that's a huge releif that the restore fixes all those problems. There is a post over on the mac rumors front page about apps crashing- if restoring doesn't work then deleting the apps and resyncing should work. They think the problems have something to do with drm in the new apps.

I mean, the iPhone is really, REALLY tempting. If I could get 450 minutes, data, unlimited text and insurance for $65 a month I would go for it. As is, that would run me $90/mo before taxes and insurance, if it's even possible to get that on AT&T.

I have 700min, unlimited mobile to mobile, unlimited nights and weekends. 200 text a month and unlimited data. All for 69.95 a month. Oh and I got rollover. There is NO INSURANCE on iPhones.

Yeah, but you're going to have to tack on a extra $20/mo to get unlimited text messaging. I do about 2k a month via helodesk tickets and AIM forwarding. You're on the old iPhone plan right?

I agree with the OP, basically got all the points. As for the feel of it, this new one doesn't feel like it's going to slip out of your hands like the first gen, although now smudges are easier to see on the back.

I'd say that if you have a first gen and don't have a big need for GPS, I wouldn't bother yet. 3G isn't very good yet and so that doesn't help much yet. Personally, I'm not sure I should have sold my first gen and upgraded because of the increased data plan and lack of included text messages.

One of the best improvements was the normal audio port, we don't need a recessed connection adapter anymore.

This is why I don't feel the need to upgrade (until I walk into an Apple store and see it...I swear Apple pump something into the air to kill all rationality!)

I live in the greater Boston area, so full 3G coverage, and GPS/LBS would be awesome when I'm out with friends or trying to find a new bar/restaurant, however I don't know if its +$7/month+tax good (taking into account my FAN discount on voice only). Everything up here is so expensive anyway, I'd like to keep recurring bills as low as possible...plus I'm 90% going to sign up for MobileMe after my free trial if they can get the push parts working properly, so thats another $100/year.

In september there will be no need for AIM forwarding as the application push servers will work. So you should receive IMs even if you are not in the application. (AIM Application)

If you use text messages, factor that in as well.

As for MobileMe, I'm personally going to avoid it... the push feature is nice, but is it that much better than just having your phone check every half hour automatically?

Basically, I see MobileMe as a $7-8/month expense, and I hate recurring payments as well.

So far I love this phone! I'm noticing some slowdowns in the menus too and would like to try a restore. I just spent hours getting my contact list and apps arrarged just right tho. Is there any way to save that work?

the wife and I were able to snag a black 16gb each this morning from a AT&T store. We're standing in line now at the local apple store trying to get a white one for my brother-in-law.

I should note that both of ours do not look yellowish at all IMO.

So the restore seemed to clear everything up, but im still getting a 'sticky' contact list. Only seems to happen when I first go into the app, but its kinda annoying. Hmmm

I don't really text that much (less than the 200 package I have now) so I'm not overly concerned.

The reason I like MobileMe is because right now I'm keeping 3 separate calendars...Work (Lotus Notes based), gCal, and iCal/iPhone. MobileMe will allow me to combine the gCal and iCal ones and have them be completely in sync, and I'd wean myself off of gCal. To me, thats worth $8/month, if it works as advertised.

so I'm sitting here on the plane at the Tampa Airport and they have 3g up here. Wow, so much freaking faster it's not even funny. Hope they turn it on soon back home.

I thought AT&T was basically finished with their 3G rollout and was going to start concentrating on LTE so they wouldn't be so behind again.

I'm pondering switching. There's no 3G for AT&T in my town, but there is for Sprint/Verizon/Alltel... If I went with the 200 messages, which probably isn't enough, it would be $14 over my Sprint plan if I include my 20% FAN. I wish AT&T had something between 200 for $5 and 1500 for $15. I'll probably have to go with the $20 unlimited for a few months...

Still thinking...

I have to agree on the 3g. We have it in minneapolis and I was pretty surprised at how speedy it was. Funny thing is, everybody says the states is slow compared to Europe. I can wait until ATT pulls the lead out!

hows the battery life on 3G? I don't use WiFi so I'm used to the EDGE speeds and getting 3-4 days battery life (with my sporadic voice usage). Do you find the battery to drop fast even while the phone is in standby?

I don't think the battery life is that bad but I have had mine docked a lot since I got it so I can sync. I've been out for some long stretches though and the battery has barely moved off full. I have to go to work tonight so that'll be a good test. I'll let you know.

I've been reading that it's about 4.5 hours. If so, that's terrible. I LOVE my all-day battery life on my iPhone. Hmm, although I haven't really used my first-gen 4.5 hours straight...haha.

All I can say is the RF in the iphone is horrible. 1 to 2 bars max for 3G no matter where I am (ATT shows my area as dense 3G coverage).

There's a minority (seemingly) of people getting good 3G, but it seems like the majority are in my situation. There's huge threads regarding this problem on the everythingicafe, and howardforums.

Here's an article about it - Text

You live in the Boston area too right? It looks like excellent coverage using AT&T maps.

I'm glad I waited...I'll probably wait another week or 2 for things to shake out, then make my final decision.

I am wondering the same thing. I would like to be able to use my old phone when visiting certain places that do not allow cameras.

Take a paperclip and punch in the little hole in the top of the phone. The 3G comes with a SIM card remover you can use.
