320MB 8800GTS far too slow

Hi, I just purchased a Sparkle 320MB 8800GTS. It was to replace my older 7800GT.

My system is a Pentium 4 3.2GHz 541 system with 2GB DDR2 RAM and a Gigabyte 8I915P Duo-Pro motherboard. Yes, I know you'll say 'its your CPU' but thats definitely not the case.

My friend has an identical system (right down to the mobo) except he has a 7950GT. While I get 30ish FPS in FEAR at highest settings (excluding soft shadows) @1024x768, he never goes below 40 at 1280x1024, 4xAA with soft shadows on. It seems his PC beats mine at every turn.

I got 5058 3DMarks in 06 when I ran it today, which is very low for an 8800GTS I believe. It seems like its just not happy in my system - the Nvidia CP won't let me do more than 4xAA! My 7800GT could do 8x, whats going on? 8800GTS cards are supposed to be able to do 16x!

Anyway, if you could help me out, it would be great, I really need to know if its the card or.. whatever it could be. Thanks.


PS; when I put the card it in ran fine on my 7800GT drivers at boot (158.19) and got the same performance once I installed 158.22 (latest certified drivers for Windows XP). The driver install was clean - I uninstalled the 158.19s, rebooted, did a driver clean, then installed 158.22, so it can't be that..

could still be drivers ...

when the 150 series first came out, if you had any other nv drivers installed, they recommended this procedure:

1) uninstall old driver
reboot
2) install 150 series driver
reboot
3) uninstall 150 series driver
reboot
4) reinstall 150 series driver
reboot


... there's something their old uninstall or other driver cleaners miss that causes problems.

Make sure Vsync is off. And, for the love of all that is holy, please use higher than 1024x768 resolution. If that's the res you're stuck at, your old 7800 would suffice.

Haha, this monitor goes up to 1280x1024 but I'm not prepared to whiz up the resolution that high until I can get it running OK in 1024x768

I can try now anyway - I'll see if uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers as you said helps. Keep the suggestions rolling people!

PS, yes Vsync is off.

Keys you are way off! The Ageia Physx is so advanced, it creates jaggies during explosions to simulate distorted vision in warfare

I think the OP has a driver problem, seeing how I can select up to 16xQ AA (but I'm not stupid lol).

My brothers EVGA Superclocked 8800GTS 320mb seems to be blazing fast, he only sees a slow down when he starts turning on AA. Weird...

there is the likely problem

are you MB drivers up-to-date?
[did you accidentally uninstall them when you did a driver clean?]

perhaps try reinstalling your OS [overtop itself first]

is everything OK in Device Manager? ... all the DX checks OK?

I like the Anisotropic Filtering of the Floor, is makes the floor looks so blurry, damn. Looks like a PS2 pix.

yeah you could well be closer to cpu bottle neck that gpu.

if thats the case a faster GPU wont do much, but i think intodays games you should notice a hefty difference even at that res.

just make sure you crank the AA/ AF

(oh better check your AA settings actually, make sure your not running something daft like 8xSSAA or something)

Well I pulled the trigger on a 320 GTS almost 2 weeks ago and I, too, am unimpressed. I also bought a new mobo for the occasion as I was using an ASRock DUA to tide me over while I changed my hardware. Unless I missed something, my framerates are BARELY improved over my 6800 GT Golden Sample. Yes I have bumped up my settings ONE NOTCH, and am ruinning only 4x antiscopic. I have tried EVERY driver available from 100.xx to 158.xx. I double uninstalled/double installed each one. I think I'll return it and try a 7950 512. Here's my gear:

Abit IB9 mobo
C2D E6600
OCZ gold memory
Vista 32 bit Ultimate

Ah well I had high hopes.
