This might make a good home server for folks with DSL/Cable connection.
CompGeeks
Contains E-Mail,Web,FTP,DHCP,Firewall etc..etc.. 3Com Model Number is 3C19504.
For $199 plus shipping is the cheapest I could find.

wow, cool price for a server. Celery 500 is plenty for web/ftp/mail. Wish I needed one.

Man, I was gonna jump all over this until I saw that it really was running a Celery 500MHz. I thought farstar was just joking. What kind of crap Email, Web, FTP, DHCP, Firewall, etc. server am I gonna run on a Celery 500MHz? I'd be much easier to just take my old machine and run some of these services. Hot for those who don't expect to be serving much from this box.

The Celeron 500MHz is plenty for a small web/file/mail server, the problem is that it only comes with 32MB of RAM.

It's got a purpose and I bet you it serves that purpose well. You can upgrade the RAM if you want, but you may not need to. This is designed for small offices >50 users, many of which won't be on at the same time. Also, I doubt this is running Windows

This thing would have no problems running web/ftp/mail/dns on a celeron 500!

I'm a big fan all-in-one internet servers. I just got a cobalt qube, I wonder how these compare, its only got a 150mhz MIPS processor and does web, mail, ftp, appletalk, dns and many other things very well. The cobalts work great for what they are supposed to do.

<< The msrp is $1995 is this means anything to anyone. >>

ROTFLMAO!!!!

When? 1999?

Celeron 500 - $32
Random Mobo w onboard vid - $40
10GB IDE Drive - $59
32MB RAM - $12
Random Case - $20
2x Random NIC - $20

=$183

And that's w/out even looking around for deals. Sorry to crap but it just doesn't seem that hot to me. I'm sure most of us have enough random parts laying around to put together a machine like this.

(All exact prices via spartantech.)

Well this probably has some sort of Proprietery Applications on the machine...hence the big price difference...

I mean the fastest Cobalt Raq have a 450MHz Processor but they go for over $1000 Bucks...

So it's not the hardware that is the big part of the price...

My $0.02

not thread crapping.
if u really have a small soho that you want something easy and fast to implement this may fit the bill.
..and its really, really cheap and yes, 3com is behind it so it won't be too crappy.

my main prob with it?
Single point of failure

Edit:...well, i guess u can buy 2

Could I add some more hard drives to it? I was looking at putting together a low cost server to run up here at school and I think this could work good. You think ti would be possible to put a 3rd nic in it and conenct the two ports in the room to it and then connect the nic to a switch and hookup the other pcs in the room?

You can image the drive and put the image on a larger disk. Then use Parition Magic to repartition it to take advantage of the added space.

This runs a Linux flavor is a good deal for a small office probably less then 20 people. And whomever pointed out the cost of the components. Can you also tell us where to find a fully pre-configured server package with web/ftp/email run from a web interface for $17 so we can complete your "build-up"

cigar,
Can you elaborate? If such an iso existed, I would definately be interested. I don't see it at the link you gave though?

I guess this seems like a good deal, but I want to build my own internet appliance. I don't think the 3Com unit is geared towards the do it yourself crowd anyway.

That e-smith software looks way cool. I was going to set up Red Hat with Samba to do file sharing, but this distro looks like a better option for me. I like to do things myself, but I don't want to pull my hair out doing it.

Thanks for the links to e-smith.
I need to figure out what to do with the stuff I already own rather than hang out on this board looking for more things to buy.

This is so so. The Dell PowerEdge 500C for $180 AR was hot. Wait around and I am sure we will see them again.
