Had a crash with 16GB system a couple weeks back when I ran out of memory during photogrammetry test..
Been wondering if I need more.

My friend RAM is very affordable now, but the prices will go up in next couple months.

I dont know why you had a crash. If you OC then that is reason why. Try everything stock and run the phototest again. Lets make sure your RAM sticks are good. Put another 16GB kit same one, which looks like your going to do. Should workout nicely, youll get 32GB max.. Then you can have apps like spybot beta and all that stuff and not worry about RAM, you will not care if theres 80 processes or 200. theres enough RAM and cache. Do it especially for you. how about if you wanna have things running then launch 2 games and tast between them, you can do that. gl

I'm a software developer and have 32GB ram.......... trying to create excuses why the rest of you will need 32GB of ram down the road.

(Have had some large models that use 27GB of RAM; more memory means that you can process more data efficiently)

of thing is sure and boring when you have 32GB, i just understand it whereas i just have 12GB :

you need more space on your ssd because windows create a 32gb file for the cache virtua lmemory !!

so a 64gb ssd is not a good thing at all !

actually, i have 12gb and my virtual cache file is on a hard drive cause i have not more enought space on my ssd (64 gb)..
so alternating between ssd-ram and HDD make so lag sometimes !

so, the more you have memory, the higher ssd you'll need !

Actually 4-8GB is the sweet-spot. Even 8GB is overkill unless you have some specific niche needs.
I'd say 8 GB is the sweet spot minimum if you multitask. 4 GB is a limiting for a main machine with a modern OS. However 16 GB is cheap these days so it doesn't hurt to get it. 32 GB is overkill for the vast majority of people though.

I personally have 12 in my iMac which is perfect for me, and 8 in my Windows machine. I only have 4 GB in my MacBook Pro, but the usage on that is really light.

I was running out of memory whilst playing Battlefield 3 and having IE10 open with a few tabs. Had to upgrade to 8 gigs since I didn't want to page to disk instead. 8 gigs is my recommended minimum for x64 gaming systems. On 32-bit systems with a pagefile you can get away with 4 or even 2 if you know what you are doing.

32gb is nice to have, though. Wouldn't the software ramdisk be a bit CPU dependant?

You probably don't see the need for a window or LED lighting in a case either.

no one needs a window or lighting in a case, now whether on not you want those things is another thing entirely.

I don't need 16 gig of memory but I did want it.

I have 32GB of ram.

I wanted ECC and all virtualization features, so I picked up an Asus AM3+ motherboard. (already had a 6 core phenom 2) While I was at it, I figured why not max out memory? On top of that, my 8GB of ram in my previous system was insufficient to do normal stuff on the host while running a decently specced VM in the background. Now with 32GB of ram, I can do real work in a VM without having to shut down my browser or anything on the host. (compiling android from scratch across 6 threads can take up 8GB of ram)

Ram is cheap and I doubt DDR3 is going to drop much more in price than it already has, so why not max out now? Then do it all over again when DDR4 launches.

I just quadruple my RAM from 4GB to 16GB because Newegg is having a sale on the Corsair Vengeance CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3 1600 kit... I was gonna get the 2x 4GB vengeance blue kit from Amazon, but for $21.25 more I can double that, so I said, why not.

I'm gonna see how many 1080p videos I can play at the same time with this much RAM when it comes in. At least I know I won't be bottleneck by RAM any time soon. Craziness!

I have 64GB of ram. I use it to run my bank of virtual floppy drives.

Some of you just weren't born hardcore like I was.

I have 16gb in my main rig only because I bought it on sale. 60 bucks is insanely cheap for that amount of ram.

Well, I would gladly sacrifice my hardcore-ness and use that pool of memory for ZFS instead of floppy drives.

Seriously: I bet most of you guys actually have too few RAM in your systems. Many people argue that RAM is used by applications, and if your applications use maybe 4GB of memory - the rest is wasted.

However, in this area of virtual memory management, all operating systems use RAM as filecache. Due to applications RAM-requirements not growing as fast as RAM quantity, this leads to much RAM that can be used for other purposes like filecaching. With 32GB of RAM memory, all your frequently used applications, games and whatnot can be stored in RAM instead. Best of all: you don't need to do anything to make this work; it works on all modern computer systems.

You can test this yourself:
1) Open task manager and look for the performance tab for the three vital memory specs: used (by applications), cached (filecache) and free/unused/wasted memory. Unless you recently rebooted or your RAM pool is too small, your cached RAM should be about 80% of maximum RAM, with only 10-20% actually used by applications.
2) Try to start your browser the first time, look at the cached value which should grow whenever you read stuff from disk. Also notice that the second time you open your browser - or whatever application - it will open much faster than the first time. On very fast SSDs, the difference with RAM filecache is not that great anymore. But genernally your RAM is superior in latencies particularly.
3) Notice that the amount of Available memory in most cases is almost equal to Cached+Free memory. In other words: all the filecache is not actually memory-in-use, but instead can be freed whenever an application requires it. Generally most applications are 32-bit and thus are limited to 2GiB of RAM usage per process (3GiB with special compiler flags).

I maxed out 32GB in my ESXi box extremely quickly I want more bad but I need a license to do that.. The $500 VMWare License + another $500 in memory is not possible with my other pressing expenses

I paid more money for my laptop 16GB and previous desktop of 8GB than my current 32GB desktop. Why not if I can? Photoshop loves it.

i was able to flip my 4 x 4GB (16GB) of DDR3-1600 @ CAS8 for 4 x 8GB (32GB) of DDR3-1866. Was an interesting proposition
