3dfx Glide Question

Video cards are not my area of expertise( but, then, what is, heh heh). Anyway, a friend of mine has a kid who already has a couple of games that requires a Voodoo 3 video card, I think because the game requires " Direct3d, OpenGL, and 3dfx Glide", which, the Voodoo 3 has. He wants me to help him configure a low priced computer system for his boy for Christmas. Question: Will any of the new video cards, ( with names like Geoforce, Nvidia TNT, Kyro Hercules 4500, etc) or, even just a 2d/3d video accelerator agp 32mb video card, play games that require "Direct 3d, OpenGL, and 3dfx Glide" ?

I think you need to change the "and" to "or", as in it can use " Direct3d, OpenGL, OR 3dfx Glide" so yes all of new cards will play those games, but none would be able to use the glide API, as its only supported on 3dfx/voodoo cards(except for some pretty lousy wrappers)

I think the kid is mistaken about requiring "Glide" as I can't remember any games off the top of my head that were glide only(could be wrong) but certainly there are some older games that would likely run better with glide on an older/slower system.

Actually there are some older games that can only use Glide or Software mode, e.g. NFS2SE, Spec Ops. If there are a few games that he has that need Glide you could just buy a Geforce 2 as the main card and then an old Voodoo 2 for playing Glide games, thats how I have one of my systems set up at home.

No new game requires glide. That probably has something to do with 3dfx being dead for a year A few old games require glide...and if he happens to stumble across one of them, a glide wrapper should suffice.

Hmmm, "a glide wrapper" . I'm assuming you mean to attach a Voodoo card, as an accessory to the main video card?

Probably a better way to ask, if a game says it requires "3dfx Glide" to play it..............will today's current 2d/3d accelerator cards do that?

nope unless you can get a glide wrapper
BTW ataching a voodoo2 card on a 2d card is not a glide wrapper a glide wrapper is a driver that emulated glide, and thus is alot slower.

why don't you just list the games you want to play, and perhaps you can get a good idea of what you'll need. I doubt there are games out there that haven't been played to death by the members.

Maybe he wants to play Grand Prix Legends, in which case he already appears to be a very wise young man. GPL was written with only Glide support (and Rendition) but since then a Direct3D patch has been written to allow non-3DFX users to enjoy this fine historical motor racing simulation.
Perhaps some other 3DFX games have received similar attention.
Like rbV5 said, if you are able to list the games he wants to play, perhaps someone here can advise a solution.

Thank you all for posting replys to my question. When I actually get my hands on those particuliar games and actually look at the system requirements, I will be able to come to some conclusions. So far, ( and, correct me if I'm wrong), IF he has a game, that requires, say, 3dfx glide, or, say, even mentions specifically a Voodoo 3 card, today's 2d/3d graphic accelerators should play them, WITH a "glide wrapper"?

Best idea, go out, get a low end 2d/3dd card that will play most games but not at fastest or nicest reso (Radeon LE,Radeon 32mb DDR, GeForce Ti, all come to mind) and then go pick up a V2 or a pair of V2's over at the FS/FT forum, (they're only about 20-30 dollars) and you'll have a system that'll run D3D, OpenGL and Glide!

I finally got the games and installed them on a computer with standard 2d/3d accelerator video, and, all of them ran fine, good graphics. They did not have the original boxes that came with each game, just the sleeve the game came in. Here is the list of games: 1)Oregon Trail 4 2) HotWeels Stunt Track Driver 3) Need for Speed High Stakes 4) Motocross Madness 5) Moto Racer . My guess, Gateway sold them a Voodoo 3 to play NFS High Stakes, but, again, it plays fine with decent graphics with today's standard graphic accelerator. Thank you all for your help and suggestions.

Im not 100% sure since I never bought into the voodoo mess but wasnt Turok a glide only game to the point that I think you had to have a voodoo card to play it?
