I know this is totally OT, but since everyone else is giving their opinion, I might as well give mine.
I agree with all those who feel that it is simply an issue of preference and affordability. If someone wants a muscle car, fine. If someone else wants a rice rocket, fine. If someone wants a huge SUV, fine. If someone wants a grocery getter, fine. It's all preference. When it comes to cars, there is no definite right or wrong way about it, as long as you are with in the bounds of safety and legality.
Now, I have driven a wide variety of cars from very slow to fairly fast, and there are good points and bad points to each one. The fastest cars I've driven were a 98 Cobra and a 94 RX-7 Turbo R2. I really liked the power of those cars, but I also like the looks of a lot of ricemobiles. I currently own a bone stock 98 Dodge Neon Sedan SOHC 5spd. Now, naturually I would have liked to have had a much better (faster and better handling) car, but that was all I could afford at the time of purchase (college student and all). I am currently in the process of purchasing a 98 Neon R/T sedan. I would still like a nicer car, but right now, that's the maximum I can afford, and I like that particular body style. I plan to do the basic bolt-ons, but I don't plan to change the appearance of the car (except for maybe removing the white stripes) because I'm not a showy person. I personally would rather have a car that speaks by performance and not by looks. But once again, that's what I prefer for ME.
I also agree that talking about what car is faster than the other gets ridiculous. You shouldn't compare a stock car to a modded car. And you shouldn't compare cars in different classes or price ranges. It's definitely apples and oranges. And besides, half the time it's all about driver skill. I personally have raced my bone stock Neon against a 93 Firebird (v6 5spd), 95 Ranger (v6 auto), 87 CRX (5spd), 97 Mustang (v6 auto), 96 Mustang (v6 5sd), 96 Maxima (v6 auto), 96 Sunfire GT (5spd), 93 Integra (auto), 95 Prelude (non VTEC 5spd), 2000 prelude (non VTEC auto), 95 Del Sol (non VTEC 5spd), and probably several more, and I have beaten them all. However, I would not say my car is faster than all those, because in several instances I won simply because I drove my car better than the other person.
Now, one thing that cracks me up is when people get a really fast car, but then don't know how to drive it. My friend with the Cobra never runs it above 3000rpm. The one time he let me drive it, he almost had a heart attack. I ran it up to the redline a couple of times and he totally freaked out. He thought his engine was going to explode. I also went down a curvy narrow road at about 55mph, and he thought we were going to fly off into the ditch. I had driven the same road at 75mph in my Neon the day before. His girlfriend drives his car better than he does, and now he hardly lets her drive it anymore. If someone is going to have a nice sports car, they should at least know its capabilities and how to drive it.
Well, that's my rant.
