<< Wow! I must say, that e-smith ISO looks amazing. I just downloaded it and I'm gonna try it this afternoon. I'll let you guys know how this works.

Definately keep us updated. It looks like something I would be interested in. Also the opensource version is found out www.e-smith.org.

KeyzerSoze,

Get real, partner. I'm running a homebrew Redhat proxy/router on a Pentium 75 with Apache, Squid, DHCP, DNS caching, firewall, intruder detection, etc. etc. and my utilization gets to 10% on a HEAVY DAY. At work I'm running twice as much stuff on a Celeron 466 and it's not even running Linux, it's doing Win2K Server. So you should really shut yer yap unless you actually know what you're talking about.

CigarSmokedByClinton,

Thanks for the link to e-smith, by the way. I'm downloading it now.

Another Linux Based Gatway ISO distribution:

http://www.clarkconnect.org

I'm really a BSD head, got fed up with my SMC and Linksys Gateways, and CISCO still didn't release PPPoE for the PIX yet. So I tried to spin a BSD solution, but pf just isn't mature enough yet to handle conntrack modules for NetMeeting.

So I dug around and found CC. Pretty easy to setup, use and hack. Got it up on the latest pre kernel and iptables in a weekend, with Netmeeting support.

I checked out e-smith. Looks about the same, but noticed its based on 2.2 kernels, and RedHat 7.0.

CC is 7.2 and 2.4, so you don't have to worry about ipf and ipchains being phased out, since its using iptables instead.

Just another option. Nice management utilities too.

Description of product says "Operating systems supported: Windows 2000/98/95/NT".

I'm wondering how the E-mail Server, Firewall, Web Server, Web Cache, File Server, FTP Server, etc. are run?

Do they provide a CD that will have these services no matter what MS OS you run? Or does it exist in ROM? (unlikely)

Can I recover these services if I accidentally 'crash' the HDD while tinkering with it?

Hey people!!! I think that rather than this thread in Hot Deals grow to 300+ posts (like the CyberWings one) I'd like to propose that we move our technical questions and advice to this thread in Operating Systems I know that U linux Gurus will be able to set it up "licketysplit" as my Grandmother says, but I may have a problem/question or two. So I figured that I'd stick a thread in there and we could help each other out!

Anyway, slycat

I figure that for me, it's aight if it crashes but for a business, yeah...I don't think that they'd better be depending on this thing

CigarSmokedByClinton man...you've started a whole new cult! and I'M JOINING! heheheheh Thanks for the link man!

Got mine yesterday. Looks like it is running some flavor of *nix. Don't know which one.

The mobo has connections for the mouse and keyboard but the case doesn't allow access to them. Need to mod the case to use them, assuming they were not disabled by the OS.

It doesn't have a floppy or a CD ROM so I will have to ghost thru the LAN or physically take out the HDD from the box.

Anybody know a good way to ghost the HDD?

Glad you guys all think it as cool as I!! My brother has an esmith server set up in my apartment while he goes to europe this summer (lucky bast2rd). It was surprisingly easy to set up, and the options are limitless. I don't know much about it, but I can give it a shot if you have a question. PM me!

funny how each one has features I like...

3com-small footprint, headless, nice webadmin, updates via web (although there are none!), NO WEBMAIL

clarkconnect-nice web interface, nice statistics gathering and SNORT integration NO WEBMAIL, NO GROUP AND FOLDER CREATION, NO REMOTE ACCESS?

sme server-nice web interface, WEBMAIL! USER/GROUP/FOLDER creation! SAMBA/NETATALK configuation, PPTP support! SUPPORTS TAPE BACKUP! UPDATES VIA WEB! no statistics/reporting, no SNORT, no calendaring.

All are missing the SOHO calendaring function that would be a KEY addon...overall I like SME the best and it installs on any hardware.

All,
I have installed an configured, used all of these.

First, The 3com server is a very complete setup. It is completly monkey proof. I think the market they were going at here was non-tech office managers. The tools are limited, and if you plan to do more than ftp/mail this is not the OS for you.

SMEServer is excellent. I am currently running this in a production environment. I love all the modules and ease of use installing them. It does have IMP webmail, although its an older version so I updated that with no problems at all. There are a couple groupware packages for SME that will handle your calendaring. I don't like the fact that there are templates for everything in SME. It seems to limit things a little more. It is also built on the older Redhat Kernal.

I had installed 0.9x version of clarkconnect last week and was not impressed. I like the fact its built on the new Redhat Kernal and it is a lot more open but the tools were not that complete. This week they release v1.0 and I jumped at the chance to try it out. The interface is amazing! They fixed some serious bugs. They now include PHP, and Webmin as standard and that is key. mySQL is not installed by default which is a little disturbing, but a quick install of that and this box is ready. I'm now running this is a second production environment and I think this will be the version I stand by in the end.

As far as hardware, you can't beat the $199.99 3Com Server. I opened it up and connected a cdrom, and formated the drive with Clarkconnect. I know have clarkconnect running on my 3Com server without a hitch. Not a bad price for a footprint 500mhz system with 10gig hd and 2x 3com 10/100 network cards.

Hope this helps guys,
