3D TVs terrible

Every 3D TV I've looked at has the same issue - the glasses cut way too much light. It's dark.

I understand the design that they're cutting half the light to alternate images left to right, and this design might make the light loss inevitable.

But it ruins the image for my taste. The dark picture is much worse than the benefit of 3D.

Is there any technology coming that doesn't look dark?

There is at least one set out that uses the same polarizing glassed used in movie theaters. Toshiba released a "no-glasses" set in Japan but its expensive and small.

There's some tv's that turn the brightness up since this happens pretty much on all sets. It even happens on glasses free 3D.

My Sony automatically goes to full brightness in 3d mode. Just like it automatically dims and runs at 24fps in cinema mode.

you want passive glasses. LG makes a 2011 model with this technology. not active shutter. it will make your children cross eyes and give you seizures (i'm not joking).

LG LCD 2011 has a passive shutter design glass like the movies

3D is going to need a few years to be perfected. Perhaps by then, all the other display issues can be solved as well and people will be able to be buy sets that just plain are perfect, rather than having x numbers of issues.

Probably less than some of the right-wing P&N posters give people.

What percent of the population is affected, is there a safe test for this?

Does this eliminate the dark issue, how good is the 3D?

Thanks for the replies.

Right wing P&N posters?

You shouldn't even be buying a TV following your idealogy, correct? You should be giving your money to people less wealthy than you, so they can buy things. Only when they are equal to you - or rather, when you've reduced your money level to their money level - could you think about buying a nice TV.

You're starting to sound Republican Craig about buying a nice TV for yourself...that's not very Progressive!

you lose brightness and half resolution with the polarizing LCD from LG 2011.

basically half the resolution (left/right or up/down) is polarized with a filter on the LCD (no plasma!) so you can use passive shutter polarized glasses.

so you lose half-resolution but honestly most people can deal with 1920x540 since broadcast tv is 1920x540 (1080i=540p imo). so no biggie especially with fast paced shows.

the bad part is you need to crank up the brightness way high because the tech still darkens. but that isn't a problem in a dark room. most of us don't sit around watching 3D in the day lol.

It's getting there. If they can marry this new LG tech to Plasma i think we'll have the brightness solved. the half resolution - honestly most people couldn't tell 1920x540p in a well lit fast action movie.

gaming in 3dvision might be another matter. TIME for 4K tv's
