies in my opinion...BUT..

BUT... 300 was emotionally barren to me. I don't care about the history of sparta, bleh, I didn't care about the history of 911 when I saw United 93 (amazing movie). 300 was just emotionally immature - it was all a macho testosterone fest in my opinion. The writing was bad (I didn't say inaccurate, I said bad), there was too much damn slow-motion, and I didn't give one crap about any of the characters.

It was like watching cut scenes from a beautiful video game.

Action movies can be dumb but still have a soul. Look at Blade 2 - cheesy (yet fun) dialogue and, strangely, I cared about the characters. 300 was style over substance to me and, while that could be fun, I expect more.

List of action movies that I think give you the whole package - a good time, something to think about, and some emotional pay off instead of macho showboating:
-Terminator 1 and 2
-The work of Shane Black (imdb him)
-Die Hard 1 and 3
-Braveheart
-Batman Begins
-Spider-Man 2
-Kill Bill

Maybe it's that I just don't like Frank Miller, I thought Sin City had the same feeling, style over substance and character.

um, two things I need to point out:

Sparta did not commit to the war when the 300 defended her. Rather, the King took 300 of the finest soldiers. That much is known, and no where has it been said that any other Spartan citizens/soldiers were their to aid them. Nor were spears replaced in the battle. Once broken, they defaulted to their short swords.

as far as the argument about their garments, again no one can claim full knowledge because it is truly unknown. It is customary for the Spartans to wear chest plates, HOWEVER they were not provided by the military and the typical Spartan brought his own. What was normally worn, and what the King and his 300 wore, may not necessarily match, and it is likely that since they knew they were most likely heading off towards death, they may have wanted as little weight as possible. The shield alone was heavy enough.

regardless, from what I have read the movie/graphic novel seem to be relatively accurate, especially for being a graphic novel. Of course there was added drama to help make it something one would want to read/watch, but that point still stands.

I'd say thats the case. There should be certain expectations when knowing something is based off a graphic novel. Same can be said when purchasing a graphic novel. A good portion of them have a good deep story that you don't expect. Some are purely art-driven. I'd say 300 is a combination of that, but thats from my standpoint, because I thoroughly enjoyed the story presented in 300. And I also felt connected to King Leonidas and Queen Gorgo, as well as to the Captain and his son.

I liked it a lot. I was surprised that started off how they did. I thought they were going to be worried about a lot of people complaining because that alone can get a lot of complaints from people.
