Will someone please explain what the deal is with all of these "gay mufflers" I see all over the place? You know what I'm talking about, the cars with the almost foot-wide exhaust pipes that accomplish nothing more (yeah yeah backpressure) than making their 4-cylinder rice burning engine have a horrendous high pitched sputter?

Gimme a Viper anyday... till then I'll stick with my '67 Firebird 400

Speedo,

First of all I Cheezy is talking about the Cobra R not the regular Cobra. Secondly I ever try racing a Saleen Stang? Youd see the back of its bumper. Why would I want to drive a Ricer that has a high pitched sound and sounds like there is a gerbil under the hood.

I want a V8 that sounds bad ass. Nothin says Im bad ass like a V8.

Different strokes for different folks.. I came from the "No replacement for displacement" school. I had a "white trash" 79 Cutlass with a 383 stroker (chevy engine.. of course ) and my Brother had a 68 Camaro with a 427 from a 69 vette. Very fast, very fun.. For going straight. Now when it came to the twisties, they suck without complete suspension overhauls. Now take a rice banger.. I have a 90 CRX si.. a few enhancements so far.. mainly intake, header and exhaust. I can pretty much keep up with most things on the road, but get me in the twisties and I'll kill ya. It's all a matter of choice and what you like in a ride. I find that my CRX is more practical for street driving because it's pretty fast, gets great gas mileage and handles like its on rails.. STOCK. the few upgrades I added for less than $700 gave me another 15 horses.. not bad when you start at 108 and your car weight less than nothing..

well. that's my 2¢

They no longer make supras
uh, that's not true at all. Toyota still makes supras. however, they stopped shipping the supra over to the united states in the year 1998.

Sheez people as long as it's got four wheels, a engine, and runs its fine for me, j/k. As for reliability I think how you take care of your car and how lucky you are makes the difference. I have a 95 Mustang and it's never given me any problems (I think waxing the car every week is obsessive, no?), but of course my family has also had some Japanese cars with serious problems. Not to mention the way cars are built today and how companies 'crossover' a American, Japanese, or even European car may not be made from where you think they come from. Me, I want a BMW M5, maybe a Lincoln LS, oh there's that Mr2 spyder, oh 2002 Thunderbird, and there's that Saleen supercar *sigh*.

Now I wish I had the fuel efficiency of a Civic but of course my car is a whole lot heavier and has a V6, but now I feel much safer and in an accident I would probably go through less damage. I once saw a horrible accident between a 99 Civic and a Dodge RAM (RAM 1, Civic -5). As for 'fixing up' 'rice cars' I do admit that some look real silly but of course they would probably beat the pants off of my 'stang but do they really need the 50 inch spoiler, the multicolored silvery paint (that looks like someone spend a bare minimum of time putting it on), the cheap HID knock offs, the 13' wheels that stick out of the car to do that. Now some of my friends do a lot lot of fixing up cars with their 'rice' cars and German performance monsters but you can't tell, well unless you are racing them (then tails lights and dust is all you'll see). That's how 'sports' cars should be. Take it from me, I'm female, nothing attracts me to a car but a purr of a good engine and speed, looks don't cut it alone. Of course, you know what they say about big flashy cars, the more flashy they are the more the owners are trying to make up for something.

Just my little commentary, I'll go wax my 'stang now.

Let us all just remember that we are in America, where American auto tuning is at its best. In japan, where i am sure finer japanese tuning is done, there are tons of fast japanese cars that can compete with american cars. Take for instance the skylines and the silvias and all those cars that will never make it to America because of import costs. just my two cents.

I thought a majority of the problems for importing was because of pollution levels that don't meet the standards in America and its not worth it to research and develop more fuel economy in their engines.

Hmm there's also a problem with the fuel. I have a friend with a M3 who replaced the chip to make it a 'euro' version (to increase some speed or something, etc.) and he says that even with 92 octane it sometimes makes his car knock, I guess in europe they are 95 or something (another reason their gas costs more). Therefore he has to put in some high performance racing stuff in the engine every once in a while, course the stuff costs like $25 an oz. So having cars that use higher octanes and stuff can be a problem unless you got money.

As for enviromental regulations, the gas we have now suck anyways. He (he's got a chemical bio degree) pointed out that the high performance stuff is safer than the gas we have now. It's just BS from car comps, politics, etc., and expense of all the change that we would need thats causing all the probelms.

Hey, to anyone who drives a sports car, I drive a ford ranger xlt v6, and i would love to see ANY of you try to move a couch!!!! So many people always talk about how fast their car can go, how low their car is, and the amount of money they spent. Then after all that, they need to come to me to move something like a chair, because their car doesn't even fit another person, let alone any cargo. So to all you people with your lowered cars, when you look in your rear veiw mirror, the only thing you wll see is the Ford emblem on my grill.

Hey BigCert,

I was actually kidding. All of my friends are asian and they drive souped up cars. And yes, they also own computers and I got them started on this forum (they'll love your response).

Sarcasm is either not your forte or I wasn't obvious enough that it was a joke, so I'll let your comments slide....this time.

On a completely different note, Frank Rizzo imitations are pretty old.

I've driven a lot cars, and what I've found is that its a LOT harder to make a car fun than is it to make it fast. Besides if you live in the land of the delayed adolesent, ie either end of California, there are too many seriously fast cars around to even dream about you being the fastest. People are insane, one place I used to get my old 914 Porsche fixed at did an engine swap for a guy who kept blowing the motor in his turbo Porsche. They dropped in a 9 liter Donovan racing engine. How do you deal with that kind money?

My favorite is Andy Granitelli's car (years ago OK), outside pure stock Chevy Caprice Classic II with landau roof and opera windows, inside pure NASCAR with just under 1000 hp. His hobby was blowing off the yuppies in their new Ferarri etc.
