With the release of ATI's and Nvidia's next GPU's knocking on our door, and from a historical perspective, we have decided to be a bit more proactive on this topic.

All must adhere to the forum rules/guidelines when posting.
This as you know includes ZERO personal attacks. You can discuss the hardware, but do not discuss the poster or what you think of them for having opinions.

The forum rules/guidelines should be followed at all times. Not just for this launch. But we thought it appropriate to "bolster" this fact due to the launch.

It is understandable that it is exciting when new hardware comes out, but that doesn't give license to be disrespectful to fellow members.

So, lets make this topic enjoyable to discuss.

Thanks in advance.

Well it certainly looks like quite a race for the midrange coming up. Not quite sure about highend, it being so little ahead of midrange at this point. Still those that want the fastest, often don't care about degrees, as long as they win.

So one could assume that many who were very excited about sm 3.0 will say they learned their lesson, new features generally remain unused for a couple of years.

And many of those who thought sm 3.0 was not an important feature will say dx10.1 is a nice feature to have and since it is basically free, why not take it.

And the flip flops on heat and power use are too confusing to even bother with.

(So my conspiracy theory is many users here are brand loyal fans or worse yet - work for a the company they support).

well, I must admit that I've wanted to remain brand-loyal to daamit, but they've made it tough for the past year. However, I will probably still get a 3870 instead of 8800gt for 2 reasons: 1. p35 is xfire enabled and the x4 slot shouldn't be too crippled with a 3870. 2. dual slot cooler is very important for me b/c of antec 900 and hx520 designs (need air exhausted out of case to prevent throwing hot gpu air directly into hx520 intake). Opening up xfire to intel mobos was a good move by ati imho. I hope that amd keeps this going for the long term.

yeah oka..but...

1) Nvidia warranties 12047190238012938% better...no 1 year BS like ATI...warranties are very very important....
2) Most games...if not most of the best games are based off and made for Nvidia

what do either of those things have to do with what I wrote?

Now that we have that out of the way, all me to respond. is the 12047190238012938% better based upon your personal observations of having numerous nvidia and ati cards fail after a year or two, or is that just what you've heard from other people? how many people buy high end cards and keep them more than 2 yrs anyway? If you need upper main/high end today then you'll need it in a couple of years. BTW, not all ati-based cards are only 1 yr warranty, anyway. 2. TWIMTBP is probably what you meant, right? Funny, many TWIMTBP games of the past and present do better with daamit cards. Could that be...gasp...a marketing gimmick? naw...

If you just posted what all of us are thinking, namely "Why the hell would you buy a slower amd card vs the 8800gt" then I could understand, but you instead tried to marginalize my position without doing your homework first. It's ok, you can tell us, are you a graphics editor at thg ?

So all the advertisement and "The way it's meant to be played" crap when you launched your game makes it true, right?

hmmm... my last card was an ati x800xl...at the time it was the best bang for buck...however, for ME...i have just over the years started to move toward Nvidia. the x800xl died after 1.5 years....it cost me $250? or so at the time..adn that all went down the drain..thanks ati....now I am using a $20 gfx card...There are only 1 or 2 companies for ATI that provide lifetime warranties - but are no where are good as Nvidia's warranties/support. As for the games....in my opinion, the most popular games these days usually run better for nvidia from the benches I have seen. Also, for me...when i buy a video card I use it for a good 4-5 years.

PS: You seriously buy a new graphic card within 2 years max? sheesh...

of course not. but it means the game will work better for nvidia cards vs the same kidna of ati card...

ever see Half-life benchmarks for ATI cards compared to superior nvidia cards? there is some truth in it.

You bought your card knowing your card only had 1 year warranty so why cry about it? There are Nvidia cards with only 1 year warranty as well. If warranty was that important you should have bought the ATI card with 3 year warranty.

No it doesn't mean the game will work better for Nvidia. It just means Nvidia paid them to advertise in their games. Marketing at it's finest. You actually believed what the advertisement told you.

After 1.5 years, usually you can get a better card for half the price. Warranties are hardly worth the shipping cost after that time.

Yes, I know thats is what i meant in regard to ATI endorsing Half-life. But why is it that ATI cards always seem to do better on Half-life vs other test performed? I don't know..maybe its just me...but it always seems like ATI cards closes the gap vs Nvidia cards when it comes ot Half-life....for instance...if nvidia is scoring 15% better on all tests...expect for on half-life were nvidia only does 7% better...idk maybe its just me...but that kinda of theme seems to show up a lot

That's not true. Last time I checked 8800gtx is faster than 2900xt in half life episode 2. Some games tend to favor ATI or Nvidia cards because of architecture not because of endorsements.

ATI cards performance with Unreal 3 or bioshock is great. 2900xt surpassing 8800gts it's direct competing card but it's endorsed by Nvidia "it's meant to be played".

AZN:
Does AMD cards do AA in Unreal Tournament 3 and/or Bioshock yet? All test that I can find indicates no AA for AMD. 8800 GTS doesn't get big performance hit while using AA. Like 1650x1080 + 8xAA 16xAF everything as high as it goes in beta demo..totally playable with 8800 GTS.

Side Note: I wasnt implying the endorsements were causing certain games to run better for ATI or nvidia but rather the development team used that companies cards to build/optimize the game on....but that was more of a guess than anything. Regardless, endorsement of course isn't going to determine which games run on which card better.

3 years ago was I AMD/ATI fan...today I am Nvidia/Intel...for whatever personal reasons/experiences.
