Hey,

I recentley bought an AMD 3800+X2 to replace my 3700+ sandiego because of the monster price cuts. My question is that, since this is my first time with a dual core i dont know the temp range for this chip on stock settings. I need to know this because i either need to reset my HS or i'll need to increase my cooling somehow. My idle is 33-35 and my loads range from 42-45 depedning if im loading both cores. I would like to OC this chip, but with these temps i dont have much headroom.

One more question, my motherboard supports dual cores(recongnized it an such), but i havent updated the bios since i got my Asus A8N Sli delxue back in January. Should i update the bios because i have experienced a random lockup and a complete shut down of my computer while running dual prime(just to stress my new procc out on stock speeds). I woke up and my computer was off, i checked my temps and they never rose above 46.

I most concur the last post but make sure you follow the stability sticky. Besides the bios issue, you'd need to download and install all the latest dual core drivers and optimizer from AMD.

I did a fresh install, loaded the AMD drivers, did the hot fix(followed XS forum guide), and loaded Dual core Optimizer. I am going to re-seat my heatsink today just to see. I went into my Bios to check some stuff out, and since i reset it because i had it all set for my 3700+(which was oced), i rechecked my ram stuff and it had it at 3-4-4-7, when it is supposed to be 3-4-4-8, i also bumbed the voltages for the ram. I heard around that maybe X2 need more voltage for the ram, i dunno its better than auto.

Good point! You did reload Windows, after installing the X2, didn't you? Also, make sure you first load the AMD X2 driver, then you can try the Microsoft HotFix, if you have SP2 loaded.

Why must he reinstall Windows when going dual core? I went from a 3200 @ 2.5ghz to a 3800X2 @ 2.65Ghz without any problems on the same installation.

That's right! There is absolutely no need to reload window unless you experience issue. Mine is x64 O/S that keeps on plugging along just fine even after the x2 upgrade. I'm very happy with both x2 & x64 combo together. It's not only great for gaming but for my video/audio works as well.
EDITED: Are you using stock HSF? If you o/c then need to raise Dram V to at least 2.79v, then run Memtest86 (test #5 I believe) for statbility

I would definitely update your BIOS, although, if you did it in January, that BIOS should support X2's. What power supply are you using? That would be my guess, as to what's causing your problems.

edit: Also, with a TR 120, you can go up to around 2.8 Ghz, at least. 46*C with both cores loaded is quite good.
edit #2: Since you're using an Antec 550, you should be alright, but check your voltages, anyway. This works well: SpeedFan 4.29, and it gives you both temps, and voltages.

I don't know, myocardia - you definitely know more about this stuff than me, but I think saying he should be able to hit at least 2.8 GHz (implying stable) is kind of gutsy - especially for a 939.... He does have a good setup, though.

EDIT: Let us know how it turns out, Heligrin.
