is this normal? my specs are:
3500+ .13 micron
1gig pc 3200
eVGA 6800gt (cant find the gainward anymore =[)
WD 10000rpm raptor 74 gig
msi nforce3 neo platinum 2
windows xp original (no service packs)

for FPS in HL2 on default settings i get 50-60 fps constant. 85 fps max, 45 fps lowest (so far)

for FPS in CS:S on default settings i get about the same as HL2: 50-60, 45 when lots of bodies come on screen.

for FPS in World of Warcraft on high settings i get avg 50 fps. 60 when nothing is moving and 30 in the most populated parts of cities.

these are the only 3 games i have loaded and i was quite dissapointed. i thought i'd be getting at least triple digits sometimes but i havent even come close to that. i have the latest drivers installed from eVGA.com. nothing is overclocked.

Something is holding you back, I regularly break 100FPS with my 3500+/6600GT setup. Might want to make sure your system is optimized, and your BIOS is configured correctly.

EDIT: This is at 1024x768, High Detail, 4xAA, 4xAF. If we're talking about higher resolutions, those scores seem about on the money.

What are your game settings? 1600x1200 Max details? AF/AA filters?

The City level slows down in a few isolated areas where it might throw off your averages.

I also dip below 40 FPS for a few brief seconds on a 6800GT and a AMD 2.4 GHz winchester.

66.93 drivers? Make sure your AV app was/is DISABLED during dnld and install of this driver. Is your 1T command rate in BIOS enabled? If not then enable it. Are you running with V-sync on? If so then turn off or set to application preference. 8x enabled on your AGP? If not then put it on in BIOS.

just to make sure, do some spyware\virus checks on your computer to make sure there isn't anything running in the background eating up your cpu time.

but for 1600x1200 that seems about right.

My World of Warcraft is being played at 1280x1000 (higest my LCD monitor can go). someone had suggested it was because i'm playing on an LCD at the refresh rate is too low? I didnt think that would effect the internal fps the game registers.

I just installed HL2 and CS:S so i havent had time to relaly look at the settings i'm playing those games on. I imagine they are default settlings (medium quality everything).

When i put together the system, i neglected to put a power supply into the evga card (since when do these cards need their own ps?!). well the system didnt boot up at first until i identified the problem. Its no possible that trying to boot the system up without a power cord connected to the 6800gt could screw the card up permanently?

I'm at work now, but i think when i go home i'll go buy 3dmark and see what i get. Any suggestions for a good free benchmarking tool? or is 3dmark the best out there?

I welcome all the responses of your similar rigs and FPS's however can u specify which game you are getting the fps's on? WoW or CS:S or HL2?

Thanks for the help guys.

Actually HL2 auto detects best optimal settings based on your hardware. So you are likely running everything at max. Which should be ok, since the 6800GT can handle whatever HL2 can dish out. Maybe you have vsync enabled?

I would also download CPU-Z. It would tell you all your settings and what not so you know the hardware is running as it should. Except maybe for the video card, but leaving the extra molex connector off of it should not hurt. If anything cause your computer to fail POST.

i certainly do hope it is because i have vsync enabled. wish i was home so i could check. you wouldnt happen to know if HL2 and CS:S turn on vsync as default would you? i have a funny feeling WoW was vsync enabled because i remember checking everything on. HL2 however has topped 60fps...went to about 85 standing still looking at a wall, so theoretically if vsync was on, it wouldnt be able to top 60 on my 60hz LCD.

I notice you said no service packs on XP. I would definately at least get SP1 on there. There are some fixes in SP1 and SP2 for video.

DOWNLOAD the free aquamark3 demo benchmark...
Good bench, better than 3dmark (two scores...cpu score / graphics card score)
I dont think u damaged your card by forgetting the power connector...

Your problem is most like somewhere in the bios...

Did you DISABLE "cool and quiet" in bios?
Is your AGP set to 8 x ?
Under CPU in bios > memory "2T DISABLED" ...cause it should be ,...or 1T ENABLED..same thing dont know your bios by heart lol...
Newest video card drivers installed?

download the free demo bench..(which is better than 3dmark i really think, only i doubt many people know it)
at http://www.aquamark3.com

many more tips, but check the above first...

hl2 is an intense game on any graphics card especially on high resolution with all settings. i have your same set-up except a 3200+ and get only a tad higher max settings on 1280x1024 so if your running at 1600x1200 that sounds on the money

yes thats definately not right, i would do some benchmarking with 3Dmark 2005 and see if you get about 5000, on HL2 u should be getting over 100 fps at 1280x1024

i was wondering about the windows XP with no service packs thing. i put it in my system specs because i thought it might make a difference. i have a copy of win xp the original version that i got some a shady shop. its obviously a copy and it worked great in like 2000 when it first came out so i've just kept using the thing. does the 2 new service packs that have released since then make a noticable difference in performance? i currently have winxp pro however i have access to a legit copy of winxp home. is there a difference between the perforamnce of the two for gaming purposes?

i dont think this is a primary problem but i'm thinking it might hinder performance a bit.

No, i dont think you will notice a performance increase...
To be honest, i think service pack 2 sucks bigtime..its basically one big firewall lol...

u tried the bios settings in my previous posts?

And for god's sake...download the demo bench "aquamark3" and run it...so you can at least get some idea where the problem lies...

cpu or vid.card...

Any resolution above 1024x768 in World of Warcraft will be capped at 30fps outdoors and 60fps indoors. I'm not sure why it does that, but it does. With my flat panel I'm using 1280x1024. That's when I first noticed my fps were being capped. I lowered my resolution to test it out and sure enough when I went back to 1024x768 my fps shot up over 60 without problem.

As for your other games, good luck.

I have a Athlon 64 3000 and a 6800gt and my fps runs around 80 for hl2 and counterstrike source. So I would check the vsync. I'm running all the settings on max.

I'm not too good with these sort of things, but I was playing Jedi Academy on my laptop one day, and it was going really fast at 1024x768 (not sure how many FPS). The next day, I tried playing it again, and it was really, really slow at 640x480. Then I remembered that I had turned up Smoothvision and Anisotropic filtering, OUTSIDE of the game settings. I just went to my desktop, right clicked, went to properties, clicked on the settings tab, clicked on advanced, and then turned the OpenGL and Direct 3d settings down from "Optimal Quality" to "Optimal Performance". I am not sure if it will help but you might want to check what it is set at.
