3Com Wireless (802.11b) PC Card for $79 shipped

I ordered one of these the other day; can't wait to get it!

In an earlier post, someone mentioned that these card only supports 40-bit WEP. I noticed that a f/w release, dated 14 Nov 2001, is available to bring it up to 128-bit WEP. Release 2.02 (it's a pretty big file, 29 MBs).

I was wondering if anyone has flashed their card to this release and whether or not it degrades performance. Also, anyone using this card with the Netgear ME102?

So wait, this is a PCMCIA card right? I'm getting a laptop tomorrow and this owuld be a sweet addition to it! Argh at least I dont have to make a decesion about the wireless car, but do about the laptop!

The difference I saw was that in the brc one that it asks for your country in addition to the other info. I dont get it. Any insight on this?

this came FAST!!! i signed up about a week ago!!! amazing.... the card works like a charm - i love how it's retractable!!! too bad i have the old Airport 1.2 - no good encryption or security.

man now i need something to connect my notebook to wireless internet .. i don't know how to do that ..
do i need an access pt ? or a gateway .. i don't get those.. confusing ...
i have a linksys 4 port router already .. do i just need an access pt connect to it , and i would be set ?

hey have any of you noticed that when the antenna is pushed in, its kinda crooked, like its only hooked in on one side? or is it just mine.

Yes, now you need an access point - WAP. Just plug in the WAP to one of your router ports.

In answer to DJBAMBAM's question (so he'll stop asking it ) Yes, it's a PCMCIA card. Not many people call them PCMCIA cards any more; no I don't know why... people probably just got tired of saying "PCMCIA". They're usually referred to as PC cards.

As far as why the page address looks difference, I don't think anyone knows. It doesn't really seem to matter.

I think dmk11 handled the other questions, except for that "crooked" question. I'm really hoping the answer is "Don't worry, man, some are just bent like that; it's not a big deal." That would be very Loveline, ca. 1993.

How long did it take before you got some sort of confirmation email on the order? I ordered last Thursday, and granted it's been a few business days, I have yet to "hear" anything on whether or not my order went through or not. Haven't checked if my CC has been charged or not...
