This happened in KY, they live in IL? He's fucked. I don't know how many points that will put on his driving record, but I suspect it's gonna be quite a few. Obviously, his BEST option is to try to get traffic school...IF the judge in KY will allow it, but that's never a given. I've seen quite a few people get denied here in Kahleeforneeya due to the severity of the ticket.

Not sure what this has to do with anything:

Oh the kicker is the grandparents are both reverends in churches nearby.

nor why any of the stuff about moving in together has any relevance, why you mentioned that everyone (including clergy :roll has advised them against it...

Is the kid otherwise responsible? (obviously getting tagged for 96/70 doesn't show responsibility, but shit happens sometimes)

IMO, he best option is to go to court and talk to the judge. Ask for traffic school if it's offered. Pay the fines and keep his foot off the accelerator.

Ridiculous clergy information aside - I have had a 26 mph ticket in Kentucky, I went before the judge, and they knocked it down to 24 mph over. Hooray

When I was 18 I got a 96 in a 55 in northern Cali on I-5. I just did court by mail and payed a huge fine. My insurance went up, but it wasn't like SR-22 or anything.

If he's able to go to court and kiss ass that's the best option IMO. Admit guilt, say you won't do it again, pay your fine and learn your lesson.

It really depends on where they were pulled, rural vs city, and who it was that stopped them e. Sounds like he got lucky and it was an understanding officer. Here I know a few deputies that would have arrested him irregardless of his situation. There was someone here that was caught doing 74 in a 55 and was charged with reckless endangerment + jail time. Really it depends on how often the courts see that type of thing there. If it isn't common then they tend to be a bit more harsh.

The best advice I could give would be to make sure he addresses everyone involved with respect and shows remorese. I know some younger kids who get that cocky attitude and act like its nothing, and that usually leads to trouble.

Ok, our now-19 year old daughter and her boyfriend (20 year old from FL) were driving back from FL to Illinois with a car load of stuff (he's moving here). He apparently was tagged doing 96 in a 70 in Kentucky.

He's claiming he was 'tired' and just 'wanted to get here'. Our daughter SAYS she was trying to get him to slow down but couldn't. The officer said he would have arrested him had they not had a car-full of stuff and he was moving up here, and our daughter only has a driving permit.

My wife and I are going to have a few words to say to him when we see him, thats' a given. Im' more curious as to what he's going to face insurance-wise, $$-wise, etc.

According to what I can find, 26+ gets a mandatory court appearance and unstated fine. He's 20, clean record until now. Apparently there are 2 other charges, improper lane change ? and something else. It was LIDAR from an overpass.

I'm in no way defending him, he did it, he needs to pay, but since our daughter is involved it would be nice to know what kind of sanctions are going to happen (could) here. Against our (and grandparents who are reverends, friends) they are getting an apartment and moving in together. Yes she's an adult and can do whatever she wants, but still wants us to fully support her $$-wise).

I'm not sure why it's any of your business actually.

If you think you may be somewhoe finacially responsible becasue you finacially support your daighter - heave a chat with her and make sure none of your $$$ goes to his insurance bills.

If she does pay for it - you have another issue entirely.

Is she in full time school/college?

Yeah, if it's his first offense, he could get lucky. He shouldn't play up the "I just wanted to get there angle." That just makes it sound like he's refusing to take responsibility.

He should own up to his actions, say he's sorry, say he'll never do it again, and see what the judge says. I would be that if he comes across as responsible enough and shows that this sort of behavior really isn't a day-to-day thing for him, he'll get off pretty light.

It is a traffic violation. Just make sure he shows up in court and begs for a reduced charge... maybe since he has a clean record and can get into a driving class (which may be inconvenient for him). The only thing it will affect is his insurance rates and his wallet will be a few hundred dollars lighter.

Well I forgot to mention the really ironic part of this - he was going to ship his stuff back to Illinois and they were going to fly, but since he just quit his job in FL and doesn't have one yet in IL, they DROVE to save the money.

Reckless is a misdemeanor is most states. I would try to talk to the prosecutor and see if s/he would plea him out to a speeding violation (infraction). If he has a pretty clean record and the prosecutor isn't a complete asshat, it shouldn't be much of a problem. Then, since it's only an infraction, traffic school is a possibility to prevent rates from going up.

Not the smartest thing, that's for sure. I'm waiting to have a chat about it with him. Ya know, responsibility. He wipes out at damn near 100 on the interstate by himself and rolls down an embankment, that's one thing, but someone else in the car and moderate traffic around him that just makes it worse.

I don't have any kids, so I don't really know how you must feel about his actions. But I do remember being young and stupid. I went to all sorts of street races and raced myself in high school and college. Now, I look back at it and realize how stupid it was.

We were all young and stupid, just don't dump on him too hard!

Your daughter is 19 and obviously an adult now and so I guess you're willing/able to let her make decisions on her own. But 96 in a 70 is reckless beyond need and shows a lack of respect for your daughter, her parents and everyone else on the road. "Just wanting to get there" is a shitty excuse. Drive a safer speed or pull over and take a nap.

I'd say that's a tad extreme. If there was no traffic or light traffic and he drives a performance car that 96mph could be very reasonable and not at all dangerous.

I'm not sure if Illinois has that, or would it need to be in KY? He's going to have to talk his way through this, but since he is with our kid I'd prefer he not lose his license and have to have someone ? drive him around. I'm pretty sure the appearance is mandatory though.

I haven't yet heard where on I-24 it was (how far away from us).

Didn't know a 4-cyl Chevy Cavalier could do 96? LOL.

My Z24 would blow right past 96.

Not that I would ever do that...

He just needs to talk to the DA and Judge and tell them the truth. He was tired and got in a hurry and he won't do it again. Dress nicely and act like a responsible young man who's sorry.

Speak with the judge, get it reduced. He was 1 mph over.

He might be able to appeal by mail, but that would depend on the state.

Curious myself so I called my uncle, he worked as a balif for the local magistrate for many years. This is what he told me.

$100-200 for speeding + $20-$50 for other charges. 4-6 points on license , possible suspension but if he takes the drivers ed school he can get that waived. + probation for 2 years where if he does anything like that again he loses his license.

So quite a bit.
This is in NC not kentucky though so it could be a lot different.
