NBCNEWS: CACHE OF EXPLOSIVES VANISHED FROM SITE IN IRAQ BEFORE TROOPS ARRIVED...

The NYTIMES urgently reported on Monday in an apprent October Surprise: The Iraqi interim government and the U.N. nuclear agency have warned the United States that nearly 380 tons of powerful conventional explosives are now missing from one of Iraq's most sensitive former military installations.

[The source behind the NYT story first went to CBSNEWS' 60 MINUTES last Wednesday, but the beleaguered network wasn't able to get the piece on the air as fast as the newspaper could print. Executive producer Jeff Fager hoped to break the story during a high-impact election eve broadcast of 60 MINS on October 31.]

Jumping on the TIMES exclusive, Dem presidential candidate John Kerry blasted the Bush administration for its failure to "guard those stockpiles."

"This is one of the great blunders of Iraq, one of the great blunders of this administration," Kerry said.

In an election week rush:

**ABCNEWS Mentioned The Iraq Explosives Depot At Least 4 Times
**CBSNEWS Mentioned The Iraq Explosives Depot At Least 7 Times
**MSNBC Mentioned The Iraq Explosives Depot At Least 37 Times
**CNN Mentioned The Iraq Explosives Depot At Least 50 Times

But tonight, NBCNEWS reported: The 380 tons of powerful conventional explosives were already missing back in April 10, 2003 -- when U.S. troops arrived at the installation south of Baghdad!

An NBCNEWS crew embedded with troops moved in to secure the Al-Qaqaa weapons facility on April 10, 2003, one day after the liberation of Iraq.

According to NBCNEWS, the HMX and RDX explosives were already missing when the American troops arrived.

"The U.S. Army was at the site one day after the liberation and the weapons were already gone," a top Republican blasted from Washington late Monday.

The International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors last saw the explosives in January 2003 when they took an inventory and placed fresh seals on the bunkers.

Dem vp hopeful John Edwards blasted Bush for not securing the explosives: "It is reckless and irresponsible to fail to protect and safeguard one of the largest weapons sites in the country. And by either ignoring these mistakes or being clueless about them, George Bush has failed. He has failed as our commander in chief; he has failed as president."

A senior Bush official e-mailed DRUDGE late Monday: "Let me get this straight, are Mr. Kerry and Mr. Edwards now saying we did not go into Iraq soon enough? We should have invaded and liberated Iraq sooner?"

Top Kerry adviser Joe Lockhart fired back Monday night: "In a shameless attempt to cover up its failure to secure 380 tons of highly explosive material in Iraq, the White House is desperately flailing in an effort to escape blame. Instead of distorting John Kerry?s words, the Bush campaign is now falsely and deliberately twisting the reports of journalists. It is the latest pathetic excuse from an administration that never admits a mistake, no matter how disastrous."

Why is the U.N. nuclear agency suddenly warning now that insurgents in Iraq may have obtained nearly 400 tons of missing explosives -- in early 2003?

NBCNEWS Jim Miklaszewski quoted one official: "Recent disagreements between the administration and the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency makes this announcement appear highly political."

It deserves it's own thread due to the fact that so much BS was posted in the other thread that turns out to be so untrue.

I wonder if we will hear an apology or if the Media will gloss over it.

BottomCrawler, don't you think it would have been a little more stylish, not to mention credible, to link to and NBC or other reliable source. Drudge is fast but doesn't hold the world record for accuracy.

No it's the Left that is grasping at straws by reporting stories they don't bother to verify in a desperate measure to get elected.

So much for fair and balanced.

The report is from NBC not Drudge, it is being reported on other news sites like CNN.

Drudge always list the source, I believe it is vaild enough for most NeoLibs and NeoCons alike but who knows, some may not trust NBC either.

Answer:

Media will gloss over it.

I read here earlier that a new member of the forums said he was now voting Kerry because of this story about the missing explosives. He was a avid Bush supporter through and through but the missing explosives was the last straw to him.

Wonder if he's now going to vote Bush as this new turns out to be untrue .... hmmmm ...

This must be the October suprise... well played Mr. Rove.

I feel better now we don't have to blame the president for this.

Still, I'd like to know what happen to the explosives.

I head this on the radio this morning and then read it on Drudge Report. Wow! Just amazing and pathetic. These media companies and Kerry&friends need to admit how they distorted the story and apologize. Also shame on the IAE for being partisan and playing games.

I disagree, there are despicable people on both sides who will do everything they can to stay in power.

You're 1/2 blind if you don't see it.

This is causing prevalent cynicism everywhere. I don't have a solution. Perhaps this is the only way one side can fight another?

Yet another liberal ploy to deceive the public. As mentioned earlier, this has already had a devistating effect on the election, and I would bet that Kerry is laughing is butt off right now.

For years, the al Qa Qaa site has raised the suspicions of weapons inspectors who believed the facilities could be converted for the production of missiles and chemical and nuclear weapons. It was visited repeatedly during the 1990s and during the last cycle of inspections -- between Nov. 27 and March 17 -- when U.N. experts went to the complex more than 10 times.

Closer to Baghdad, troops at Iraq's largest military industrial complex found nerve agent antidotes, documents describing chemical warfare and a white powder that appeared to be used for explosives.

UN weapons inspectors went repeatedly to the vast al Qa Qaa complex, most recently on March 8. But they found nothing during spot visits to some of the 1,100 buildings at the site 40 kilometres south of Baghdad.

Col. John Peabody, engineer brigade commander of the 3rd Infantry Division, said troops found thousands of five-centimetre by 12-centimetre boxes, each containing three vials of white powder, together with documents written in Arabic that dealt with how to engage in chemical warfare.

A senior U.S. official familiar with initial testing said the powder was believed to be explosives. The finding would be consistent with the plant's stated production capabilities in the field of basic raw materials for explosives and propellants.

According to UN weapons inspectors, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the Iraqis filled warheads and artillery shells with explosives at the site and manufactured bomb casings there. The activities, for conventional weaponry, were allowed under UN resolutions. But the resolutions, passed after the 1991 Gulf War, ban Iraq from possessing chemical, biological and nuclear weapons and the long-range missiles to deliver them.

Peabody told an Associated Press reporter that troops at al Qa Qaa also discovered atropine, used to counter the effects of nerve agents, and 2-Pam chloride, which is used in combination with atropine in case of chemical attack.

well, considering the Media is not one giant company, i doubt either one of those things will happen.

Yes, the U.S. military was at AlQaKaa promptly and found only a cache of regular explosives, Conjur. Thanks for the extra confirmation of the NBC story.

The real point here should be about the NY Times. Again.

There was readily available info that conflicted with the NYT's alarming headline and story. They chose to ignore it in an attempt to influence this election.

The whole story should have been reported, so everyone could make a reasonable judgement. Instead we get a biased mishmash that causes the Bush admin to scramble around trying to explain something that may not even be real, let alone need to be explained, and we have Kerry/Edwards running for the goal line without the football, making them both look foolish.

Will the NYT take a lesson from this experience the next time they decide they will support a candidate? Probably not. You'd think everyone would be on their toes when investigating a "scoop" after the CBS fiasco. Nope. Memories are way too short when the media sees a chance to help their candidate.

How many semi trucks would it take to move that much explosives, considering that they're moving explosives over rough roads?

How many pickups would it take to move 380 tons?

How many men/machines to load?

Where would you hide 380 tons of explosives?

WTF was the UN doing allowing Saddam to keep these horrible, horrible WMD? I thought the sanctions/inspections were working...
