really hope futuremark can do something to disable whatever optimization that Both Nvidia and ATi can do.

Ati doesn't do anything like that

Well they don't, they did it for 3dmark2001 but then they stoped doing that and they now have a policy not to do it for any synthetic benchmarks.

Saying they don't do "anything like that" connotates that ATi doesn't optimize. They most certainly do. Do they do app detection? Not that anyone has been able to discern yet, but in my mind that doesn't make them any less guilty than Nvidia. Saying "well, the optimize in different ways..." is like saying "well, he used a steaknife for the murder instead of a lead pipe...."

The point is, they both "optimize", and frankly I'm not happy about that regardless of which camp we're talking about. Let the APIs optimize for your chips, and let the developers optimize for APIs. It works better that way.

and whats wrong with optimizing?
isnt that what the driver writers are supposed to do?
even if it is for a specific game/app?

Sure they optimize; but I was speaking of application specific optimizations as that is what is relevent to the topic and which ati has not been doing for quite some time. Now they are starting it up again with their "AI" option, but they already made it clear that it would not be used for benchmark applications.

Maybe the important question about 3dmark05 is will reputable sites even use it? Seems to be a strong movement to use only games for benchmarking.

Optimising is good. Optimising in my sense of the word being improvement in performance without image degradation. Of course, everyone can see the picture differently and may not notice any degradation compared to someone who feels as though the Mona Lisa had a moustasche drawn on in black marker.

I dont think this is easy.

Optimisation is good in that people can make their cards faster yet as both companies constantly improve their drivers, a consumer may not know when to jump in.

Doom3 runs better on Nvidia cards.... what would have happened if a few days before it was released, AIT's new driver package increased its performance to equal or best Nvidia? I know the difference is signifigant in this case but if it all came down to a few fps and a few marks on Futuremarks, it makes it difficult to see what is best for you. Even if you think you chose correctly, theres still the 'what if i got the other one?'

I dont care much for 3DMark aside from stress testing and eye candy. I care about real world performance but sometimes people will be sold on Futuremark performance so Nvidia and ATI duke it out there. Perhaps we should get Futuremark to stop these fights and let the 2 giants do more specifically for the gamers and those who do things with graphics beyond the playing rather than the people wanting the highest 3Dmark scores.

If I was a moderator, I'd ban everyone and anyone from using any future mark program
