Dexion; Your the nvidia lover from what i'm seeing. You keep on trying to convince him even though he's decided. Also the voodoo5 is way better than the geforce 2 mx, to compare the two is laughable. The MX is crippled by the memory it has the reduced pipe. 3dfx will be making new drivers for several months, they still want to sell as many old products as possible. I have a Geforce2 GTS and it is great but I need a second vid card for my second monitor and I plan on getting a voodoo4 4500 pci.

Hey don't point fingers mate, I am not a Nvidia troll. If you look at my system rigs I dont own any new Nvidia cards(Geforce's etc).

I'm just suggesting him to move away from an obviously dying media, and its just not very smart to purchase something from a company thats closing their doors. I simply suggested viable other alternatives, although not as good, it will serve him probably longer lifespan than the V5 due to updated drivers(you don't realize how important they really are until their gone). The reason I suggested is that theres nothing worst than getting something you bought a year ago that just won't work even for your little sibling's computer when you do get something to replace it.

The only reason I suggested the Geforce2 MX is that its cheap and worth it for $100, and you simply can't go wrong with the quality. Although it may not match the V5, but it'll be enough to satisfy his gaming needs. No gamer really needs more than 1024x768@60FPs anything more is bragging rights and even the Geforce2 MX can do that for Q3A and pumping more than 50FPS@16bit for UT on a 1Ghz computer.

Note that there is visual problems with 3dfx's latest and probably last HSR drivers over 800x600 with HSR enabled.

<< At 1024x768x32 the HSR setting of 1 increases performance to a large extent but also produced rendering problems. As noted previously, the single * next to the Voodoo5 5500's score means that the gameplay produced see through surfaces at times, producing some image quality problems. Although the image quality suffered, the FPS rating increased by 8%. In the case of the Voodoo4 4500, gameplay was affected more adversely, with the game becoming somewhat jumpy and misrendered polygons popping up more often. The setting here resulted in a 30% speed increase but left gameplay very undesirable. >>

<< "DX9? Wtf? Like a GeForce will be DX9 compatible, whenever DX9 actually comes out... A couple years, at least? It's still gonna be a while until DX8 is fully utilized." >>

Hey, the last time I remember DX7 was brand new less than 8 months ago(correct me if I'm wrong), but new updates come faster than you expect.

My point is, that compatibility without drivers in the future will be problem.

I agree! 3dfx made a very good product, I can't deny that! I don't object at all to you buying a 3dfx product at this time of day, hey, its your money!

I just can't remind myself on the product I purchased 3 years ago, where I spent $199(thought it was a GREAT price compared to anything in its class) on the Syquest SparQ Removable 1G drive. It had all the best features, price and performance. Although quality isn't as good, it had the best solutions. A couple months after my purchase, the company shut its doors and no longer had any warranty or driver updates. Lets just say this thing is long gone.

I actually just bought a voodoo 5500 for $160 new after being dissapointed by wierd ass tearing with the radeon retail 64mb chip and wanting something else than my geforce ddr. I decided on the voodoo for glide and compatability right now but totolly plan on getting a nv20 when they come out.

I also run my tbird at 1313mhz.

I may run into problems in the next few months but all recent games are going ok. For me it was compatability, not raw framerates. I still wanted to play some glide games and was finding the voodoo the overall winner while actually playing all my games, some old mostly new.

gcliv:

I always did like Glide. Alot better then glitchy OpenGL.

OpenGL is not glitchy. Badly written OpenGL drivers/programs are glitchy.

Who says UT in D3D = sucks? On a nVIDIA...I can believe it...everthing on nVIDIA = sucks IMO.

Image quality for UT in D3D on Radeon hangs right with the V5 in glide, possibly even better...but that's just the opinion of my friend (who owns and loves his V5) and I.

oh...and I think I can answer the question about Radeon performance in win2k as opposed to win9x...win2k is very stable and within 10% of win9x which I believe is as good as either nVIDIA or 3dfx can boast.

I agree with the Radeon 32 DDR guys. These things are going for about $120 on pricewatch now w/ free shipping, which is starting to approach the price of a GeForce 2 MX (price on these with shipp is running ~$100 for the cheapo's). I've still got a VooDoo2 card sitting in my system from Glide stuff (I got mine for $50 a while back, I'm sure they're still cheap , and I'm just going to get the Radeon for D3d and OpenGL.
