Well, I've heard some criticisms of the Instant Messaging capabilities of the iPhone... what about using something like Meebo, or the web based GTalk?
It won't change the fact that you can't get IMs when the program is not open. As it stands AIM is a bit buggy, but the lack of IM capabilities when it's closed is the killer.

So when you lock the phone all apps get closed?

Not when you lock the phone but when you hit the home button to do other things like browse the web. Pretty crappy if you ask me.

That was my biggest complaint for the brief time I had the phone. I wanted to listen to Pandora, & surf, but I couldn't.

AIM crashes constantly on my iPhone, so if I need to chat while I'm away from a computer, then I just use meebo.

Hopefully someone will come out with an IM client that can stay active in the background for jailbroken phones, but AFAIK Apollo is dead and the MobileChat guys went for the App Store.

What about that whole September "app push" thing? With the persistent connection? Shouldn't that fix all of this?

In theory, Apple hasn't completely disclosed how it will work, nor what it will cost to use it.

They're going to CHARGE to use it?

You're kidding. Like, you've got to be kidding.

Ugh. This makes me glad I haven't bought one yet. Bring on Android!

I'm really glad that I've waited. I'm going to hold out until Christmas, and see what Android and Symbian have up their sleeves. I really wanted the iPhone, but I've lived this long without it, so I can wait another 5 months.

Random question, if I dont get a data plan with the iPhone, does it still have built in wifi to surf the internet(like the ipod touch)?

Yes, wifi has nothing to do with the data over edge or 3G. You realize you will be paying the full price to get the phone, right?

If you get a plan with only airtime you have to pay full price? Not that it matters, work is paying for the phone.

Yes, you won't get the sub price without a data plan.

Up here in Canada we still get the subsidized price without a combo voice/data plan. If our voice plan is over $30 it's $199/$299, but it's $50 more for those with voice plans that are $30 and less.

My voice plan is exactly $30, which means I paid $349 for my white iPhone 16 GB. Ordered mine over the phone on July 11 from Fido, and received it Monday, July 14. I've been enjoying it ever since.

I had data for a week and then cancelled it. However, I really miss the data so I think I'll reactivate it. It's $30 a month for 6 GB.

Oh and if you don't have any Firewall and router incompatibility issues, the iPhone's Remote application is totally awesome.

Three weeks later, there are still lines outside the Apple store for these damned things!

I had to wait an hour to get mine activated. Yes, I finally caved in!

By the way... I'm still not a fan of these on screen keyboards!

The keyboard has been a problem for me also. A buddy at work says you just have to get use to it. He has the 1st gen, and claims he hated too at first, but now he loves it. Watching him type with his thumbs is amazing.

This is my second 3G iPhone, and 3G is almost as bad as it was with the first one. Some days I have 5 bars, and sometimes I have none. This phone switches to edge though, where I get 5 bars. I don't get it, but hopefully 2.1 will fix it. Now that I can tether, I really don't want to have to give it up.

Yeah... it took me a good 10 minutes to make that last post on the phone. I kept fat fingering the URL, and entering the text was almost as bad. The mobile sites work a hell of a lot better, but using the iPod while surfing the web totally kills the battery in just a couple hours. What confuses me is that the phone says that I have 3G coverage in my area, though, even though I'm 15 miles away according to the 3G coverage map.

This design really has some potential, though... iPhone 3.0 will totally kick ass. That said, I'm not recommending it to my parents, or anyone else afraid of new technology.

Unstickied, the info is still useful but as this thread has died off it can easily be found by searching.

Where is the source that says it's $599 without a contract? I can't find any way _AT_ALL_ to get an iPhone 3G without a contract...

I noticed that my phone has been wandering from 3G, to EDGE, to GPRS (the black dot) data service all day in the same location... is this a common occurance, or is AT&T's service acting freaky?

I think it's your phone. Mines does pretty much the same thing at times (never has it gone to gprs). Do you know someone who has a different 3G phone? That way you can test & see it's not the network.

I don't have a source handy, but I remember seeing this mentioned a few times around launch. They explicitly mentioned that contract-free phones wouldn't be available until later though (never heard a specific timeframe).
