3200+ vs 3700+ overclocking potential?

I could save $180 by going with 2x3200+ vs 2x3700+. However, I want maximum CPU power within my price range ($229 for the 3700+ is the upper limit). I've read of easy overclocks on the AMD stock HSF up to 2.5ghz on the 3200+. Any corroborating reports from ATers?

How about the 3700+?

Thanks!

My venice e6 3200+ can go to 2.65ghz@1.52v and my current 3500+ is 2.915ghz@1.45v. I think the 3700+ will better for you because of the higher multiplier. If you have a mobo that don't oc well go with the 3700+ most definitely.

I've got both

My 3200+ (Vience) on a Cooler Master Hyper 6 does 2.65GHz with 1.52V

My 3700+ (San Diego) with a Scythe Ninja does 2.8GHz with 1.57V

Both are great processors, but to be honest i'd save your $80+ and get the 3200+.

QFT.

I have a 3200+ Venice 939 @ 2.6Ghz with 1.45v using the stock heatsink.

Runs cool and good. The stock heatsink isn't at all bad on an A64, even better on an Opteron.

San Diego>>>Venice by a long shot

check out this thread @ XS:
Official San Diego Overclocking Thread

the last few pages show recent results and all stepping information for those chips. so if you see one you like the results for on air cooling....go out and find it

just fwiw, you'll never get a Venice stable @~3ghz on air, but people are doing that and a bit more on air with Sandies.

Thread Hijack: Anyone got any idea of the wattage differences between a San Diego and Venice at the same frequency? Just interested how much the larger die with 1Mb cache effects it...

get the 3700+...

these have been known to hit 2.7-3ghz on air (3ghz only if ur lucky) , and geberlly clock higher than most venices i have seen...the 3700+ also have the 1MB of L2 cache...

having said all that the venice cores of the 3000+,3200+,3500+ and 3800+ are also very stable overclockers...

for example,my 3000+ venice is currently running at 2.64ghz @ 1.525Vcore 100% stable...

end of the day both are good procs

thanks for the advice guys, I'm pretty much set on the 3200+ and stock HSF as I'm inexperienced overclocking and 3ghz is too lofty a goal for me, plus I like the idea of saving $200

After reading more i'm definately going with the Asus A8n5X.

I'll be happy with a 400mhz overclock. Should be a pretty safe bet huh?

Big Typhoon and your goal of a 400mhz oc is a given on the venice. Good luck and don't let the oc bug bite and you'll be tinkering for more speed

Ah so not such a given with the stock HSF? We're talking an extra $108 for the big typhoon. Totalling $1215 vs $1107 with stock.

thanks, it would be nice to have a stable overclock

BigTyphoon is not $108, it's less than $50
