Other than contacting my ISP, I've tried all of that. I've entered manual static IP's and DNS settings, and while the IP I entered fixed the network connection, it wouldn't let me connect to the internet on my 360 because of DNS problems. Using the DNS address from my PC did not fix the problem. My 360 said something about MAC settings on my router, but I'm not using a router, so I just ignored that.

When you tried using your PCs DNS servers, what was the address? I ask because if your PC listed your router IP as the DNS and then you used that while having your router removed from the loop it is obviously not going to work. If you haven't already done so, you should put the router back in place and then try using your ISP's actual DNS servers (make sure your router IP is the gateway) and then if that fails try using your router's IP as the DNS server.

I don't have a router, just a simple hub.

Either way, I'm not sure they fixed it. I'm fairly positive it is a new 360, but I honestly never looked at the date when I got it back the first time. I don't think they fixed it because I had my friend bring his 360 over, and it connected just fine. My PS3 also has no problems at all. Only my 360 is having problems. At the moment he has mine and I have his because he currently isn't on Live, so he doesn't care that it doesn't work. But I think I'm gonna email MS and bitch and then send it in again. Guess I'll just be 360-less for another week and a half.

That might be part of your problem. Did you purchase extra ip's when you signed up?
Unsure if you powered off the modem for several minutes prior to connecting to the xbox directly, but if not you should try that. Sometimes this is necessary if your not using a router and you try connecting multiple devices to the modem at the same time.

Yeah, I unplugged it before I tried it. Still didn't work. I don't think I have extra IP's. Even so, I used a different 360 for 1.5 years without problem and this one for 6 months before it happened the first time. And my friend's works without issue, as does my PS3.

But, I mean, my friend's 360 worked no problem, so if this one is fixed, why doesn't it work? I just think MS did a shitty job fixing it. When I get mine back, I'll try it again just to be sure. But I bet I have to send it off again. Irritating as hell.

OMFG. Now his isn't working. Well, it connects, sits there for a minute and then disconnects. This is pissing me off.

What could be causing these problems all of a sudden?

Get a router. Allot of ISP's provide ip addresses based on either MAC addresses or account information (example ppoe). You could have gotten lucky prior as they may had a pool available to non-authorizied addresses but either ran out or locked this down. If you even attempt to call your ISP and inform them your using a hub you will get an ear full.
Hubs will not provide the functionality you need if you are not paying for multiple ip addresses from the ISP. As you mentioned it it did work, but I would consider yourself lucky and probably resulted from poor it management on the IT side that is now being resolved.

The guy that installed our DSL said a hub would work, but that we needed to get a router. It was like almost 4 years ago, but I guess it's time to get one, lol.

I'm not very knowledgeable on routers and stuff, but what is the difference between a switch and a router?

Hub/switch will treat all the connections as if they were on the same network. This includes the WAN port (ie internet connection). In this configuration each one of the machines on that switch will require a "public" address.

Router seperate (ie subnet) the networks between the wan and lan port side. This allows you to utilize one public address for multiple clients on your local network.

One of the benefits of having a router is that it adds an extra layer of protection for your local network. One of the minor cons as to utilize this benefit you will need to open specific ports to specific clients if you want to share resources to the internet. You do not need to open these ports to access remote resources.

Conifguration of ports only comes into play for pc's mostly as xbox and ps3 should not require any special configuration. Example a reason you would need to open a port is if you host a web server or host games on your pc that you want accesible to people on the internet.

Many of the newer routers have came along way from a few years ago and they have some nice user configuration wizards. Just stick with a name brand (example linksys and dlink are good) and look at reviews. Something in the $20-50 should be fine.

Thanks man. I ordered a Dlink router. Hopefully it fixes it. The only thing I'm worried about is the fact that this 360 will connect, while mine would not. After reconnecting about 5 times yesterday, it finally stayed connected for about and hour and a half before I turned it off. The last time I tried mine Friday, it wouldn't connect at all.

Maybe it was just a fluke. Hell, maybe a router will fix the problem, but maybe my 360 is still actually broke. :/

It's fairly common with cabling installed by the user or not installed by competent people to fry active equipment during storms, like a NIC. Regardless if it's an xbox or not, it happens all the time.

That was the first thing I tried. I swapped cables with my PC, and it still worked fine while my 360 still wouldn't connect.

Also, all day Sunday, I had no problems connecting with my friend's 360. I'm gonna get mine back either today or tomorrow and see if it will work at all. If not, I'm gonna wait and get the router set up and see if that fixes it. If not, it's going back to MS for a third time.

Not to threadjack, but how long do repairs usually take at Microsoft? Do you get the same unit back, or just another repaired unit? My third Xbox died last night (grrrr) and I shipped it back today. They are quoting 2-3 weeks, which I hope is accurate. I had the Best Buy replacement plan before, but it has expired so this is my first time through Microsoft.

It always says 2-3 weeks. Both times I've sent it in, it took 9 days. I live in southern Tennessee and it ships to Mesquite, Texas, so it doesn't have to go too far.

As far as I know, I got a different one back the first time, and then the same one the second time.

Cool, thanks for the info. I do like that you're allowed to keep your hard drive, which certainly makes it easier than the Best Buy replacement plan.
