Well I'm just doing what is right for you. As much as you it might be worth the money, I'm sure a couple months down the road you'll know you wasted money. Thats something I do very often and I've come to know from experience. Unless V5s are going for at least 50% of the original price, I ain't touching them anymore(I owned a V5 a couple months ago, but sold it since I didn't really need that speed).

Thank you for your concern, I know this is a gamble, and I know my odds.

Does Win2K performance mirror Win9x's with the new drivers?

I am quite sadded by the disappearing of 3dfx and the Voodoo. I always did like Glide. Alot better then glitchy OpenGL. But life is life and I agree, Radeon seems to be a very good solution. But if u are just too in love with Voodoo still then thechipmerchant.com is still selling Voodoos. I think the 3500 and V4 and V5 are still there.

Thanks for the link.

Again I want to make it clear that Im not "in love" with 3dfx. V5 is just the card that suit my needs the best.

Yes, for a shortened period of time. Good luck.
btw. I picd up a V5 when before it was released way back in May, it was fun testing it out. I sold it a bit later after realizing that its not "that" good.

Dex the first one to get the V5 on this forum

on this whole unreal tournament issue-
my athlon 650 + voodoo2 (12mb) ran the game faster/better looking than my athlon 650 + geforce2 mx.

doesnt everquest support glide also? thats a pretty popular game.

I disagree with your choice, but it's your choice. Too bad 3dfx didn't quit some weeks later, maybe they'd have optimised their latest drivers a bit more.
Remember, software side HSR was supported (AT had a large review about it), but unfortunately it proved to be too buggy. Still, it seemed to be a very interesting option had the bugs been ironed out. Anyway, I guess that won't happen now, Nvidia sure won't optimise them and I doubt they're willing to open-source the drivers.

Buy the card from in the for sale forum LXi, you would find a bit cheaper in there and i just bought a v5 too from someone in there. I actually traded my Geforce 2 GTS PRO for a v5. I can tell you one thing i aint this card up till hell freezes over. It does exactly what i want it to do and that it is play UT smoothly and crisp. D3D blows goats for UT.

Im looking at a deal from Comp-U-Plus, $176 with $14 shipping. Too bad Onvia pulled them, or else I can get a nice $172 deal shipped(possibly with a coupon as well). But is anyone selling his V5?

Well if you really want it that badly, I'm sure people will be trying to sell these things later on. Just wait and snatch one up for cheap, cause current online stores will definately still charge you full despite knowing htat 3dfx shut its doors. Forget the shrinkwrap and the warranty(neither is important anymore), as long as it works.

Hey all, happy new year

about 3dfx products - at my country (Latvia) at this tim the only available 3dfx is V4500 PCI

i` m loking for V4500 AGP (V5 too expensive for me) but the companys say that they will be shiped after 2 or 3 weeks

and whats the deal with Nvidia & 3dfx ????
I know only one thing about NVIDA TNT series - drivers for those cards still sucks a lot
about GeForce doun`t know - i just don`t like the picture of games.

PS maybe i`m a 3dfx lover but I just like THE way my games ar running on thos cards

Quino was selling OEM cards for $165 shipped. I'm not sure if he still is. You can send him a PM and check it out.

State tax...uhhh

I don't mind the state tax that much. I really am a stickler on ridiculously-high shipping charges though like the S&H charges from the Arctic Cooler distributor.

Mwave in City of Industry is a good 25 min drive through So. Cal. on the way to work. And they do offer a Will Call option w/c is what I've always done on purchases from there. Though, I don't like their $5 "handling" fee that they tack onto Will Call orders.

<< Wicked 3D was a 3rd party company that came out with Voodoo 2 based cards. Apparently they "improved" the 3dfx drivers and produced the best 3dfx Voodoo2 graphic boards at that time. >>

I believe they also released Voodoo3 drivers as well since I've downloaded them. I have to agree with LXi though, the Voodoo cards were pretty fast in glide games compared to the same game in D3D. I'm not a "lover" of either Nvidia or 3DFX and I'm telling it like it is. I have a Celeron 450mhz machine with a Voodoo3 3000, and an AMD 1Ghz machine with a Geforce 2 GTS and the Voodoo3 runs Unreal Tourney faster in glide mode than my Geforce 2 in D3D. The Geforce's image quality does look better though, but it really doesn't matter when your running around shooting. Maybe I should start this next part in a new thread, but my Voodoo3 3000 just died yesterday!
The images are all messed up even in DOS mode. I just called them today to RMA it and they said they would be happy to... I wonder if they have any Voodoo3's in stock... I hope they don't and are forced to send me a Voodoo5.. hehehe... It's a good thing these cards have a lifetime warranty and it died now instead of a few months later when 3DFX permenantly closes their doors.

I will definitely get a voodoo card. I am hoping the prices drop more before stock runs out. I am not worried at all about driver support as I currently run a voodoo 1 4meg with drivers that are 2 years old. I still get up to 40fps in unreal tourney. I just keep updating my directx. The voodoo drivers stopped at dx 5, but it hasnt been a problem for me yet.

They are going to dissolve the company with shareholder approval. If shareholders don't approve, they'll just go bankrupt. 3dfx is dead. They don't even own the trademark to their own name anymore.

Funny... even though "3dfx is dead", my V5 still works great.

To suggest LXi purchase a NV20 instead makes no sense, since there'll be like a $400 price difference.

DX9? Wtf? Like a GeForce will be DX9 compatible, whenever DX9 actually comes out... A couple years, at least? It's still gonna be a while until DX8 is fully utilized.

MX? The V5 smokes the MX in just about every conceivable circumstance.

Driver support. Yeah, there probably won't be any new drivers. There is a current WickedGL driver for the V5. Will they make more? Probably not, but who knows?

Current 3dfx drivers are excellent. It's pretty rare that a driver is updated to support an incompatible game. An API like DX, yeah. But not a game. So, I personally am not worried about future game compatibility, until T&L becomes a reality. But haven't we been promised "X" number of games for LAST Christmas? And now there's just a few... none of which I can't run just fine on my V5.

I know you guys don't see it. But 3dfx does offer a lot in their product that other companies do not. LXi sees it, and it's really ok if he wants a V5. You don't need to talk him out of it.
