This has been floating around for a couple of days with a couple of sites showing the larger memory chips that allow the Arcades to have a 512 mb internal memory unit over the previous 256mb internal memory unit. Now Eurogamer has confirmed the upgrade with MS.

Update: Microsoft has confirmed to Eurogamer that Xbox 360 Arcade models are now shipping with 512MB of onboard memory as standard.

"The Xbox 360 system software uses some of the included 512MB memory; less storage will be available to users. Additional storage (sold separately) may be needed for game saves, Xbox LIVE Arcade games, content downloads, personal file storage, and additional enhanced functionality. A hard drive is recommended for LIVE, and is required for some features," the company said in a statement. "We want to offer consumers a bit more memory at the same low price so they can enjoy more experiences on Xbox LIVE."

Original story: Eagle-eyed modders have uncovered what appears to be a Jasper-based Xbox 360 Arcade with 512MB of onboard flash memory rather than 256MB.

According to Xbox-Scene (thanks GameSpot), the previously 2Gbit NAND is replaced with a 4Gbit alternative on the Japanese model pictured there. (Gigabits are roughly equivalent to 125MB.)

Microsoft hasn't said what the extra memory is for, or whether it's standard on new Arcade models. The previous 256MB was introduced to allow for storage of files relevant to last November's New Xbox Experience upgrade.

Sounds like a case of the new chips that allowed for the 512mb internal memory unit got cheaper than the chips they were using before.

This is only in the arcade units? If so, what's the point of buying a Pro?

Just buy an Arcade, get a hard drive of your choice, get a headset, buy an HDMI cable, and you're good to go, all for cheaper than buying a Pro.

Why can't they just have one version of their silly console?

Yep. The Arcade is getting to be the console of choice because of the internal memory unit and nearly every Arcade sold now is a Jasper.

Why can't they just have one version of their silly console?

Desire to hit the $199.99 price point.

Does the internal memory integrate seamlessly with a HDD? What I mean is, if you start up a game and it asks you where to save, is it divided between Internal Memory and Hard Drive or does it just show up as Available Memory X GB?

Divides up. The internal memory unit shows up just like a memory card.

Guys, don't forget that with the standard Xbox 360 you get a chrome-esque CD tray door. On the Arcade the tray door is white.

Personally, I like the white better.

I wish they had stuck with memory cards instead of making it internal though. For someone who is buying a second 360 (like I did) the memory card is useful for moving your profile between consoles.

Well you can get both. I'm just glad they keep adding features for the same price.

You can get both, but then you have to pay Microsoft's ass-rape prices for the memory unit. Fortunately I got a really good deal on a 512 MB a while back, so I'm good.

What is the benefit of 512 MB internal? Did the old arcades not have any internal memory?

Old arcades came with a memory unit; more recent arcades come with 256 MB internal.

Combining would be a horrible idea. Think about it, if you save something to your HDD and it throws it on there for whatever reason, if you would go to take your HDD off to go somewhere, some of your stuff might be on that internal memory.

Actually, one potential method would be to mirror the memory card on your HDD - you take it someplace, but your stuff is still on the drive if you leave it there.

What would be _better_ is if Microsoft just copied all your save games to some central storage server, and they were just magically available where-ever you signed in. That'd be a nice gold benefit.

Until the day that Live is down for 24 hours for maintenance.

LoL I hadn't been on Live in a month and then I went online the other day (June 16th), and I couldn't connect to Live. I was like wtf, so I switched cables.. nothing, rebooted the router.. nothing, so I just played. Then I turned on the machine the next day and got a mail message. I checked it and it was from MS saying they were taking Live down for maintenance at 12:01am June 16th.. the only day I was on in a month.. I was like doh! It works fine now though.
