Saw this thread on FW. And ended up paying $64.02 AR.

Got it in today and things went really well. Details here if you are curious.

Anyway, I went to buy one one for a friend of mine, and they friggin lowered the price another 15 bucks!

69.99 at Amazon
10.00 off $75 that can be found on FW (the first one is still good and does work when the shipping is added in).
20.00 3com rebate

48...something after shipping.

Details for the Amex PM in the FW thread.

Hope this works just fine for you guys.

Curious, do some cable providers NOT give you a cable modem with service? I see lotsa Cable modems for sale, but just don't know the reason...

They do provide Cable modems, but if you can score one that works with your system, you normally save around $10 a month. Which can easily pay for itself in a few months.

As I said in the other thread, worked/works better than it should with ATTBI in Pittsburgh.

well most the time you rent the cable modem from the isp. i'll use my situation for example.

my cable prodiver charges 35 dollars for service plus 15 for cable modem rental. that's about 50 bucks (with fees and taxes, it's more like 80 bucks j/k)

anyway, i bought my own cable modem and now i only pay 35 dollars per month (with fees and taxes, it's more like 80 bucks)

This modem may not work with AT&T Cable.

Just a heads up. I tried, modem wouldn't even get an IP to start the setup process. Finally I told AT&T the model, they said "yeah, you're not the first to try....they are NOT compatible with our systems".

Check your local cable service for a modem-compatiblily list.

Also, the same-basic deal has been posted several times already....

My $.02

Dude, didn't you even read my post? It works just fine with ATT cable here in Pittsburgh(2.9 Mb/s), and from the posts I read, its just fine in pretty much 70-80% of the rest of ATT network. Its worth a shot for 50 bucks and I do believe that Amazon has a 30 day money back policy. Yes, its the model below(210), but the ATT rep told me they can't even tell what the model or type of the modem is. I didn't even have to tell her what it was and he 3com box and modem has large stickers that tell you to tell them its the 220 and you are fine.

I will admit, it does seem to be a little hit and miss with getting it to work but its seems at least 70% possitive outcome afterwards. Its posts like your's that scared me off months ago from trying this. No need to scare the rubes with sweeping generalizations. :disgust:

does this have built in firewall support and acts like a router? Anyone know whether RoadRunner will let us return the modem if we get our own cable modem?

I'm not sure about the firewall, but it doesn't act like a router. It has a single USB port and ethernet (giving you the option to connect it to your computer via ethernet or USB -- choose ethernet). Your best bet is to get this modem (it's a hell of a deal at $30 shipped) and get yourself a cheap, good cable/dsl router when they're on sale. All of those nowadays have built in firewalls.

Mine showed up Thursday. I hooked and powered it up and it connected to Comcast with 3 minutes. I did a speed test at dslreports and it appears to be 150-200Kbs slower than the Motorola that I am renting from Comcast. I need to test some more to get a better average. I read in some older threads on 3Com deals that it would be slower until provisioned. I called Comcast to have them Provision it, gave them the MAC Address, Serial number, and Model number (I gave them mdl# 3CR29220 See this thread as to why ).

So now I sit and wait for Comcast to call me back and let me know that it is provisioned to see if the speed is improved. However the Modem does work with Comcast in Florida. It runs much cooler than the 5 year old motorola (that is Huge) I never realized it before that thing gets hot enough to bake cookies

Works fine for me too on Comcast. Saw you say the same thing on DSL Reports Ziptar, I wouldn't hold your breath about someone calling you back, or your speeds improving once it's provisioned. You probably had the really old non-docsis white Motorola which isn't capped properly. I called about a billing issue last week, they noticed my modem wasn't provisioned correctly so they went ahead and did it. They managed to knock me off line for the whole weekend. I just got off of a 20 minute call with them to get credit for 2 days. Seems like normal speeds for most people on Comcast is around 1200-1300/100. I wish I had my @Home 4500/1000 again.

Yeah, That's the Motorola that I am renting. I never got a call but I may be provisioned... I've been doing some testing and swaping the modems back and forth for the last hour or so and the speeds come pretty close!! I guess it's safe to cut the UPC off the box and mail ot in.

Thanks for the deal!!

Lordthing,

How did you manage to get 2.9 Mbps with ATT cable? I thought that the throttled the speed to 1.5 Mbps after the demise of their relationship with @Home.

I've been debating about picking up a modem and I might jump on one of these.

This may be the rebate you're looking for. It's for a 3com OfficeConnect Cable Modem and looks like the one on Amazon's page.

http://cache.computers4sure.com/comassets/MfgCoupons/2604.pdf

Purchase a 3Com OfficeConnect USB Cable Modem between January 1, 2002 and July 30, 2002 and receive a $40 mail-in rebate

<EDIT> Nevermind, I should have read the fine print before posting. It says only good for purchases at Computer4Sure... Sorry...

My speed almost doubled after @Home went down!

My fastest DL so far was at over 500K/second (Over 3mbit level)!

High speed is nice.

Hey Flippy boy, are you seeing something I'm not? That link you gave shows shipping is another 13 bucks making the total around $53. Is there a deal I'm not aware of?

Thanks.

Don't even bother. RR will NOT credit you anything even if you replace their modem with this one and it works perfectly fine with their systems.
