I'd go for an '06 WRX..all turbo impreza's now have 2.5l engines, and apparently the WRX is underrated so it doesn't steal sales from the STi.

You get a new car and almost the same amount of power for significantly less. Do a stage 1 upgrade for ~$1k and you'll definitely be hitting STi levels. Plus, you'll save a bunch of money on your car insurance.

And the 350Z is not?

I think a lot people have lost context on exactly what "ricer" is. Hint: if it actually goes fast, looks tasteful, and any questionable exterior modifications are actually there for performance (and not just for looks), then it ain't rice.

i don't think the WRX STi looks tasteful, even if its mods do serve a performance purpose. the 350z isn't a ricer by any means. i'm saying the WRX LOOKS like a ricer, but it DOES have the performance.

STi is fantastic, but it's still a 4 banger. The power will feel like a 4 banger in the end. It's also VERY loud in the cabin. I had to laugh when I was driving one, cuz I had to literally yell to the rear seat passengers for them to hear me. It's a very nice car, and VERY easy to drive. Possibly the easiest manual I've ever driven. Long drives = ruined body

The 350Z is probably sweet with it's 6 cylinder engine. Probably doesn't sound super loud in teh cabin either and probably doesnt ruin your body when you drive it.

Uh. You've never driven a Z then. The road noise and snarling engine while fun for a trip around the block, get numbingly obnoxious after more than a 20 minute drive. The ride is VERY abusive.

Stage 1 will not net you STi levels, Stage 3 maybe

Realistically, until the turbo spools up when you hit 3500+ RPM's...it *does* feel like a 4 banger.

The Z actually has some grunt down low and you don't need to wind it up to get full use of the power.

Actually Cobb Stage 2 gets very close to stock STi levels. That's not even a $1500 investment (excluding install if you can't turn a wrench).

quoted for truth.

A 4 is still a four and still feels like a four. No matter how much power it has.

Actually, the STi pulls very strong from a standstill. The power is very linear and it does not feel at all like a typical turbo'd 4 banger.

2.5l is a pretty decent size for a 4 banger anyway is it not? So should at least be a more powerful 4 prior to the turbo kicking in.

i own a 2005 350Z and i freakin LOVE the car. I get looks from all age groups, from kids saying "nice car!" to older people (60+) saying "oh my, what a beautiful car!" I love how it drives, i love it's responsiveness and i love how it looks.

if you're into power, mods, etc.. there's a company called turbonetics that makes a single turbo kit for the 350Z. most people who install it get 360-400whp and it has been very reliable so far. The aftermarket scene for the Z is still growing.

obviously, more people on this board prefer the sti... i was even considering one while i was shopping for cars, but i decided to get the Z because it puts down pretty good power, looks great, i think the vq35de is a good engine, and i have been a fan of Z cars and its heritage

to me an STi is more for younger people (i'm 22 btw).. i think anyone over 30 looks weird driving one.. just my opinion, though

if you have any more specific questions about the Z, just PM me

I agree, the STI seems to be more attractive to younger buyers, and is a little too ricey for me. Thats why I, like several others have mentioned so far, chose the LegacyGT. It has better performance than the stock WRX, has a more grown-up look to it and is a bit of a sleeper car, it's cheaper than the 350z or g35c (you can get it for dealer invoice), and also is easy to upgrade.

You should seriously consider it, maybe change the poll. And this is a good fan forum, and IMO fairly unbiased even though everyone owns a GT.

-edit- also they both drive significantly different. So I'd suggest you actually go and drive them and make up your own mind instead of an internet forum.
On that note, I'm 6'9", and I want an STi because of its AMPLE room for the driver. I can comfortably shift one, and that says a lot.

I want to see one in person.. but yes, I'd go mazdaspeed6 too just because I've been partial to some of mazda's offerings But I prefer it's styling over the Subarus.. hood scoop on the STI is what I really don't like as well.

I have owned a 350z, and they are wonderful and fun cars. The subaru will be more practical if you need that. Go drive both and pick.

According to Subaru, the average age of STi buyers is 39. It's only a boy ricer car if you live in an area affluent enough for parents to buy the car for their teenage sons (parents who have a secret desire to kill their sons IMO, that's too much car for a boy). Otherwise, its a $30k+ car -- a bit much for a college kid to afford on his own -- with a pretty steep insurance premium.

Personally, I see the issue the other way around. To me, the 350Z is for just-out-college-somethings and for men in their mid-life crises. I admit that 350Z is the more attractive car with its more conventional styling, but I fail to see how a 30-something would buy a car that doesn't at least hold 2 golf bags in the trunk (for those who don't get the reference, original 240Z marketing in 1970 advertised it as the practical sports car with a glove box that could hold 2 golf bags in the trunk -- not so the 350Z). How about 2 suitcases so that you and your lady can take a weekend trip to the coast? No place to put baby's car seat? See, when you're 30-something, you need a little practicality with your performance.
