the 3930k will be twice the 3770k.

if both cpu overclock to 4.0ghz. 3930k will out perform the 3770k?

i read other forums, the only advantage the 3770k have over 3930k is the overclock potential. is that it? and how 3770k and 3930k compare?

IGNORE THE PRICE. (don't give me like ah well 3770k cheaper so better or anything along those lines)

eh?

3930k will be faster in multithreaded loads. Its a workstation CPU, not entry level. It has more cache on board.

apples to cars...2 different platforms, one is mainstream and the other is server.

I would get the 3770k and I can almost bet you that you will get around 4.8ghz on good air cooling and it will be fine for everything most people need.

in single threaded it will beat out the 3930k by about 5-10% and have less latency on the memory, but the 3930 with the 2 extra cores will beat it in anything that scales with more threads.

how can price not matter? the cost of just the 3930k could get you a 300 dollar high end 1155 mother board and the 3770k chip along with it.

if you got a cheaper MB you can almost get the case and ram along with it for just the price of the 2011 cpu and in single threaded performance it would win.

so the 3930k will outperform 3770k in all aspect except ocing?
Core i7 3770K should have better ST performance and Core i7 3930K will have slightly weaker ST performance but when it comes to MT tasks that could take advantage of 6 or more cores, the Core i7 3930K is the winner.

It is very difficult to ignore the price as they were not meant for the same market in the first place. Core i7 3770K is mainstream users, Core i7 3930K is for enthusiasts and server space. Don't get based on the fact that one is superior to another in certain tests. Look at what you're using it for, does it benefit you with the extra cores? If not, the lower core count will suffice.

Another words, ignore the numbers because they don't make very much sense at this point.

2xxx series Sandybridge
3xxx series Sandybridge-E
3xxx series Ivybridge

Comparing SB-E to IVB is comparing a boat with an airplane. But I can see why the model number makes it confusing for others that don't follow technology as much.

Sounds like your asking people for permission to burn money on stuff you don't need. Its your money burn away. If I was talking to someone sensible I would say cost is always a factor because money saved can always be used for something else. Unless someone is using their computer for work where time = money the added expensive of a six core cpu that is slower per core, uses more power and doesn't overclock as high doesn't make much sense to me.

I think one thing is we will really just have to wait and see how these IVB processors compare to the SBE processors.

One thing that is certain is that it will be pretty beast none the less and it won't make a big difference between the two if you're only going to play games

Money being no object, go with the 3930K. Although, if that were really true you'd be looking at the 3960x. So, yeah... get the 3770K when it comes out.

just saying.
- ib could be a wait and see
if ib needs a 2nd retail stepping like ,the 39xx and the 920-C0's could be a long wait for those who want to upgrade this spring.

so basically 3770 > 3930 except for multi threading in every aspect?

The 3930 also has more cache, which can help in some (very limited) loads.

But generally, the CPU cores in 3770 are better, but 3930 has more of them. Which is better for you very much depends on the programs you are going to run -- for example, more cores will most likely win at video encoding, while faster cores will most likely win at gaming.

What exactly will you be doing with the machine?

I think its funny how intel can sell failed xeons and make a platform for these cpus, sandy e didnt need a second stepping, all these chips ar failed 8 core xeons that were supposed to go into the 1567 platform.

But intel is like hey,why dont we make a mid server platform and sell these failed cpus as 6 core ones and make some crazzy money doing it lol.

to the op....please get a mainstream cpu If you needed to make a thread about this, you DONT need a sandy E setup.

If you are looking purely at CPU performance, it's still speculation, but IB will have faster per core performance (5-10%) so ST will be better on the 3770k, but the 3930k will be better in MT at the same clock speed. This ignores cache differences.

You are ignoring the main reason to go 3930k which is the X79 platform = 8 DIMM slots, 40 PCI-e lanes etc. Those are the real advantages it has ove the Z77 platform.

I just bought a i5 2500K! Is it out of date already? I've only had for a week!

Yes, now that a new chip with 5% more performance is just about out, your old clunker is clearly worthless.

Just be sure you dispose of it properly. PM me and I will send you an address that will dispose of your boat-anchor 2500K system for free!
