The firing pin is a metal nail, and I can't imagine the chamber or barrel lasting long under the pressure.

exactly what i have been saying all along. no matter how invasive technology gets, you will always be able to sneak WMD's through.

until the airlines start fisting everyone in the ass i dont see any other way to be safe. and if people dont like that, we can just live in jail. america is the capital for jail living anyway, were so good at it and prisoners are very safe compared to the public.

there is one metal piece in the gun.

3d printers are dumb.

Spend $3000 on a machine that makes plastic crap you could otherwise buy from China.

Any 3d printed gun is going to be a piece of crap useless to anyone. Everything that is useful and made of plastic is already sold in stores, so its a useless tech.

Right, cause rapid prototyping sucks. So does 3d printing bone replacement. Or printing a replacement part that is no longer made or only sold as part of a much larger assembly. Plenty of legit uses for a 3d printer. However its not tech that needs to be in every home.

Yeah, I'm beginning to think 3d printers are being overblown. Not much of my budget is spent on crap that a 3d printer can make. It definitely is a great tool for many specialized purposes, but I agree that they won't be in every home. Not until the truly sci fi tech of molecular replicators.

Anyway, this defense distributed guy seems like a nutbar: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DconsfGsXyA I don't understand how they make money, unless they get a ton of donations from gun hobbyists.

3D printing will eventually become cheaper, faster, and ultimately more widely available. Interesting to see what the next 10 years, or less, will bring.

Conspiracy! This inexpensive printed gun is just like when Reagan invented crack to kill off the black man!

I've been printing these things out for half a day now. Gonna dump copies all over LA and then set my DVR to record.

I blame Intel because they made the CPU in my desktop that allowed me access to the information... and ATOT because you all have driven me to it.

theyre using the most basic polymers they have, just to prove the concept. in the decades to come, you might be blown away at the stuff we can make because the materials being used will get exponentially better. who knows, someday maybe we make a 3d-atom printer that prints molecules at a time, allowing you to make virtually anything without any defects.

You want to kill 3-D printed guns?

A. Make illegal to make or possess such a weapon
B. Fill cyberspace with faulty plans that are designed such that the gun is destroyed when fired & cannot create enough pressure to propel the bullet forward with lethal speed. If the shooter is injured by gun fragments, so be it.

A few idiots make the fake guns & get injured, and a few publicized articles, and problem goes away. Any counter-measures to detect such guns - blogs about what to look for, etc. - easily defeated by doing the same.

This. This strategy worked great for stopping movie piracy so it should work for stopping 3D printed guns as well.

Yes, a star trek replicator would fundamentally change society and be a requirement for middle class living. That is decades away, if it ever even gets invented.

Even higher strength materials aren't going to make a 3d printer a household necessity. There just aren't enough items that an average family could make with a home based system to make the investment worthwhile. There are only so many plastic toys and wrenches you can make for yourself. The real story is in how entrepreneurs will use 3d printing. The tech will, in the relatively near term, reduce the cost of doing business for a lot of small businesses in varied industries.

In the home, it will remain a novelty/hobby until you can make food, clothing, and personal electronics with one, i.e. when molecular replicators are invented.

Sure. But I see them more or less like photo printers are now. Most people will be better served by using a service when they need to print something. This can be local or a delivery service. Some professionals will really benefit from having a high end machine at home, and there will still be a few who stubbornly insist on using a low end machine for useless junk. (Yes I know people still print text, I'm taking about photos you want to last)
