Save yourself $150 and go to Staples, look at a Audiovox Maestro unit, turn it over, and look at the Toshiba logo on the back. Great deal, ~ $220 to $290 - YMMV.

That's not the same unit. The Maestro is a rebadged e570. This e310 is about an ounce lighter and almost half as thick.

Didn't say it was - but besides one ounce, it's better than $100 less expensive as well.

not necessarily. the extra 100 is worth it to some people, and not even a concern to others.

lnguyen has a good point. There are thousands of capable 2 meg digicams out there, but you buy the Canon S200 for other reasons.

The new 310 is far nastier then the older maestro.. besides the weight and thinness advantages, the 310 actually has a batter that lasts more then an hour and a half...
Gorgeous pda.. its the first palm killer...

One warning: no CF slot means you can't add a CF netcard (wired or wireless) so it's not good for software development or wireless web browsing.

Thread crapping? You have some way of thinking - based on what was posted - a 32Mb PDA from Toshiba, then there's nothing wrong with the Maestro. The 310 is nice, for those that can drop the price of a 1.6GHz Pentium 4 system for a PDA that you can't put a CF into. Each for their own, but don't dare say I'm crapping on anyone's thread - unless you want to make this into USSR 1984.

Lets see. You're making incoherent posts on a product that you havent even seen or done any research on. And you're comparing it to a totally unrelated product because of the price. Yep. I'd say that you're thread crapping now.

Maybe you'll understand if we trying explaining it AGAIN. In the portable electronics world, you pay a premium price for brand new and ultra-light products. The e310 is a brand new and ultra-light product and thats why it costs $100 more than the Maestro's CLEARANCE price. Yes, it doesnt have CF but it does have a better battery, bigger better screen, jog dial and weighs much less. So $365.35 is a great price for people who want this thing. Anyway, dont try responding to threads you dont agree with by comparing it to items that are totally unrelated. It makes you look foolish.
(...a 1.6ghz Pentium 4 system.... WOOOOSH! Right over his head...

Damn. If he'd gone for Nazis instead of Soviets we could have invoked GODWIN'S LAW and locked the thread. Where's your sense of Internet forum history, man??

<< brand new and ultra-light >>

Uh huh - so you're going to run out an buy a device that even the reviewer called that features "Battery life is mediocre" and "
Screen needs more contrast (or at least a contrast control)" just because it's new?

Let me see - the size is a big deal:
Device (no cover) Size (inches) Weight (grams | ounces)
Toshiba e310 4.90" x 3.10" x 0.40" 138 | 4.90
Toshiba e570 Series 4.90" x 3.00" x 0.70" 181 | 6.40

WOW! The new model is 0.1" wider and 0.30" thinner according to the article. I have to trust the article because I didn't bother to measure the 570/Maestro I bought.

And not to mention it is 43 grams lighter - wow! To think, if I was carrying my keys, I would not notice it.

<< bigger better screen >>

So - it IS lighter, and it IS smaller (and slower), but with better graphics perfomance - but not a bigger screen, it's still the same 3.5" size as before.

So, yep, you got me - oh, I'm hurtin'!!!

Its nice you decided to respond with intelligence this time.
Calm down, Maestro owners and e310 owners arent in a war you know.

Im not saying I'd buy it. Personally, I think its ugly and without CF then it serves no purpose for ME. But thats no reason to push my personal needs on the needs of others. This may be perfect for someone else so why crap on it.

And you obviously havent read many reviews before if you are going to take that guys opinion and state it as fact. You really shouldnt be so critical on things just from reading the spec sheets or a review on it. You have to view it up close and actually hold it incomparison to other products to see how light it is, how the screen compares and how functional it is.

You seriously should learn how to participate in threads a bit better. This is a hot deal forum so just because it isnt hot to you doesnt mean you should bash the product in favor of your product choice. Take a look at your posts. Why is there so much anger toward a product that you havent even seen in person yet? Its no big deal if you dont like it, but just dont badmouth it until you actually have a reason to be upset with it.

Okay - so I probably shouldn't take YOUR word on it either.

Unless I am mistaken, he measured the screens, so unless "Opinion Co." makes rulers, it's a fact.

And as far as functional goes - that is my whole point - it doesn't on balance do a whole lot more than the previous model, it's just smaller (um, and wider).

I can show you pictures of a clever phone from Nokia with a colour display, drop down keypad, and built in camera - it's got the works, and it's a phone too. Lots of functionality, more than a weight watcher version of an old product, a la Toshiba.

I'm not bashing, I'm calling attention to your inaccurate hyperbole - and I am sure you said "bigger and better" simly because to you it is "bigger and better" - but I want more than just seeing a minor update to a product.

All over I hear more and more people complain that Anandtech has such an aggressive culture that features commentary like "STFU" and such, but I came here in spite of that because you often see here some of the best and brightest tossing it back and forth.

Think about going from a 21" Mitsubishi CRT monitor to a big LCD display with DVI - wow. Bright display, great images, clarity.

Now, think about a PDA that is, oh, half the thickness of the e310 - with a 4.25" display, built in wireless and a pair of memory card sockets, 256Mb RAM, 64Mb Flash, and a roll out (not pull out, roll out) keyboard. That is a wow - and also not happening for $399 anytime this season.

And anger??? Whoooooooa! If anything, I fought my disinterest only due to the fact that I bought a Maestro, and I don't think it's much to talk about in itself.

As far as a hot deal goes, LIST is $399, so if the best that you folks can do is less than 10% off, plus the cost of shipping, something is seriously cool.

I'm not belittling here - great, go grab 'em, buy all you can - but the price/performance thing is just not there.

Well obviously MSN doesn't see a benefit for this newer, slimmer handheld, so it must not benefit anyone else either!

Didn't say there was no benefit - I am sure people who are struggling with the big six-ouncers will will more than welcome it.

Seriously, just as for some people, saving the 41 grams is important, or having the newest model is important, it is equally okay for it to be important for some people to save 45% of the price for something that does the same job, isn't it?

Gee - I say one thing that does not toe "the party line" here and people think they are being personally attacked!

Can't we all just get along?

OH, and love your sig - moron.
