I know this isnt video card related but since there is no section dedicated for displays I'd like to ask your opinion guys.

I recently got a bonus and I want to finally upgrade my 1080p, I'm thinking either a big single U3011 or three U2311 in portrait, what do you guys think? Is eyefinity just a phase? Is it going to disappear in a few years? should I just go with a single U3011.

I'll be swapping my 6850s for two 6950s will that cut it?

Once monitors which are practically bezel-less come out, eyefinity will be a compelling option, but the lines in the middle of the display just ruin it for me.

meh, depends on your usage. I personally like it for desktop work. I can define tasks to monitors and keep them "separated" so to speak. change to gaming.. yeah, bezel-less would be nice.

to the OP, what do you mean is eyefinity a phase? I would kill to have a 3 monitor setup... I just don't have the room for it. And not having to rely on two video cards to do it is great.

If you mean in relation to gaming... I dunno, I think it's just a niche market. how many PC gamers out there really use multi-monitor setups for the full game? That's a serious question, everyone I know sticks to one monitor... but they are mostly split PC/Console gamers.

And your thread title says 3x u2711, but your post says 3x u2311... 3x27" > 1x30" > 3x23" for me... but this is really personal preference

I would lean away from most 16x9 displays if you're going all portrait mode, as they just don't have the width and the bezels seem like they'd be more of an interference than if you went landscape.

Honestly I'd recommend (especially if you do any non-gaming tasks) you get the U3011 which will be fantastic for games and productivity both, then later on pick up a pair of 2007fp's for cheap and run them on the sides in a PLP (Portrait-Landscape-Portrait) as their vertical resolution and height match up with the U3011's horizontal.

Two 6950s will cut it no matter what setup you end up choosing, especially if you overclock them.

Having tried both I prefer the 30”. That said I would take three 30" eyefinity over my one 30", but I'll take one 30" over three small monitors. I think it's a very subjective setup and you need to try them for yourself to know for sure.

2x6950 will be more than enough and is the best price to performance setup going for high resolution and high settings gaming.

I should have added in my comments that the bezels only get in the way for gaming. For productivity, I would prefer the 3 displays. I already have two, and would be able to make use of a 3rd one occasionally.

I'm not worried about the bezels, I will ignore them eventually. And I don't see any bezel less monitors coming out any time soon.
I should have mentioned that the rig will be used mainly for gaming, that being said, will I enjoy a big 30' display more than eyefinity? Is it really just a gimmick?
Buying a 27' or 30' now and adding two small 20' in portrait does sounds interesting..

This is the right forum  Video Cards and Graphics (the graphics means monitors, LCD's and so on).

I'm a dual-screen user myself, so if the choice was one screen versus three then I'd go for the three.

I think it depends on your use. You said 'mainly for gaming' and personally, I can't stand the bezels. If I were in your shoes I'd get the best 30" monitor I could afford.

I would probably get the single 30.... Seems like it would be more useful across the board. You can hang another display up there for email and chat while you game or watch movies on the 30.

I was in the same boat. I had three 22" Samsung's and I sold them
and got one U3011. I do have a 24" Samsung as a side monitor but
I only game on the 30" Dell. I'm definitely loving the extra real estate
and my tri-fire setup is running BFBC2 mostly maxed out.

30" for sure. 23" are small nowadays, and you wont find images, objects any bigger on screen with 3 in eyefinity, just a wider periphery. On a 30" they will be bigger and more engrossing imo. And you can add another unit or 2 down the road.

30' it is then, I'm hesitating because I never sat in front of 2560X1600 and I have no idea what to expect.

when you go to the larger monitor, at first, expect to be shocked at how big it is and how great it is and to have good dpi still. Then after a couple days, you will adjust and forget how you ever put up with something smaller.
