Not that I want to get too heavily in the car debates.. but..

If you want a commuter car, that is designed to be driven day in, day out for "normal" daily driving, then fine, add the supercharger and the exhaust and the little jetta will rock! Heck, do the same to an Integra and get similar results. Both cars were designed to be commuter cars that have good gas mileage and handle the day to day driving just fine.

BUT, I'd take a 1992 IROC Z28 with 350 ponies any day for my driving needs. I had a 1988 Z28 (305) and it was pretty darn fast (even if it was old, rattled, etc) compared to most things on the road. I could take newer mustangs off the line and all imports that came up to me (mainly integras, a few civics, etc). They could hang up to about 40mph, but after that, I could roll right pass them going to 90 (in 2nd gear no less).

The Camaro was never meant to be a commuter car (commute in the 60s? cmon, they hardly had the traffic we have today). The Camaro was meant to be a complete pony car with little much else in it (sound, AC, nothing more really). Its not a real fair comparison when comparing these two cars, but when performance comes to mind, all cars can be judged nearly equally.

I'm sure the stock Jetta could handle the turning faster and park into compact spots, but with some mods to the suspension I could have fixed up the Camaro quite nice. I have given my car to my brother and now have an Acura CL-S (2001) and I'll stick with it. It doesn't have as much power as the Camaro (the toque is what really counts), but I'm not into racing and need a commuter car with a little "umph" to it when I get onto the open roads in LA.

vash, even tho i'm into imports (literally, i don't like american cars), but u explained it very well.

the whole thing ppl were missing was the last paragraph.

Also. if you have $, you can do wat u plz. If you have enuf $$$, stick a vette engine in some import or wat not. I'm not a technician, but i figure if you have a couple million laying around, you can make a car or something to ever aspect you ever wanted in your life.

Your prices are a bit off If you do a "make your own" VW on the Canada site, as I've done many times they start at $20k for a baseline Golf. If you pay about $27-28k you can get a Jetta with a diesel engine (excellent mileage) and a leather interior. Its a sharp car. By the way VW's have to be driven to be appreciated. I know that they are more pricey than a civic but I drove in a new civic and a new golf on the same day and it was apples to oranges.

$30-31k CAN will get you into a GTI VR6. When you get a VW you're not paying for size and in many cases not performance (although the vr6 and 1.8T are pretty speedy) but they are a very solid vehicle.

so what does 30k now these days give you??
not alot of preformance (150hp is decent but 30,000 vehicle i personally would expect more)
what do you mean by solid vehicle??
any car thatc osts 30k should be a solid vehicle but in my IMHO the 30k your putting in for a jetta...your not getting out of it...granted i have never driven it...but looking from the specs one could expect more for 30 grand?

Well lets look at the competition? Perhaps a nissan Maxima GXE - thats the barebones model for the same price. Before we go any further I'd personally take a maxima over the VW, but with the VW you get a more solid feel (low-end maximas don't feel _that_ great), leather, side-impact airbags.

Of course if you want diesel VW is the only real option in an inexpensive vehicle...you know I really did agree with you about VW's being a waste of money until I drove one a couple of months ago. It felt so damn solid on the road, had 8 speaker stereo stock (thats on the bottom of the line one), and you could just tell that it was put together with quality.

uh... can a supercharger do a 50% increase in power safely?

Oh yea, it depends on the motor though.

If it's a BMW or S2000 or Audi that splattered all over this site, No it's not safe. A supercharger brings more power by forcing more and and allowing more fuel in the system, and at the same time raising the compression. If you start at the ENGINES LIMIT like the BMW's and stuff that are totally overrated then yes you will blow your system up. But actually the VR6 is a good desighn for it's buffer they left on the block, Nothing like a stang thats left from 8.5:1 compression but still in a safe zone.

BTW I picked up my latest Truckin Mag, That thing is only like 350 pages, whats up with that is the aftermarket world shrinking

Many people daily drive their supercharged or turbocharged M3. Power is from 350 - 400 HP. Never heard their engine blow up or anything.

Alpina, the german tuner for BMWs have sold a LOT of turbocharged BMWs. No blown engine there too.

Many people are totally clueless on what BMW is about.

A lot of Audis come with turbocharger. I think Audi probably make the most # of cars equipped with a turbo. Why would you put another supercharger if you already have an excellent turbo?

Honda, on the other hand just doesn't want anything to do with forced induction.

Here's an example,
M3 with 11 psi. 324 RHP, 354 lb-ft.

VW will have aweomse line-up for 2002.that 170HP (180 in reality) will certainly make that car fly, remember the engine is a small 1.9 liter turbo, weight very little therefore great handling car!!
VR6 with 201 HP and 6 speed is awesome also..
GTI drops in price for those who are interested (its the car we had in superbowl commercials dropping from a tree). GTI is a monster... for 22 grand it is a steal sports car, unless you can afford 2002 M3.

a) you have never even been inside, or driven, a model year 98 or above volkswagen. this much is obvious.
b) YOU CAN'T COMPARE NEW CAR PRICES TO USED CAR PRICES. idiot. a jetta is priced just right for it's position in the market. by your logic, your precious Maxima (while i agree it is a nice car) for $27k american is a POS because you can get a 95 vette for that much. man, you really are canadian, aren't you?
