380W enough for system?

I'm building a system for a friend (he's good with OS stuffs, not hardware) and I was wondering if the bundled 380W PSU that comes with the Antec Sonata is good enough for:
Athlon 64 3400+, Socket 754, 512K
MSI K8N neo platinum, K8T800
1x40GB Maxtor
1x120GB Seagate "barracuda"
Geforce 6800 Ultra
1024MB OCZ RAM
1xCDRW, 48X
1xDVDRW, dual layer, Pioneer
Stock cooling from sonata

No overclocking, just standard gaming.

Nvidia recommends atleast a 480W PSU. Of course thats for crappy PSU's. The sonata comes with a very reliable/stable Antec TruePower 380W. It should do the job fine. BTW if your friend is spending so much for a new rig why not go with a Nforce 2 250GB board and an Antec Truepower 550W (to be future proof)? It has pci/agp lock, firewall built on the chip, and on chip gigabit lan.

I dont think it will be enough. I recently put together a similarly configured Athlon XP 3200+ system with a geforce 6800 GT and was having all sorts of problems in windows and while playing games. We replaced the 380 watt Antec True Power with a 480 watt Antec True power and everythign worked fine.

Antec Performance Plus has a 430w with it. It seems to be a nice cool case, but a duller color than the sonata. Wonder if 430w would be big enough?

I just put the Antec true 550 in my new system. It's not THAT much more, and you know you will have plenty of power to spare. If I ever question getting something higher end and I don't, I will kick myself until I buy it. So if you are considering it, and like me at all, just get a bigger PSU.

nVidia DOES NOT suggest a 480W for the 6800GT. They have changed their minds and suggested a 350W. Anyway, a 350W Antec PS will be fine.

you might be able to get away with it, but if your building a system that you are hoping will last a decent ammount of time you might as well spend a few extra dollars for a deceent PSU. Try looking at some cases that dont come with bundled ones. The ultra requires two molex connections, perferably on two separate lines so you should also consider the avaliable connections that the PSU has.

Feep, you area aware that he is talking about an ANTEC sonata case, right? Antec makes some of the best PSUs out there. There is nothing wrong with the one that is bundled w/ that case.

KillaKilla, dont worry about that PSU. Antecs are great, you'll be fine. There is entirly too much PSU hype these days.

Seconded. In my P160 + TP380, I have:

Athlon 64 2800+ @ 1.9ghz
Abit KV8
1GB Geil Value RAM PC3200
4 hard drives; 3x120, 1x200
ATI X800 Pro @ 520/1080
Happuage PVR-250
SB Audigy Gamer
12x DVD-ROM
48x CD burner

It handles all of this without a hitch.

My True power 430w couldn't handle my upgrade from a 9700 pro to a BFG 6800 GT. I had to unplug 2 ide hard drives before I was stable again. There just wasn't enough amps on the 12 volt rail. The enermax 550w that I picked up does the job though.

Then obviously there is something wrong with your PSU. Why the hell would you need a 550W Antec PSU. with a system like that. Unless you are SLiing to Ultras together there is no need for it right now except for futureproofness or braggin rights (or unless you have a whole sh!tload of HDD and Optical drives). That 380Watt will be plenty for it. Dont upgrade.

Possibly, I just put together a system with a x800xt, AMD 64 3200, and 2 Raptors and its really hurting my 12v rail. The best this out there right now in the NeoPower from Antec which has 2 12v rails, which is AWESOME. more power for everything. I had to upgrade from a Thermaltake Truepower 420 to the Antec cause I was hitting 11.00v

I've got a 550Watt Thermaltake. The only things plugged in to my PS are the MB, GPU, CPU H/S Fan, HD, CD & DVD Drive, and Floppy. All case fans had to be unplugged. It wasn't completely stable until I did this... Get the largest PS you can find would be my advice.

No, it's not. There's nothing wrong with the 430watt of mine, trust me, I checked, and it was well within specs. Granted, I didn't need to go with 550w now, but it gives me room for upgrading next year.

Nvidea says you need 480watts for an ultra. Getting anything less is just asking for trouble.
