My understanding is that they will only force the switch if something like 60% of the public is ready (meaning they have digital TVs or adaptors) otherwise it will continue to get pushed out at least a year at a time.

Dude, if I were you I would spend around $75 and get a TV stand made for 36" TVs before I knocked that thing over :Q

Also, why do some guys use female avatars (the icon that represents you)? Just wondering?

LOL! That's what I was going to say. You totally need a bigger TV stand. I get nervous just looking at that pic!

Haha. I know it looks bad. The stand I had for it was busted during my last move. Trust me though, the thing is so heavy, I have to throw myself against it to swivel it. And.. inside that cabinet are concrete blocks that keep the whole thing steady. =) It's my baby!

As for my avatar.. who knows. No real significance there. I just picked one. Though, my 3 best friends would not be suprised at all if I told them I was gay.(they think it will happen eventually) *sigh*

I just called my local store (Madison, WI) - 3 on order, they'll be arriving tomorrow or on the 18th. The person thought the 18th was more realistic.

I think I might get one - I currently have the 27" Tau and love it, plus it feels good to not buy Sony.

I have a 27in one. I won it first prize at our christmas party last year after 3 years of nothing. Heheh, i work at a grocery store, part time since i'm a college kid. To put it simply: i was sooooooo happy

Anyway, it didnt have the remote, or its possible we lost it that night, thats another story. The manual says its 480i (somthing like that) but i've never been able to get it to work with my dvd player in progressive scan mode, and ideas?

Other than that i LOVE this tv, its sooo going to college with me this nexy year, i didnt want to take it last year casue it wasent worth it to cary this BEAST 4 flights of stairs when we never watched tv in my room.

Pick one of these up if you find it at a deal, i would come home from school on the weekends, and i would watch star wars on dvd JUST to see the picture, its soooooo great.

after a day of thinking whether to buy it or not, i gave in. Went to wally world this evening to go ahead and pick up 1. Alas, no Tau in sight (all 4 of them). Asked CSR (i should know better), but she can't give me a straight answer. At the back of my mind, I know she wants to tell me this, "Leave me alone butthead, i'm just waiting for my shift to finish so i can get the hell out of here!"

oh well, its not meant to be!

tRaptor: I have a 27" Tau with 480i (27SX11), and my DVD plays just fine on thru the YPrPb component inputs. You may need to go into the setup screen of your DVD player and select component output. That's what I had to do on my Sampo model. IIRC, the Tau will autodetect the component signal on the Video 1 input, so no setup is needed on the TV. I can't say I saw much difference between the component and the SVHS, but it does look great.

Is a 27" to 32" a significant difference? I have two 27" but may need to retire one soon.

Damn Locke - it looks like a teenage hacker lives in that room or somethin' ... Nice collection of consoles goin' there too I count 6 ... PS1, SNES, one looks like it's covered in green astroturf or something (can't tell WHAT it is), Dreamcast, PS2 and the last one on the right looks like an original formfactor PS1. I think, not totally sure. Heh, nice.

Prediction 1: The FCC will have to postpone the 2006 deadline
Prediction 2: Most folks will not be impacted anyway because the FCC guidelines relate to actual you-need-an-antenna-to-pick-them-up locally broadcast TV signals, not to cable TV or satellite.

I'm kinda wondering the same thing. I have the 27" Tau and wonder whether it'd be good to go to a 32" or if I should save a bit longer and get a 36". I'm gonna go flat screen no matter what, it's just a matter of deciding what I want.

It is my impression that only air broadcast signals will be incompatible with analog TVs, plain old cable TV will still be analog, unless you upgrade to digital cable already available in most places.

I went to Circuit City tonight - they have the 32" Tau for $699 plus a $50 giftcard back. I told the nerdy salesguy that Walmart is selling the same model for $599, so with their 110% pricematch and $50 giftcard it would have been $540, definitely a great deal...

He's like, oh, it's not the same model - theirs probably doesn't have: (reading from little sales card with price on it)....

"Component Audio Inputs"
"Velocity Scan Modulation"
"Digital Comb Filter"

I'm like, WTF, I don't think it'd be a Tau if it didn't have that stuff. The guy's like, "Oh no, there are lots of variations of that model"

I had him call and compare model numbers and he claimed they weren't the same one.

I'm going to wait til my Walmart gets them in on the 18th and take a few pictures of it with the model number printed on the box and bring it back to him and show him.

I later went to Panasonic's site and yep, they only make one 32" Tau (there is one other but it has PIP and is over $1100), so these are most likely the same models.

That dude was a douche.

aren't taus comparable to wegas?
If better is comprable, then they are. The only VVegas that are really good are their high-end models which also are of course are HDTVs. Their analog models are not really that great and then their cheap line is just average.

I wouldn't say they're average...
I got the 27" Wega last year and I LOVE it!

Just because you think you love it doesn't mean you actually do. How do you know you haven't convinced yourself that you like it to relieve the cognitive dissonance you may have from spending more money on an inferior TV? Not to mention just because you love it doesn't mean its not average. I'm sure there are a lot of average kids out there with moms that still love them. [/Psychology Major's Rant]

Um, it won't work on progressive b/c it's 480i. For progressive, you need 480p. And a TV with 480p is by definition at least an EDTV (and likely an HDTV that does 1080i). You can't do progressive on an analog set. . . .

Personally, I do not think it is the best time to buy a TV right now. The HDTV transition is occurring, albeit slowly at first and now more rapidly. However, at the moment, there don't seem to be any great choices in TV sets for medium/long-term purchase. Analog sets won't be able to take advantage of HDTV when it becomes very prevalent and also can't even do 480p. Digital sets have artifact problems with analog signals, thus making them look worse than TVs 1/5 the price on analog transmissions (still the vast majority of programming). So, really, unless you absolutely want to get a new TV now and don't mind upgrading in just a couple of years, I wouldn't be doing any upgrades, such as 27" to 32" analog. Just my 2 cents of course. . . .

Oh yeah, do you know their warranty - I would get the 3-5 yr plan on the TV b/c bigscreen TVs are notorious for problems later in their life. The low end Wegas are the worst offenders.

Just saw this TV at Wal-Mart last night and was really amazed. THIS THING IS HDTV! The sticker says model number is 32SC13, which was probably special-made for Wal-Mart since it does not appear on the Panasonic web site. The closest TV they show is the CT-32HX42, which has PIP (this one probably doesn't have it), but the MSRP is $1499. The Wal-Mart TV has "HDTV 1080i" written on the lower front panel. This is one heavy sucker, though - around 165 pounds, because of the flat tube.

But then again, you really are not gaining much since there is nothing on TV nowadays anyways. I aint blowing that amount of loot so I can watch horrible tv like will and grace (my money says grace is the guy). But for every cause there is an effect. if people cant afford to get a tv, the will get movies. and once dvd burners hit the mainstream with faster speeds, a bootlegging there will be. The cheapest solution that i can think of is getting a PCTV HDTV tuner card, since they are only in the $200 range now. Thats my 2pesos!

Is everyone talking about the same TV? Because it would be unprecedented for a 32" HDTV to be priced at $600. Even the Samsung EDTV, which can be easily hacked to display 1080i, has a retail price of like $699. If there were a namebrand 32" HDTV for $599, I would imagine people would have heard of it before. . . .

I believe that would be a different model. The regular Taus are have black cases. The HDTV version are silver.(And a bit more $$) =)

I just called all 4 Walmarts in Lexington, KY and 3 of them said they didn't have them in stock yet and didn't know when they'd come in. The 4th one said they had ordered them and they'd be shipped within the next 2 weeks.

It's definitely the CT-32SC13 (special walmart model?) and not the traditional CT-32SX12 Panasonic distributed one. I confirmed the $597 price as well.

Keep me updated!
