I just love how people post so-called "Hot Deals" lately:

Hey, I've heard from a friend of a friend that one store will be giving out free keyboard to everyone who says &quot;Hi&quot; to the manager Lets all go and get on this deal !!!

Some of these arguments are just sad. PG quotes:

Notice that this &quot;ONE lab study&quot; still has to be given an out by including &quot;a well designed 'Win Modem'&quot;. Unfortunetly, finding a well designed win-modem, outside of a lab and in a retail package for a good price, isn't all that common. As for what they chose as thier &quot;standard external modem&quot; to compare with, god only knows.

Cybordolphin gives us a link to a modem review. While some people believe that win-modems transfer slower than thier strictly hardware cousins, I don't believe that's been a problem on any well made modem. The problem with win-modems is that they tax your system. I'd like to see that review done while the systems were actually being used for something in addition to the modem tests. I also notice the very limited selection of external modems that were tested. Not much use as a comparison to the internals. BTW, were any of the internals tested not win-modems? Most companies make it much less obvious than USR and thier &quot;Win modem&quot; line.

modem connect speeds depend on many factors the most notable is the phone line quality, I have lived in areas where the max you could get was 28.8, there wasn't even broadband avail there at the time either! then comes the quality of the modem and yes some win modems can be better than some hardware modems but this depends on the specific quality of components used!

Phone line quality, EMI and chip are factors that effect the speed of your modem. However, winmodem use some percentage(10-15%)of your processor and are more susceptible to EMI and problem with drivers.

For stability and reliability, hardware modem is a better choice even if you choose to switch to linux or other OS; your hardware modem is always there for you.

So no more fighting over which winmodem or hardware modem is a better. It's all depend on your preference and need. Winmodem or hardware modem will do the job of connecting to this forum for your need to find a Hot Deal. hehehe

The real problem with &quot;winmodems&quot; is expressed by the name. With few exceptions they only work under windows (and even the exceptions have exceptions). With a hardware modem you know you have a modem that will work with almost any operating system, and if you get an external serial hardware modem they will work with almost any platform.

My local Office Max in Pasadena, CA only sold one kind of internal 3Com PCI modem and it rings up at $99.99.

I agree, this is a terribly researched post. All it does is send people on a wild goose chase without any important details, like SKUs, or even more important, no weblinks.

First off, I didnt say &quot;HOT DEAL!!!&quot; I just simply thought I'd post somthing of interest that I found locally. I dont do WinModems personally but I knew a friend was lookin for a cheap one to replace his aging ISA board, so I picked up the slip you take to the counter to show him. I didnt pay too much attention to it really, but thought some of you might look around next time you were out browsing the stores. Didn't know that it would turn into such a fiasco, it IS a winmodem after all. The only thing on the slip looked to be a UPC number but I wasnt sure, so I didnt write it down. I've picked up many deals off here and thought I might return the favor.

BTW, yesterday my friend picked up the last 2 from our local store (Macon,GA)!! But I suppose that's just a &quot;wet dream&quot;

I can confirm that scornful was right about the deal. It was still listed for $119 on the shelves but rang up at $2.48 or something. Too bad they didn't have it in stock.
