3800rpm Seagate louder than 7200rpm Quantum???

I have both in my drive right now! I notice how much louder it is with the Seagate in it!.. I've been using the computer for a while, and the Seagate fell asleep (it is D:, and I hadn't accessed it in a long time). For some reason it just woke up, and man, it makes alot more noise than my 7200 Quantum! And it is 3800rpm! This makes no sense!

Are you sure it's 3800? Not 5400? Are you talking SCSI or IDE?

I just bought 2 used Segate 2.0 GB SCSI 7200 RPM drives. They sound like a jet engine taking off. Is this just a characteristic of segate drives? What SCSI drives are recomened for lower volume? I am going to be forced to sell these because you can hear them from any place in my house!!! Somone please recomend a QUIET 7200 RPM SCSI drive for me! Thanks!!! -Andy

If the drive is truly a 3800rpm drive, than it has to be quite old. There have been big improvements in noise reduction since then, so the drive should be louder than the newer quantum.

Stuck, your drives are quite old as well. The first few generations of 7200RPM scsi drives are quite noisy. All current gen drive are quiet.

It seems my old 2gb Maxtor (don't know rpm buy I'm guessing around 3500rpm was noiser than my WD Expert 7200rpm (both IDE). I remember on my old computer how loud that hard drive was trying to load things. The WD 7200rpm seems quieter!

Why do you guys think I am unsure of myself here? I am completely sure, it's 3800rpm. I have two seagate drives that are 3800 actually.

Each drive I am talking about is IDE. I have a 261.3MB and 428.1MB Seagate Medalist, 3800rpm for both, and 7200rpm for my new 20.5GB Quantum.

Yes, they are old. And man, they are noisier... my Quantum is less noisy, but when it's working it sort of sounds like a coffee machine

My 17GB 5400RPM and my 40GB 7200RPM are evenly matched in terms of noise volume, the 7200 has a more tolerable sound though. My 8GB 5200RPM drive is louder than either of them, and my 200MB Hard Drive for a 486 is loudest of all. Newer drives make all kinds of advancements including noise reduction. An example is a modern 5400RPM drive could probably trash an early 7200RPM drive in performance.

I have noticed that 7200RPM drives are the quietest I have ever seen. I have used both IBM and Maxtor and they are far quieter than any 5400RPM I have used.

Obviously technology improves with time. A HD old enough to be 3800rpm )) can't compare to the newer drives.

Also, SCSI drives are usually louder than IDE drives. I'm not sure why, but besides the fact that they're always one speed grade ahead of IDE (now two--they're up to 15,000rpm), it probably has to do with the fact that they're manufactured to be more reliable than IDE drives. And SCSI isn't really needed for most personal computing, it's meant for the server room.

my 13 GB 5400 rpm Maxtor (not sure what model) is a lot louder than my 30 GB Maxtor DM40+ (7200 rpm), my old Quantum LPS210 sounds like a machinegun going at full speed

My old 18 GB Western Digital 7200 rpm IDE was really loud. My Quantum Atlas 10K was even louder but my new Cheetah 18XL is so quiet I can't even tell if it is doing anything

My current drive (WD 3.1GB 5400) is much louder than the one I'm about to get (WD 20GB 7200), at least in seek noise. I mean this one sounds like (for the lack of a better simile) really loud-seeking drive

Is there such a thing as a quiet SCSI drive? I have an X15 and 2 Atlas 10k's loud, but in gmae sounds or MP3's drown it...as do my fans...only time I really hear anything is during seeks...but during games they rarely seek, and I run my MP3's off of a P200 serving ICS and files
