My community college was about $3200/year which got me an A.S., and transferring to a state college to finish out my B.S. was $5200/year. Of course this was also 14 years ago...

~30% of students at the UC's get a full ride including room and board (which is more than 2x expensive than tuition).

where the hell did you get that number? do you go to a UC? i only know 2 people that had full rides.

You have to compare everything else (cost of living), not just tuition. It's probably very expensive to live near UCLA. A quick check on State College, PA on craigslist shows that rent is about $400-500 a month. I see at least $750 /month in LA, most of them are more expensive.

I disagree. Room & board prices at colleges rarely reflect the cost of living in the surrounding area. Heck, where one of my sons goes to school, (if they offered such a loan), he could get together with 2 friends and purchase a house for just the cost of board for 3 or 4 years.

Uhhh CA universities are NOT CHEAP at all. I've talked to friends in Ohio and Georgia, and UCs are expensive compared to many other public schools.

I paid around $7500 a year for tuition. It's not credit hour, and plus such benchmarks are unreliable. It's really how much per semester. We talked about huge fee hikes since I've been in school, and honestly, it's about the same still... Maybe not. Hahaha.

Here's the problem, the UC system is the best public school system in the world. Cal and UCLA cover the top 10 like no other. Even UCSD excels in many fields. You could take mid and lower tier UCs and they'd rank better than many other state schools.

CA is getting more Asians and more Hispanics. The Asians crowd the top UCs and then the people who do shitty expect to go to the top schools still. No, you can't survive Berkeley, you got it? I see lots of people come from shitty communities and think they are business bound in Berkeley, and then they run into the cutthroat Asian Big-4-bound-accounting folk who completely slaughter them in econ classes.... Then they come back and say "Man, Berkeley is fcking hard." Yeah it is hard. That's why only the best go. Shrug. What do people want from the #1 English school, #4 law school, #3 engineering school, #5 undergrad business program, etc etc etc....? The same applies to other UCs.

The UC system already has a more generous admit rate than any private school. Berkeley and UCLA grant like 23-25% admissions and they're the most applied to in the nation.

I think as these institutions get better and better, standards need to go up. Sorry that fees go up. The state is broke, what do you want? More of a free ride?

Room & board reflects cost of living. I lived in a triple dorm and the fee was $1010 a month. That's absolutely ridiculous.

It's even more now. Where I lived is now $13,768 per YEAR. Divide by 10 months and thats $1300 a month. 30% increase over my 04-05 rate.

Now look at UC Riverside:
http://my.ucr.edu/LIFEATUCR/Pages/Housing.aspx

See a difference?

I moved out my 2nd year and got an apartment. 2 BEDROOM for $2250 / month. When I moved out my 3rd year into a crappier apt it was $1490 a month. That was considered dirt cheap. My friends were paying $1600+. i got a slick deal or something. By the time I graduated, my building was going for $1990 a month and it was considered "cheap."

BTW if you're interested about the protests today... all I have to do is look at my facebook or Twitter feed and I can find lots

http://twitpic.com/q9fq6 - Professor keeps teaching outdoors using the wall as a chalkboard

http://ow.ly/E7MC - some stupid blog with a pic of someone getting hit by a baton

"if you are involved in the protests at Wheeler and receive a possible conduct violation notice or would like to file a greivance against UCPD go to the Student Advocate's Office in 204 Eshleman and they can help you out!"

http://twitpic.com/q9smf - This is the protest and the students supposedly occupied the 2nd floor of the building which is already a cluster fvck... I hate the upstairs there.

http://twitpic.com/q9esb

BTW this is Berkeley if anyone's wondering. I don't give a crap about LA. Our protests > *.

Edit: wow I should really have taken this day off and taken my photography gear and go out for some shooting =)

Approximately 200 protestors are continuing to demonstrate on the south side of campus in the area around Wheeler Hall. Wheeler Hall is occupied by protestors and the building remains locked.

All classes at Wheeler are suspended until further notice and employees who work in Wheeler Hall are advised that they should plan on not being able to enter the building for the remainder of the work day. Employees should confirm alternative work arrangements with their supervisor, as possible. Instructors who teach in Wheeler Hall are being contacted by e-mail.

Fire alarms have been intentionally set off in several buildings including Barrows, Dwinelle, and Sproul Hall. The fire department is verifying that these are false alarms and will allow people to reenter buildings when it is safe to do so.

The safety of our campus community, including those involved in this protest, are an utmost priority of our police as they work to resolve the situation.

Thank you to all members of the campus community for your continued patience in this matter. Please check for updates throughout the day on the Berkeley home page http://berkeley.edu

Recent grad of UCLA right here. For people saying that $10k isn't that much, that's just for school fees. Cost of living around UCLA is expensive as hell (10-13k per year for dorming, avg 2 bedroom apt in westwood is $2600-$3000 a month).

Fees are still comparable to other state universities, but even with the fee increases the school is cutting back. Classes that were once 300 people lectures are now 400-500 lectures, with the same amount of TA's. Also, they've cut classes, closed libraries (for a while there was no 24 hour library), and have this plan to reduce the number of units for each major to 75 units in order to make education more cost-effective.

Also, don't believe the police when they say it's been peaceful. My friend got tased for sitting and refusing to move. Pics at the link below:

And this is a mid-year fee increase. It starts effective for next winter, which is a problem since financial aid and loans are awarded in the fall based on how much fees should be. So it's tough for people on financial aid since they won't have enough financial aid and they'll need to get more loans or a job on really short notice.

Half of the fee increase happens next winter. The rest happens in the fall.

I understand that the UC system is public, but tuition at my (private) school is over 40k. 10k is a pittance in comparison. Perhaps this is apples to oranges, but even the new higher rate is cheap.

Tuition + fees at the school I went to (in downtown Philadelphia, a fairly expensive place in itself) is now $38k+

For some reason, a $2500 hike doesn't seem that bad.

In all seriousness though...shut the fuck up, you whiny little kids. THE STATE IS BROKE! Aren't these college kids? They should know better than that. The money has to come from somewhere, and CA doesn't have it...so pony up the dollars.

So basically you're saying that the Asian students are subsidizing the Mexicans. Great.

10K is not much compared to what other top schools are charging. Cal, UCLA are one of the top rank schools in teh nation. tuition is still far less for instate students compared to other top private schools like Stanford. If your an out of state student then its pretty much the same.

The idiots who think that protesting and taking over buildings will somehow magically end the fee hike are only kidding themselves. its just an excuse.

The CSUs and UCs would be smart not to wait for the even bigger idiots in Sacramento to figure things out. I assure you the close to 1 billion both are hoping for will not come.

Sacramento's answer is fuzzy math and tax hikes only more taxes will drive people away. That unemployment is high, good luck getting anything close to their BS revenue projections.

The point of having one of the highest state income tax rates is lower in-state shit.

UCLA huh? I'm surprised that the Asian community doesn't claim it as racial discrimination.

Ha ha. UCRA?

Fact is the state has been lowering it's share of the cost of UC every year for years. The state provides less than 50% now AFAIK. And professors make like $100-200k now, wtf.
