They're both over $30k... I think that's where the similarities end.

Same motor / drivetrain, RWD, same mfg. The G coupe is almost identical to the 350 in terms of performance. The new one probably even outclasses it somewhat (30 extra hp).

Given the excellent (for an entry-luxury midsize vehicle) performance of the G, and the underwhelming (for the sports-car $30-$35k class) performance of the Z (compared to EVO, GTO, etc) .. I don't know how Nissan manages to sell 350Zs when the customer can walk across the lot and buy a G for a slight bit more $$.

Now if Nissan offered their 5.6L V8 (nearly 400tq, broad powerband) in a 560ZX model, then we'd really have something to talk about

In this price range, the OP should check out the TL. It's way above average in every area.

So because they use the same drivetrain and they're made by the same company they're near identical? One is a luxury sedan... the other is a sports car...

The performance is nearly identical along with the same motor, drivetrain, transmission, etc, etc.

'Nearly identical' might be a stretch, but they're pretty damned close in any area that matters.

EDIT: From Edmunds :

"For all intents and purposes, the G is a sports car. All the ingredients of a sport recipe are here: Z-car roots, voluptuous styling, brilliant steering, solid high-speed handling, 330 horsepower and a raucous exhaust note."

I still can't agree with that. The 350Z is a sports car. It looks like a sports car, it sounds like a sports car, it drives like a sports car. The G35 is sporty looking, for a luxury sedan, but nobody would mistake it for a sports car... and if it drove or sounded like a sports car it would be a failure in the luxury sedan segment.

Obviously you disagree with the editors at Edmunds (and just about every other major authority on cars such as C&D, MotorTrend, etc).

Another major failure of your outlook is the idea that there isn't a market for a luxury SPORT sedan. The whole movement towards higher HP, tighter handling, richer (but muted) exhaust notes, etc, have been undeniable in this market over the past 15 years. If this revolution hadn't occurred, the luxury sedan market would still be dominated by 200hp 6 cylinder cars w/4 speed autos, with little/no optimization for handling etc. The BMW 3-series is the pinnacle of this area, and the variants of competitors is now very wide :

Volvo
Mercedes
Acura
Lexus
Audi
etc

All offer high-performance (for the class) sedans that rival today's entry-level sports cars (Mustang, 350Z, etc) in performance, while offering superior class/styling/comfort.

I don't really care what Edmunds says... drawing a parallel between the G35 Sedan and the 350Z is ridiculous. If that's what they're doing, then yes, I disagree with them and I'm calling them ridiculous.

I'd like to hear what the rest of the AT forum crew have to say about it

pretty good suggestions so far.

I've seen 07 Maxima's for 20k (30k or so miles) at a local dealer.

VW GTI, GLI, Passat. But I'm biased. Perhaps an EOS if you want a convertible.

Edit...should have paid attention to the OP. He made his choice already and i responded in his other thread *smack head*

And you get to keep about 5k of that 30k.

25K for one of those??? geez there so tiny..

They don't price cars by the pound anymore.

No, but for 25K?? The 3 is no bigger than a Corolla! a lot of safer cars for that much
money!
Size does not = Safe
Driver = Safe

OP - how about an update on what you've found after more searching?

So sorry for not keeping up with this thread. I ended up buying this and I need some advice on driving it.

2007 Volkswagen Jetta Fahrenheit GLI 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 6spd Manual)
Number 945/1200 made.

Nice car I prefer the TL / G35, but the Jetta is a little more rare, at least around here. Plus, if you get a wild hair, you can chip/tune/bolt-on that thing into a beast. Personally I wouldn't touch it though, reliability > performance.
