two words - mustangs suck.
"ooh, look at me, i drive a car 30% of the world drives alsoooo"
"i drive the ORIGINAL sports car..."
blah blah blah blah blah.

i can walk faster than a mustang.
i've seen crap ass stock neons beat a mustang.
i've seen my crap ass stock 93 civic beat a mustang. (by a lot, too)
the thing is...mustangs suck
and the drivers suck more. =)

I know this is totally OT, but since everyone else is giving their opinion, I might as well give mine.

I agree with all those who feel that it is simply an issue of preference and affordability. If someone wants a muscle car, fine. If someone else wants a rice rocket, fine. If someone wants a huge SUV, fine. If someone wants a grocery getter, fine. It's all preference. When it comes to cars, there is no definite right or wrong way about it, as long as you are with in the bounds of safety and legality.

Now, I have driven a wide variety of cars from very slow to fairly fast, and there are good points and bad points to each one. The fastest cars I've driven were a 98 Cobra and a 94 RX-7 Turbo R2. I really liked the power of those cars, but I also like the looks of a lot of ricemobiles. I currently own a bone stock 98 Dodge Neon Sedan SOHC 5spd. Now, naturually I would have liked to have had a much better (faster and better handling) car, but that was all I could afford at the time of purchase (college student and all). I am currently in the process of purchasing a 98 Neon R/T sedan. I would still like a nicer car, but right now, that's the maximum I can afford, and I like that particular body style. I plan to do the basic bolt-ons, but I don't plan to change the appearance of the car (except for maybe removing the white stripes) because I'm not a showy person. I personally would rather have a car that speaks by performance and not by looks. But once again, that's what I prefer for ME.

I also agree that talking about what car is faster than the other gets ridiculous. You shouldn't compare a stock car to a modded car. And you shouldn't compare cars in different classes or price ranges. It's definitely apples and oranges. And besides, half the time it's all about driver skill. I personally have raced my bone stock Neon against a 93 Firebird (v6 5spd), 95 Ranger (v6 auto), 87 CRX (5spd), 97 Mustang (v6 auto), 96 Mustang (v6 5sd), 96 Maxima (v6 auto), 96 Sunfire GT (5spd), 93 Integra (auto), 95 Prelude (non VTEC 5spd), 2000 prelude (non VTEC auto), 95 Del Sol (non VTEC 5spd), and probably several more, and I have beaten them all. However, I would not say my car is faster than all those, because in several instances I won simply because I drove my car better than the other person.

Now, one thing that cracks me up is when people get a really fast car, but then don't know how to drive it. My friend with the Cobra never runs it above 3000rpm. The one time he let me drive it, he almost had a heart attack. I ran it up to the redline a couple of times and he totally freaked out. He thought his engine was going to explode. I also went down a curvy narrow road at about 55mph, and he thought we were going to fly off into the ditch. I had driven the same road at 75mph in my Neon the day before. His girlfriend drives his car better than he does, and now he hardly lets her drive it anymore. If someone is going to have a nice sports car, they should at least know its capabilities and how to drive it.

Well, that's my rant.

the new mustang gt has a V-8 4.6 liter engine with 260 bhp...it goes 0-60 in 5.5 seconds. i'd like to see you walk faster than that thing. and no, 30% of the world do not drive Ford Mustangs. you might try 1.5%. before you open your mouth, you better know what the hell you're talking about

I DRIVE A DODGE STRATUS!!!!

no serious, i drive a 1995 Sentra, decent car.

I've also driven a Dodge Viper GTS on Gran Turismo I & II, and if the physics engine on that game is as true as they claim, I will totally agree that they handle like crap.

oops, i apologize for my mistake. the thing is, there's absolutely nothing special about a mustang. in fact, the only thing that differentiates a mustang driver and a normal person is their big mouth and the huge stick up their butt. ooh, 260 horsepower...for an V8? that's pretty pathetic. the s2000 puts out 240 in a 4-cylinder. the honest truth is, it's not the car, it's the driver. if you can't drive (like most mustang drivers out there), having a viper won't even help you...

I have not owned any American cars other than a '93 Jeep Wrangler. However, I have driven those American muscle cars several times before, and they are kind of fun. They are certainly not a kind of cars I want to take up on winding roads, but those high torque/low rpm V8's can be quite entertaining. Especially, those made before the oil shock with a monster size, 4 miles/gallon engine are very cool.

On the contrary, I personally have a little problem with the image which those muscle cars have, or it does not quite go with my style.

Cars (and motorcycles) are not quite like computers. You alway want to have the fastest when you pick a computer. Everyone likes to have PIII 1Ghz over 486 33Mhz SX. However, cars and motorcycles are different. Some like them big, others like them small. Some like them fast and stiff, others like them to be comfortable. They also have different images wich add to their drivers. Some wants look like a tough guy. Others like to have an active image. Some like to look cool, others don't care for it. They are all different, and running 0-60 in such and such seconds is only one of the many factors people consider when they pick a car they like. If you are comparing cars the way you compare Athlon over PIII, you are totally missing a point, or you are spending way too much time on Anandtech and to upgrade your computer.

We also need to respect people with different tastes and cultures. We all come in different colors and flavors, so our tastes in cars are also different. You drive cars you like, and I drive cars I like. And we are all happy. Think about those people who only had a choice between Yugo and Trabi and that's it. We are all lucky, aren't we?

Also, don't think rice is cheap everywhere in the world. Rice is expensive in Japan, and if you call those Japanese made (not quite)Civics ricers, you are calling them expensive cars.

What? You dissing the Yugo? I've got a modded one that would
knock the socks off of any shopping cart, provided
that we're not racing on a downhill slope, cuz I've yet to
add after-market brakes. And a 1 Speed to 2 Speed upgrade.

But no money right now, so i'll just add stripes on my odometer.

Gotta say fellas this whole thread has almost seemed like a race war goin on. I know some people actually came here to post their real opinions about fixed up asian cars or american cars. Personally as a Chinese I think "ricerockets" is pretty derogatory, but whatever if you want to be ignorant then go head. Secondly. Most of you are saying oh no asain fixed cars suck and its a waste of money, I happen to think its pretty cool. I have seen super fast fixed up japanese cars and they are beautiful, but yes there are really ugly ones... Here are some things to think about
1.Our cars keep their value over the years
2.They are more reliable
3.Even after we fix up our cars its still cheaper than a ford mustang or whatever(if u do it right)
4.Mustangs=crap so what if they have 260hp for a v8 thats weak take a good look at the S200
5.They handle better, and by lowering it it handles HELLA good.

Also don't you guys realize that this has much to do with overclocking? Lets say all you American car lovers hate on us asian car owners because you think that fixed up cars are stupid and a waste of money. Ok now instead of your weak mustangs go ahead and buy your P3's or gigahertz cpus. Ok now us "asians" think about this, we want to spend less and get almost the same performance right? So we go buy a $45 dollar DURON overclock it and ROCK THE HELL OUTA THE P3's or at least come close. So in other words this thread needs to end

p.s.
I cant wait until the acura RSX comes out, I think I might get one, they look cool.

LOL OVERCLOCKME is a dumba$$
TALK ABOUT BEING IGNORANT
I am a chinese-american, and i have driven many american and japanese cars over the years, and they both have their ups and downs. Generally, yes japanese cars are more reliable and their engines achieve better mileage. But American car companies do know how to make very powerful and effective engines. Why do you think that the three largest car companies in the world are GM, Ford, and Daimler Chrysler?
1. Many Japanese cars also lose their value of the years. Take a good look look at Nissan, Subaru, Hyundai, and tell me which cars keep their value. And not all Honda and Toyota cars have a great resale value either.
2. Are all "your" cars more reliable? you race with a Honda S2000 for a couple years, i guarantee you it will break down so fast. If you take good care of a car, it will last for years to come. I had a 82 Camaro SS and it runs great. I also had a 1988 Honda Accord and it completely broke down just last year.
3. You are comparing a Mustang GT to a Honda S2000. You must be smoking something. The Honda S2000 has the most bhp per liter engine in the nation. BIG CRAP. IT REDLINES AT 9000! And the S2000 costs about 6 grand more than a GT. And i seriously doubt you could find one anyways. If you wanna compare price range, pit a 2000 Honda Prelude against a 2000 Mustang GT. And I'll be honest, i'd take the prelude over the mustang, because i like the look of it better, but the mustang will smoke the prelude, hands down.
One other thing, you keep refering to japanese cars, as "our" cars. Tell me, how does being asian make them yours? If you ask me, that's a pretty ignorant statement right there. before you complain about any type of cars, you better know your crap. till then, shut your mouth.

I'd have to agree - this thread does need to end. Some folks are getting a little too emotional here. The bottom line is that our cars are extensions of ourselves. The more economic minded of us will gravitate toward efficient and inexpensive means of transport, whereas those of us with a little cash to burn will go for the modded cars of whichever type appeals to us. This is a way for us to enjoy our hobbies and goes to show we spend time doing other things than staring at our monitors all day.
Since our cars can be very much a part of who we are we (being general here..) can get a bit upset when someone starts harshing our rides. Blow it off - it's not that big a deal. If someone doesn't like my Cougars then fine - I'm building them up for me, not for them - right? If you're doing it to try to impress others then maybe you have other issues to resolve - but if you're into your car for the sake of making yourself happy then you're on the right track. I personally don't care what type of car it is - if someones spent time and effort on it then it deserves a little respect if for nothing more than that.

To each their own.

If anyone cares, here's one to check out:

Is this not a forum to post hot deals???SO let people post their hot deals, and stop flaming them. If the deals aren't so hot, then say so, but don't diss the people just because they like something you don't. Also, if you want to discuss import modding then go to www.superhonda.com or www.honda-acura.net

One would think we're in the OT forum!
Anyhow, my opinion: Japanese cars are cool, as long as their not stupidly modded (wings tips only), but the exact same applies for domestics and european cars. It's not hard to find stupid cars from anywhere you want to.
I wouldn't be caught dead in an SUV though

omg, another flaming war...

Can we all feel the love for BOTH AMERICAN and IMPORTS...geez...who gives a damn HOW THEY FIX IT UP (i prefer fixed up cars than 'stangs, but my sis thinks otherwise..yes, i live in so-cal with all azns)

WHO GIVES A DAMN...this ORIGINALLY was a hotdeal, xcept for self-rightous bigots who think ALL AMERICAN cars is GOOD, geez...

Who cares if you drive a 'stang and can smoke a civic and/or u drive a NOS-turbo/header,intake,camshaft, etc etc civic that can smoke a VIPER, who cares? It seems like those in favor of imports are more levelheaded than those who drive American cars...

It's like comparing apples and oranges...don't u guys know how to ANALYZE wat u r comparing? Lots of ppl here know how to analyze and understand WAT THEY ARE COMPARING ABOUT, but noooo, some of you ppl (god-forbid you didn't get a college degree) keep comparing a car that is ONLY muscle car to something that is a V-4!! V8 s V4..hmmm...god

However, it is the prerogative RIGHT OF THE OWNDER OF AN IMPORT TO DO WAT HE/SHE DAMN PLEASES...so there...

a lot of my friends (some azn, some caucasion) do NOS in their 'stangs/cameroes, so i don't hate, i jus respect every1 and every1's personal taste

tight cougar Malathion, heres my Olds 442

http://www.homestead.com/gmo415/

and to Overclockme's ignorant statements:

1.Our cars keep their value over the years
"Our" cars?? whos the racist?? Were all Americans. and imports DO NOT keep their value when you #%^% up the suspension, bumpers, redline and downshift so much the clutch tranny and engine are dead tired....see what the dealer says at trade in time...the only people who will buy a car like that is another import racer

2.They are more reliable
AGAIN, NOT when you #%^% up the suspension, bumpers, redline and downshift so much the clutch tranny and engine are dead tired....Domestic perf. cars can go 100,000 miles in stock form and still hit 0-60 under 6 secs...

3.Even after we fix up our cars its still cheaper than a ford mustang or whatever(if u do it right)
Wrong again. A NEW fixed up import is almost always more expensive than a new Domestic. Used imports which have $$$ spent to modify are more expensive than stock used dometic perf. cars because AS YOU SAID, imports hold their value more, and a stock used z-28 or Trans Am is way cheaper and needs no mods to achieve same level of performance...

4.Mustangs=crap so what if they have 260hp for a v8 thats weak take a good look at the S200
These are completely different cars...one has no high end, one has no low end...

5.They handle better, and by lowering it it handles HELLA good.
Almost all cars look better lowered. As a general rule, Stock imports handle better than stock domestics. But the way we see 90% of modded imports on the road, the lowering is done completely wrong, the wheels are tilted and theyre rolling 4 temporary spares...turning a good-handling stock import into a DANGEROUS and stupid car...and these are the ones with the body kits which are already cracked...thus the reason people are making fun of them..

I will always prefer my stangs real wheel drive....And let me tell ya its gets fun up here when it snows in Chicago.....I find myself a nice Best Buy parking lot...Go in a find a HOT DEAL on a DVD or two and when I leave its donut city.

Cant do that in any front will drive car. Except you can fake it by slightly pulling up on the emergency brake.

I dont know imports or domestic....Who cares. I like my Stang others like their Civics. It doesnt really matter ya know.

I give the imports one thing though...I gotta a couple of buddies and each has a 3000Gt VR4...Now thats a nice car. I just happen to like made in America cars more...Not being racist just a preference...So if I wanted a 3000GT Id go with the Stealth.

I know I'll get some crap for this one...but I gotta change this thread somehow...So here it goes:

PISS ON CHEVY!!!!!! LOL

back to the topic, like i said earlier....this is a good deal.

this whole thing started because somebody started flaming on rice rockets and said that fixing up the cars is a waste of time. Body kits coem for domestic cars too, and if it is such a waste of time then just don't read the post. no point in flaming.

I can't even count how many rice burners I have left in the dust with my saleen, heck even with my SVT contour I spank the crappola out of all of them I come against.

and please, sure there are those who own stangs that cannot drive, but the majority of just plain awful drivers are those owning the hyped rice burners, look at how many you see with the front skirt ripped off of the sides all banged in.

I really regret going FWD with the Contour, all for the conservations of gas and my wallet. I would buy another mustang in a minute, in fact my next car will hopefully be a 95 S351, not the biggest 4.6 fan.

Oh well I will continue to spank riceboys in my ford it is just too easy, only difference is their cars fart while I am passing them.
