Thanks for the tip-worked for me. If possible the original poster should modify the first post and title to reflect this final cost.

BTW, the webpage now says its available online. I found one locally.

Can I one only use 2 of the 3 slots to take advantage of dual channel capabilities?

If so is 512 in dual channel better than 768 not in dual channel mode?

The salesman at my local RadioShack told me that the 10% off for a first time credit card purchase doesn't apply to computer purchases (it applies to everything except computers). Bummer! That extra $60 off would've really sweetened the deal. How'd you guys get so lucky!?

Man, with the extra 10% off it would have been even hotter than the Vampirized Chicken Deal from Albertsons a few years ago!

I hate to say it, but that actually makes me feel better - I was not offered the 10% off deal, and was kicking myself a bit after it was posted. I still feel very good about the deal for $349, but $289 would have been amazing.

It took my salesman about 10 minutes of pretty hard work to get the computer to get the 10% deduction to work, but it eventually did. He had to reenter the order a couple of times. I guess it was worth blowing my lunch hour over.

There are only 2 DIMM slots, #1 and #3. So load both for dual channel.

Aren't nforce boards that support A64's using the AC97? They don't have the nice sound no more.

Not too bad, throw a vid card and some more memory in it, and you got a decent system.

Well, I bought one and it's great. I was lucky enough to get the credit card 10% discount, and the total was $539.99 + $32.40 tax = $572.39. $200 off from Radio Shack. $50 off from HP. Total of $322.39.

I bought and instaled 2 sticks of 512 meg Kingston PC2700 ValueRam at bestbuy for $99 each with a $35 MIR for each stick = $64 per stick. Total of $128.00 for RAM + $322.39 for system is $450.39.

I put in my old geforce fx 5900, and this system realy flies.

5211 on 3DMark03 with no tweaking at all.

Thanks for sharing this deal, it's just what I've been looking for, and I really appreciate it.

I thought about throwing in an extra Geforce 2 GTX board that I have lying around. Maybe I'll do that and see what the change in speed is. I am assuming that you just go into the BIOS and turn off the built in video card?

Hi,

I searched the bios for a way to disable the onboard video, but there was no need.
When you plug in your AGP card, the next boot disable the onboard and frees the RAM.
The bios has 2 options
1. PCI
2. AGP/Onboard
With an fx5900 installed, the bios automatically sets the option lebeled as PCI.

It works great.

BTW, I immediatly downloaded and installed the latest July nforce motherboard drivers and enabled nvidia's IDE driver. The latest sound driver NvMixer sounds fantastic!
It worked perfectly.
I also went to the compaq site and downloaded and installed the latest 3.03 bios.

super little system for a song.

I'm really liking this computer a lot but it has one quirk-the system on LED (really a bar of LEDs) is way too bright. Anyone know how to dim this?

Yeah, it is a little overbearing. Electrical tape, maybe?

Never thought I'd buy a computer at Radio Shack and never thought I'd buy a compaq ..oh well. It's actually a pretty nice system. Nforce2 with an open AGP slot. It had 1 256MB stick of Hynix pc2700 ram. I needed a gig (for my work), so Iwent to BestBuy and got 2 512MB sticks for $130 AR (89.99-25 rebate for Kbyte..I think they have a different deal today). Now I've got a 256MB stick just sitting around..

Anyway, it's actually quick to boot and feels anything but underpowered. Of course, you'd need to pop a card in the AGP slot if you want to game or something, but otherwise pretty nice. It also has front and rear firewire and USB2 (lots on the back, one on the front) and it's got one of the 7 in 1 memory card readers as well....

Overall, I'd have to say this was a great deal.

Any chance you could let me know if the case will take a standard ATX board?

I have no idea about the 400SC. The Compaq is quiet but not silent. It has the CPU fan, one case exhaust fan, and the PSU fan. It's definitely quieter than my own PC, but not silent.
