3D causes computer to freeze

When running any 3D programs the computer freezes/ studders, it will freeze and then about every 15 sec. it will change to a new frame.
No sign of slowdown it just happens without warning. The sound studders also. ctrl-alt-del doesn't work, only the reset button. Every once in a while after I have to reset, the boot up will tell me that I should check the power management in the bios. I have all the newest drivers for the video card and soundcard.
So far I have removed the sound card, still froze. Updated to a 400 watt PS, the new WD Hard Drive and reinstalled Win XP about 3 times.
Everything is running a default settings.
I'm running Win XP pro on a

Does it freeze on both DirectX and OpenGL programs?

I would check if there are new drivers for your Motherboard. You may also want to check for a BIOS update.

Try using a different but similar card. If it still happens then you know it's not the video card. If it doesn't happen then it's the video card. It's a place to start.

Yes, I've tried Counter Strike/ Half Life in both DirectX and OpenGL. I thought it might be just that game but I ran Giants and it would also freeze. I'm installing the newest bios right after this post, I hope it helps but the last 2 didn't and I'm not holding my breath.

MacaroneePenguin, I tried a creative labs TNT2 ultra and it did the same thing, I've installed specific drives from the card maker, and the general drivers straight from Nvidia. I using Den Drivers 28.32 right now. 2D/ regular work and the computer is fine, but with 3D if craps out.

What size power supply do you have?

It does sound like a driver/software problem. do a google groups search on the asus usenet newsgroup and see if there are others having the same problem.

I upgraded from a sparkle 300watt to an Antec 400watt PS. The bios upgrade didn't help either.

Just a wild guess, but are you playing multiplayer games??

The reason I ask, is your SCSI card and network card may not like sharing interrupts...

Just a thought in the dark.
