No it's not a scam... they're just OOS. Someone from that company left me a voice mail last week stating that they were sorry that it has taken so long but there was a lag in getting stock of the product. She said that it would be shipping soon, and for waiting they were going to send me a 3Com stainless steel coffee mug. Whoopie!

I received mine today. I have not tried it out yet though. It is not in retail packaging, but in what can only be described as "promotional packaging."

I tried the D-Link DWL-650 this weekend when I bought my Sony FXA32. I was getting piss poor performance twenty feet away from my SMC Barricade. I returned it and ordered an Orinoco Gold off the internet. In the two days I have used it I have to say it is much better than the D-Link. I can see why the Orinoco's get such good reviews. I would be interested to see how these 3Com's compare.

It FINALLY showed up! I ordered this thing back in mid-November. I had just started calling this week to say "fuhgeddaboudit", when it shows up on my doorstep.

Now, to decide whether or not to keep it. I bought another PC card while waiting, so don't really have an immediate need for it.

Decisions....decisions......

I just about gave up on this offer too but my credit card got charged on the 8th and I expect to get it soon. I also couldn't wait forever so I ordered a cheap Belkin from Dell. That finally shipped too.

Been using my Linksys for over a month now, no problems.

And I didn't have to buy another card while I was waiting for it to arrive

<<

<< Ordered this one (Linksys) from Amazon last week at 71.95 (now 79.95).

Add $20 to get free shipping plus no tax in CA and there may be a $10 coupon to use.
>>

you are gonna be sorry that you got this linksys card! they are cheap for a reason...

We ordered one for lab testing, and it came in retail packing.

I have been using it at home with another USB card acting as an AP with ICS, where it works fine. Even with a 2.4G Phone around.

I have also used it in the lab connected to a Cisco AP.

I have not done any through put testing on it, so I cannot comment on the speed. I will let you know what I find.
I did find it very easy to use, and the 3COM software works pretty well, both for AdHoc and Infrastructure settings.
I do believe this is based on the Intersil design, but have not cracked the case yet.

Ok. you guys that describe it as retail packaging... Is it a box that is blue with whit writing? Not very fancy. Not colorful? If so, that is the same as I have, but I don't consider something this boring looking to be a retail box. Is 3com really that boring with their packaging?

I am not quite understand what makes this a hot deal.

There are quite a few wireless PC Card sold at Amazon at about the same price range. Am I missing something here?

Also, what is so special about this card that 3COM claims it to be the only Wireless LAN PC card with retractable XJACK(R) antenna.?

3com is known for quality. I had problem with other NIC card, but never a problem with 3com NIC card.

DSchell - Yes it is the Blue "Retail" box. I thought it looked pretty retail. If it is not in a brown box, or shrink wrap only, then it is retail.

dysdys - I think the XJack Antenna makes a very nice feature addition. Ever try and put your Notebook with a "traditional" WLAN card in a standard notebook case?

wsoung - Ours arrived via UPS.

Got my second one yesterday (The second came in less than a week). This time without the nifty business card holder.

Can you use the card if the antenna is NOT pulled out and is still inside the card? (I'm assuming that this will decrease the range, but if I'm close by then I would rather keep it in and only pull it out when I'm much further away.

BTW on the 3com site this retails for $124 I think...

I am also interested in what people are using for a WAP...

I'm not that familiar with wireless networking....Can I set this card up in a peer-to-peer network with my PC, without using a separate access point? I would use a USB adapter in the PC and this card in my laptop.

The Access Point will not matter, as long as it is IEEE 802.11b compatible (Could also be marked WiFi).

Personally I have used this card with a Cisco AP while at the office or in the laboratory. For the record this is called "Infrastructure" mode.

At home, I use the card in the same notebook to connect to my Windows 98 PC that has a different USB card attached. I actually am usind the ICS feature in Windows 98SE to access the internet wirelessly. Also, for the record this is called "Ad-Hoc" mode.

The 3COM 802.11 setup and connection tool is pretty nice, and works very well. I actually like it better than the Lucent/Orinoco software.

To hk29 - I have used the card with the antenna not ejected, but only for a distance of 5-6 feet. That doesn't mean it won't go further, I just haven't tried it.
