Was looking for a good deal on the V5, buy.com no long list 3dfx products, nor does Onvia. Also checked Egghead.com, Computers4Sure and a few other big name stores, none of them have 3dfx products in stock anymore.

I figured online stores will sell them until supplies deplete.

Not all B&M stores pulled them yet, I can still find 3dfx products in Fry's Electronics.

The local Walmart here still have some voodoo 3 and voodoo 5 left, but then the store still sells S3 Virge videocards for $99.

Why would you even consider buying a V5 now? Driver support will dissappear as well as warranty. I'm pretty damn sure Nvidia won't be supplying these services.

Driver support? Arent the drivers already good enough? I mean their performance has been tweaked to maxed out.

I don't get it. Don't they make V5's anymore? Both Diamond and Aureal went bankrupt, and you can easily buy a new Monster MX300! :frown:

...unless, of course, Nvidia demanded the discontinuation and surrender of all non-T&L products

As much as you feel is "MAXED" out, i can easily say that no driver is perfect. Any new game, Operating system, DirectX 9 or new motherboard may render those V5 drivers useless in the near future. Why do you think old products still get new drivers? 1 word. Compatibility.

The main purpose to have drivers is to make sure its operating properly. Although performance and stability is important, whats worst then to have "No Drivers" later on?

No Drivers = No future.

Just look at all the companies that shut their doors recently. Little or no driver support.

Whats your point? There is nothing else that I want at this point. The thing will serve me very well between now and next generation.

Well its best if you reconsider instead of dumping money in the toilet. Nvidia will be releasing their NV20 this coming April, your better off just waiting instead of buying something thats guaranteed to be a paper weight in one year.

I dont think its dumping money into the toilet. I cant anymore, if I tell myself to wait I can wait forever. I've been considering getting something to replace my crappy Velocity 100 for over 6 months now! There's gotta be an end. Voodoo5 is compatible with all the games I play(mainly glide games), and it's got good Win2k performance which is the OS I'll be running. Is there a better choice? I wont be upgrading my motherboard for at least quite a while, and did you say DX9? I dont even have DX8!

If you need something cheap and a well performer now, get a Geforce2 MX.
Going around $100 you can't go wrong getting one and you won't regret it! There will always be driver support for a long time to come(cna't see Nvidia closing their doors) and definately out live the V5.

Since Glide has been on a downhill slide since Nvidia dominated the market, its really not a concern. Direct3D is just as good as Glide at this day an age, and in some cases its superior.

From what I see, your a 3dfx lover. Its sad to see it go but buying a 3dfx product now would definately be a bad choice.

3dfx lover?? LOL... no Im not that, I love my games and I'd love whatever video card that fits my criterias for a reasonable price.

Yes Glide has gone downhill, but I still play Unreal based engine games, namely UT and Deus Ex. Other Glide optimized games like NFS:HS is also Glide optimized. Anybody knows Unreal + D3D = sucks. It has nothing to do with loving 3dfx, they just happen to be the card that offer the best performance for the price I can afford. 2D is also my priority, GF2 MX doesnt meet that requirement. The only possible option is Radeon 32MB but Win2K performance sucks.

As far as I know, 3dfx made all the drivers. What your talking about were the 3rd party sellers back in the day when 3dfx was a chip maker(before buying STB). 3rd party resellers modified the drivers to contain their own company logo and features, but were based on the original 3dfx driver. You can still see this wth Nvidia products ie; Creative, Guillemot etc.

Unreal tournament?? I beg to differ. I own a Nvidia card as well and play UT very often. I don't see a huge difference in 3d quality as opposed to Direct3D or Glide. Infact theres also a "texture" pack on the 2nd UT disc that can be used with current Geforce cards, but you need to "specially" enable them.

I don't get how a GF2 MX doesn't meet your 2D requirements.

I use to have a Guillemot Xentor32, the same card you had. I ran UT with that, it was pretty smooth at 800x600, that card burned out and I replaced it with 3dfx Velocity 100, an 8MB Voodoo3, and it ran the same resolution and the same graphic detail at a much faster speed. Glide didnt make much of a texturing difference to me in UT, but speed was a big plus, considering how well such a crappy video card ran compare to a TNT2 Ultra with 4 times the amount of RAM. My favorite game is NFS:HS, and I can tell you for certain that game like 3dfx cards better than nVidia cards.

<<I don't get how a GF2 MX doesn't meet your 2D requirements.>>

Its almost general knowledge these days that nVidia 2D is suck.

Please try not to persuade me any more, I have already made up my mind. If anything should happen its my loss.

Wicked 3D was a 3rd party company that came out with Voodoo 2 based cards. Apparently they "improved" the 3dfx drivers and produced the best 3dfx Voodoo2 graphic boards at that time.

As far as them supporting the whole Voodoo5 lineup, without at doubt, it won't happen.
