The gtx1060 is as fast or faster than a 390x but uses about half the power.

Amazing you are calling me out in another thread for having a guy upgrade from a 760 to a 480 as a waste of money, yet here you are trying to get a guy to upgrade from an 8GB 390x to a 1060 6gb... Its not only a more expensive card, but not even an upgrade in performance in many games.

There is only a 5% difference between a MSI Gaming 390x and the MSI Gaming 1060 6gb, and he'd be losing 2 gb of vram.

https://www.computerbase.de/thema/grafikkarte/rangliste/

Well, glad to see all these posts! Haha. Anyway, I guess I probably put a little too much emphasis on power usage, it's really not that big of deal for me.

There is no reason to upgrade your card. You'll see a 5% difference at best overall. That 390x is still an amazing card. The only reason to upgrade would be if you could sell it for the same price as your upgrade cost.

This guy has the right answer.
Yep, the usual suspects trying to discredit any recommendation of nVidia, even when it is obviously the best (only) logical choice. If the op wants to upgrade, a 1070 is the only currently available choice. If the op is willing to spend 250.00 for a cooler, quieter system, with a sidegrade in performance, the 1060 is similar in performance to a 480, but will use less power. That really makes no sense to me though. If you can afford that, just go the extra for a 1070. More efficient, better performance, and even a pretty decent card if one wants to upgrade to 1440p at some point. As for Vega, we have been hearing the "wait for Vega" meme for months.

Exactly. Or if you life somewhere out in nowhere and pay 10x times normal price for electricity. 480x and 1060 6 GB are side-grades. Yes, much less power use but else? They offer worse performance/$ than the 390x and especially the 290x offered.

At least OP wait for vega release that should make above 2 cards cheaper.

Well, glad to see all these posts! Haha. Anyway, I guess I probably put a little too much emphasis on power usage, it's really not that big of deal for me. I just don't want to go backwards. XPlane 11 is new and it appears works well with newer cards. I am going to be using DaVinci Resolve, OBS Studio, Adobe CC Suite, etc. I know Adobe really favors nVidia it seems? That might have actually been the reason behind considering the 1060, plus the fact the 390x is a older card. That's why I don't think getting a 480 would be that great of idea. Really not benefiting much beyond the power consumption. But maybe I'm reading into that nVidia advantage too much...

The OP also said this.....
quote:
"I'm building a new system with a Ryzen for video rendering. I currently have a 390x, but that is power hungry. What card would I need to get in order to be equivalent or better with lower power draw?"

This is why I went with a gtx1060.
He wanted lower power usage and = or better performance.

Only sidegrades now for that price range. I mean the 1060 does tend to be faster in newer games as well, but ultimately you are getting same performance for lower energy consumption.

I suggest you change your incandescent light bulbs with several quality 12-15W LED ones and you can save over 500W.

Sometimes its not just about the cost of electricity but the heat that a 275 watt gpu will fill you case with. It might even effect cpu overclock temps or how hard you psu fan works. It also increases noise.
It will heat your room in the summer and make it uncomfortable.

But you quoted that post so I assumed you read it when you started to recommend a 1060...

Buying a 1060 would give him barely any performance inc if any and yes, lower power draw, but less memory and cost him ~$240 or more.

Yup! Thanks everyone! That's all I need for now. I got a good deal on my current 390x, looks like I could eBay it for around $180-$200 and if I could get a good deal (was looking at one Asus 6GB card AR for about $210) it would be roughly the same if not just a tiny bit more. I just wanted confirmation I wasn't taking a big step back. In the end, IF I get a good enough deal on an nVidia card, I may do that, but not unless it is roughly equal cost. I know I'll get some small benefit since some of the apps I use are more nVidia friendly.

I would wait for a few months so Vega will launch, having all the options ready and then decide what to do.

I'm shocked anyone would pay $200 for a used 390X in the month of March 2017. Is there a Hawaii mining fetish (that doesn't affect Polaris 10) still? I cannot otherwise accept human beings being dumb enough to pay $200 for a used 390X when we have new-in-box 1060s, 480s, for less.

A you certain this the market price that actual deals are closing on?

Yeah a good condition used 390X with original box still sells for around $200...as weird as that seems being a GPU designed in 2013. They still hold their own today though. Personally i'd opt for an 8GB RX 480 over a 390X....

Yes. I considered selling the NIB 390 DDs I received from XFX as RMA replacements for 290 DDs, but decided I was too lazy to switch drivers.
That and I'm only driving 3x 1920x1200 @ 60Hz.

Your doing the right thing , some people jus come into a thread and don't read it and give random recommendations.
The 1060 will give you exactly what you were askin for.

I'm not sure why you think the 1060 is better for those applications, the 480 is faster in most compute tasks you are interested in

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMngo78LJ2A

The 480 would also be much cheaper, if you could sell your 390x for over $200 you'd actually make money (or at least break even faster shipping).

1070 or wait for Vega
I wouldn't do 1060/480 for side grade just for power efficiency.
If you wait for flash sales, you can get the 1070 less than $350 which is pretty awesome for this card.
If you're willing to buy used, you can get a pretty nice (eg. eVGA SC) 1070 for < $300.
I'm considering picking up a pair of SCs locally for $500.

It all depends on the games you want to play.

I upgraded from a 290 to a 1070 and saw a 75-100% performance boost simply because I play games that heavily favor nvidia.

The 390x is a great 1080p card that undervolts incredibly well. My R9 290 could do a -100mv underclock at nearly stock clocks.

A -100mv undervolt with lower clockspeeds will basically make your 390x super efficient. If you need more performance, the 1070 is a good card, even for 4k60 gaming. If you are still on 1080p, I would hold off on upgrading. If you are on a higher resolution, the 1070 will be worth it. I wouldn't buy new however.

Used 1070's are getting cheaper every week and are pretty safe to buy from a reputable seller.

If all you need is lower power consumption, Undervolt and Underclock! AMD cards are incredibly power efficient when tuned properly. I recommend MSI Afterburner regardless of your brand and model.

If you don't want to tune it, just lower core clock 100 mhz and memory clock by 1 ghz and give it a -100mv offset. Chances are, that will be safe and easy to do. Just don't apply settings on boot until you are confident that it is stable.

Another GTX 1070 upgrade or wait for Vega vote

Why sidegrade to either GTX 1060 or 480X??? GTX 1070 is a great upgrade and would last you longer.
