3d games freeze

When I play 3d games, my computer freezes. The games that I am talking about are: MOHAA, UT, and even Starcraft. When I start UT the frame rates look slower than they should be. I hit escape to bypass the movie and when I try to do anything such as changing the preferences, the video freezes and the only way that I can get out of this is to manually reset my computer. This freezing also happens when I use OpenGL in UT. In MOHAA, it freezes when I try to go into a game - it freezes while it is loading. They all worked fine before I used Win2k's recovery option. I had to use it because I got some INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE BSOD when I loaded into Win2k. Anywayz, to get back onto the subject, I would like to know what I can do to try to fix this because this only happens in 3d appz. My computer runs fine when word processing/surfing the net. Thanks in advance for your help, btw I dont think a reformat would be 2 much of an inconvinence, but I would like to avoid it.

System:
1ghz Duron
ECS K7S5A
OnBoard Sound
Maxtor 30gb HD
3d Prophet 4500 Driver 7.89 (I had the newest drivers installed, so I reverted back to the older ones, but to no avail)
Win2k SP2

I know nothing about your vid card, so just take this as a friendly
BUMP FOR THE NEW GUY!!!
Good luck, welcome aboard!

Since it was working before, i'd suggest a Full format and reinstall of your system as it seems that runing the recovery option somehow screwed up some vital files.

But another alternative (probably better to do this first before the above), is to reinstall DirectX8.1, and your video card drivers (you did this already is seems) and maybe even Win2k SP2.. otherwise, a full format is required. But if it stills stuffs up after that, it might be a hardware problem..

Thank you for your response Jeremiah.
How would I go about reinstalling direct x 8.1 since I installed it using Windows update?? As to your idea about a hardware problem, I dont think that would be it since it was working fine b4 the recovery, but I could be wrong - hardware does go bad.

Before you restore the system try taking all the PCI cards out of the system. Disable your onboard sound. Run the demo again and see if the lockups magically disappear.

Lockups are very commonly caused by NICs, sound cards, etc, that don't play nice with your vid card.

Make sure you have the latest BIOS and chipset drivers for your system and don't overclock anything.

Could be software problem or like the guys said hardware conflict, did you disable all video shadowing in bios? Disable system bios cacheable as well,

get all the latest driver updates for that SiS 735 board from here .

DirectX 8.1 link .

As for your INACCESSIBLE _BOOT problem look through these ,they might help.

Minimal install of hardware is a good idea like gunf1ghter said, this might help find the problem if it`s a hardware conflict with another PCI device.

gunf1ghter- I already used the system restore with my onboard sound enabled and my modem in its pci slot. I think I may have hardware conflicts though (I will get to that later)

BFG- I think I have the bios from 12/25/2001, so I might try flashing to the newest bios. I am not overclocking nething.

Mem- I dont know where the video shadowing is, the K7S5A doesnt really have the most elaborate bios. I will also disable the system bios cacheable.

Regarding the hardware conflict I spoke of earlier: I have 5 other devices sharing IRQ 11 with my AGP Kyro II. I have no card in PCI slot 1. I have my modem in slot 5. The devices on IRQ 11 are:

3d Prophet 4500
SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open host controller
sis 7001 pci to usb open host controller(that isnt a typo, it is in there twice)
sis 7012 audio driver
sis 900 pci fast ethernet adapter
msp5900-u modem

BTW, It wouldnt be much of an inconvinence to format because I have all weekend to reload my software.
Is there any way that I can change the IRQs in Win2k under ACPI mode?

capncrunch, the reason that you see so many devices using IRQ 11 is that your system is loaded with Windows ACPI which does IRQ steering. In reality those IRQ's are not all being used by your devices, but they are all "tied together" by IRQ11 which allows windows to more efficiently manage them.

CapnCrunch the video shadowing is normally in the "Advanced bios features " section ,the system bios cacheable is normally in the "Advanced chipsets features" section.
You could try running in 2x AGP mode(set in bios) see if that helps at all.

Thanx for clearing up my irq question. I have decided to do a reformat b/c I think my computer has a virus. The only times my computer freezes when I am not playing a 3d game is when i run adaware or NAV2002. Thank you to everyone who tried to solve my problem

if the IRQ doesn't solve it, make sure you're not overheating. There is a fan on the KYRO but, maybe the system is a little bit too hot after an hour or so solid gaming, i had this on Voodoo3, if i left UT on for two hours, it was a V3 2000 but overclocked to V3 3500 speeds. also a system might be failing after a few minutes of turning on, same problem occurred to me - couldn't work it out until i realised my PC was quiet as a mouse...
